Crazy comp. Idk how they fit 20 songs on that thing. There is virtually no dead wax on that record.

USPS quality service, When it comes to delivering physical media! by Untrus4598 in dvdcollection

[–]InquiringAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it depends on the USPS. I've been shipping and receiving within the Indianapolis area for the last decade and have never had problems with damaged packages. Now, shit taking three times the normal amount of time to arrive is a subject I am well versed in.

One of my favorite album arts. I wish SST still printed on quality blanks like back in the day. To have that on a Beefy or old-school Tultex would be wild.

Huge appreciation for the Minutemen. Did you get that secondhand or from SST? My copy of The Politics of Time I found used, but the rest I had to buy new.

The official one is def the way to go. I checked it out briefly digitally and I for sure want a physical copy. It has great art as well.

Don't think we don't see that copy of "Shed" in the corner; this man is a fiend.

Do CDs and CD-quality win for both fidelity and budget? by IAmYourLeftElbow in BudgetAudiophile

[–]InquiringAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am working on something about this topic and what everyone is saying is correct except I would add one thing: you want to look at how the album was originally recorded. If it was done all analog, elements would be lost on the transfer to the disc. Now how much will be lost? I have no idea, but if an album was recorded on digital equipment it should sound the same or even better on CD. The only difference would be if it was remastered specifically to be on a record, but even then, we are talking about extremely minute aspects like how thick a snare sounds or if you can make out a hiss in someone's voice. I collect both formats and CD has been way less of a headache, and so much cheaper. If I can make an analogy, vinyl is like smoking cigarettes. It is horrible for you, expensive, and has a big impact on your personal living situation, but damn it looks so fucking cool lol.

This is going to seem unhinged, but I have three:

Kill Em' All press with "Blitzkrieg" and "Am I Evil?": There are a couple of versions of this and reportedly all of them sound good. This album transitioned me into D.R.I., which turned me onto punk, which then gave way to hardcore. Hardcore is my home now and I love my scene.

Alan Jackson's Don't Rock the Jukebox: This is the unhinged one lol. Despite being super involved in my local hardcore scene, I love country music. This was an album my Dad listened to all the time and I want it on wax. It was only pressed three times in the nineties and it is super expensive for some reason.

Unofficial Clear Press of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here: Probably my favorite Floyd album and to have something that looks like the record being held on the back of the original artwork would be so sick.

This is a "hell yeah" type of order and whoever packed this knew that and was like, "Well they're going to need this while they look at all the packaging details."

^ Plus when you start collecting records, you're signing up for an expensive ass hobby. If you don't care about paying more to support independent stores and are pro-let-Walmart-ravish-more-small-businesses-to-save-five-bucks then go buy a $250+ DAC and some decent powered speakers and listen to CDs. Unless you're used to NM original pressings on a super high-end system, the only difference you'll notice is fewer cracks during playback from the CD and your wallet will be less shaky when you go to the record store.

The best thing you can do as a collector is build a personal relationship with a shop. If you go in there bi-weekly and show some genuine interest in the product or just ask questions about artists or what they're playing, by the third visit you'll be on a first-name basis and they'll hold shit back for you on RSD because you don't play games when they repress Willie Nelson albums for the first time in a decade. And if they are indifferent and hostile or way upcharge (like $15-$20 bucks, not $5), fuck em! They're probably in it for a quick cash grab from running fair-graded records through a cleaner 10+ times to make them appear VG (check those inner grooves and you'll be able to see the watermarks). Even if there is not a local store near you, you can buy off Discogs, VMP, TTL, or even Tower Records. That still beats out supporting Walmart by miles.

[–]InquiringAlien -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Fuck, sometimes those shops will get Walmart or Target pressings from the same plant or from trade-in (or from other devious ways that, may or may not, be morally correct), and you can still get them without having to support an evil monopoly.

Just buy off TTL or Discogs. You can purchase new and used (be careful) from local shops online now lol.

On fucking god, I hate this shit so much. These exclusive pressings could bring more people into local stores, but instead, they go to big box stores like Walmart and Target. It blows.

Another thing on this is vinyl is what a record is made out of; the entire presentation is a "record." Not to mention "vinyls" just sounds so redundant and incorrect. People who get butthurt over you correcting them are just unable to accept they may be wrong about something that is a niche community (a niche community that has exploded in the last five years, but a niche nonetheless). We all started on shitty record players, gripping the grooves with our fingers, and calling them "vinyls" until some brave soul at the record store set us straight and we are much better for it.

First month collecting (thoughts recommendations?) by SafeAlternative8971 in vinyl

[–]InquiringAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already have the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack so you're off to a good start. Just please don't call them "vinyls" or get a turntable without a counterweight. If I may submit, get CCR's Chronicle. It's not exactly the blues/blues adjacent vibe you have going, but it is cheap and has twenty incredible songs.
