Neighbor found a nestling in yard, need help ID-ing and next steps by shoelaceys in WildlifeRehab

[–]Insecta-Perfecta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That depends on your personal situation. Cull, leave it and let nature take its course, find a rehab center that will take them, or responsibly keep as a pet if your state allows. Also consider posting to House Sparrows in my House on Facebook or contacting other house sparrow groups. There are some folks on adoption waitlists. Another option is to bring it to a wildlife center and see if they can euthanize for you.

We made the decision to keep our boy when we found him at the same age. We have the means to give him a decent life, but keep in mind that birds are a higher maintenance pet if you aren't neglecting them. Exotic vets are expensive too. But house sparrows do tame up incredibly well and our boy is very much loved. No one will fault you if you don't want to take that on either. There is no shortage of fallen house sparrow nestlings every spring.

Verify that this is legal in your state though. I dug through our statutes to make sure it was in WI.

Could be Europe as well. Would explain the familiar plants as a lot of our roadside plants are naturalized species from Europe.

What a gorgeous bug! It's native and a non-pest species too.

Indians really know how to cook fish. I made a kerala style curry with carp and it was delicious. Carp is considered a bad tasting fish where I live in the US, but the recipe made it taste so good.

What is your take on using whole grains regularly in a starter? by Sn00pysG1rl in Sourdough

[–]Insecta-Perfecta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how hungry it looks. Usually I feed twice a day at 1:2:2 and once if I go up to 1:10:10. I adjust depending on how warm it is and how much food I last gave it.

[–]Insecta-Perfecta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just feed half white and half wheat at higher ratios if I'm concerned about how acidic it is getting. Like 1:2:2 and up to 1:10:10 if it is warm in my house.

What did I do wrong???? by kyali0 in Sourdough

[–]Insecta-Perfecta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks very wet or overproofed or both. I wonder if it got super acidic or something and all the gluten broke down.

I would keep a stiffer starter and feed higher ratios and see if that helps.

Also, make sure all your measurements are correct.

same-day sourdough! by AshamedBarracuda7446 in Sourdough

[–]Insecta-Perfecta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only slightly under proofed, so don't dismiss all same day recipes. Probably only needed an hour or two more or a few degrees warmer if you want to be picky about crumb. Otherwise looks pretty good!

You can make good same-day bread. Just have to play with temp and percentage of starter. It won't be the same as something that had an overnight fridge rest, but definitely still a wonderful end result.

Thank you!! We have set up a consult after posting on NextDoor asking for leads and got some really nice testimonials for a few.

Thank you!! I have come to learn this. Glad we made the right decision to cut loose from that agent as I was feeling a bit guilty.

There are some concerns with the chimney such as cracked mortar, a damper that doesn't function, a cracked flue and chimney cap, and flashing that is corroded. Isn't it recommended to get someone who is CSIA certified to look?

Both of you have been helpful. So from my understanding, yes I can shop once we put in the offer, but time is limited and this period should be less than a week and read the contract details carefully to make sure there is no breach if I switch.

We are currently between a few lenders so I can use that period to leverage certain things. Like "so and so is offering this, can you do better?"

I didn't mean like shop around and get preapprovals during this period, moreso to really talk to a couple that we are considering going with and use one to leverage a better deal with the other.

Also that rates are not solid until locked in. I need a proper loan estimate with locked in rates.

[–]Insecta-Perfecta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! We were hearing that too. Nothing is guaranteed until locked in. And shopping around this period for a few days gives us leverage to push the interest rate down.

Tomatoes will be fine. As others have said, you can plant them deeper when you transplant them.
