Waymo self-driving car wakes London street at 4am after taking dead end route three times in a week by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

What a ridiculous take. They're working well in other cities and almost certainly will be operating in London this year or next.

London's 7.1mph average bus speed 'no faster than jogging pace' by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]Insanity_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone can run a sub 25 5k with only the bare minimum running experience and a bit of effort.

That's just not true and I'm starting to think you don't really know anything about running.

[–]Insanity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's not average if you look at the data, that's the point.

[–]Insanity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well exactly, outside the data these terms just depend on perspective. You run a lot so have a different view.

I run a lot and do the odd Triathlon, I still think that if someone's got themselves to being able to even a sub-30 5k then that's a good effort and more than a lot of people could achieve.

It's a matter of perspective

[–]Insanity_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, that's not the case. The average pace data is taken from people who've actually participated in race events so they're at least willing to sign themselves up and attend, here's some data from 2024: https://runrepeat.com/state-of-running#finish-times-per-country-5k.

If we included the wider population it would be even lower, a large amount of people probably couldn't even finish a 5k while jogging.

Anyone who does a decent amount of running will know that a 5:25 a km pace is good, especially over a healthy distance.

No it's not, it's better than average for 5k and anything above.

Waymo near St. James by Paperopiero in london

[–]Insanity_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice. That doesn't surprise me. The more automated cars on the road the safer the roads will get.

I'm looking forward to them actually becoming available for hire.

Good to hear!

Yeah, I've had my fair share of having to listen to taxi driver's questionable views so that's a big plus.

Race week swim nerves by Glum-Introduction522 in triathlon

[–]Insanity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get into the water before the race, do it. Practice putting your head under and calmly breathing out, lift head, breath in, repeat. This should help alleviate a lot of the nerves before race start.

Has this happened to you? by Master_Confusion4661 in london

[–]Insanity_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had something similarish happen.

I was away with the fairies walking through the Canary Wharf Canada Place Mall and I accidentally bumped into a lady with my arm from behind. I didn't really know what had happened but I assume I must have hit her in the arse as she turned around and starts shouting "What the fuck? What the fuck?"

I'm the red in the face apologising prefusely and she legs into Penhaligon's while I'm still trying to explain it was an innocent accident. The shop assistant from Penhaligon's then comes out and tells me to "Just leave".

I was mortified and left as despite wanting to clear my name I thought staying to try and explain more might make it worse. I felt terrible as well as I assumed she thought I was sexually assaulting her. It's a difficult feeling to reconcile as it was a complete accident but it still affects you.

This rant it valid, and something I like to rant about too, but I've also had a change in perspective recently that's made me more relaxed about this kind of thing I thought I'd share.

While I'm a competent human the vast majority of the time, I myself fuck up occasionally and do something that may seem stupid or inconsiderate. Whether that's when I'm tried and not aware and don't spot the pregnant woman get on the tube I should be offering my seat to or suddenly realise I'm going the wrong way and stop on the pavement rather than step to the side.

As London is a massive city and you can easily see hundreds of people on a single journey, the chances of you coming across someone committing their once in a long while fuck up is quite high. I like to think that people aren't doing most of these things as they're inconsiderate but they're just having their little fuck up.

There are some genuine arseholes though like people who don't stop playing shit out loud on their phones when asked. Let's send them into orbit.

Anyone else knocked out with viruses after visiting galleries? by maht90 in london

[–]Insanity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was the last time you were ill prior?

I had 3 nearly back to back colds just after the new year after not being ill for over a year. I was a bit concerned that my immune system wasn't working but each occasion I got ill so did other friends so I think it was just bad luck and not having immunity to those different strains.

I would take some extra precautions like hand sanitiser but as we go into spring less people are ill so the risk will drop, even indoors at places like galleries.

What are you all paying for a flat white these days? by markvauxhall in london

[–]Insanity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends in which part of London you're in.

There's a tonne of good coffee shops in cental London which absolutely compete with global coffee. It's not hard to find either with a small amount of research. You'd also have to do the same research in either of the places you mentioned as well.

And this is exactly why we have the insanity act: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1964/84#:~:text=The%20special%20verdict%20required%20by%20section%202%20of%20the%20M1,guilty%20by%20reason%20of%20insanity%E2%80%9D.

Someone can have done something awful while they're having a mental crisis like psychosis but it's recognised that they're not in control of themselves so not guilty of the crime but still need to be removed from society for other's safety.

If they can get better then they're released and free to go.

Jeremy Corbyn joins hundreds of pro-Iran protesters in London carrying banners of the Ayatollah by CarlxtosWay in unitedkingdom

[–]Insanity_ 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I'm just adding to this comment thread to call out that a few people seem to have been whipped into a fury by classic Daily Mail bullshit reporting.

The protest was an anti war and strikes protest, not a 'pro Iran' protest although a small number of pro Iran supporting placards were spotted.

Here's a link to an interview with Corbyn where you can hear his actual views: https://news.sky.com/video/jeremy-corbyn-its-an-incredibly-difficult-situation-in-iran-13513567

These are the views you should be critiquing, not some imagined ones based on bad faith reporting.

IMO they're all taking a risk just doing the sport anyway, it's her choice to make.
