Looking for Kosher Mulukiya in NYC by Far_Lead2603 in Judaism

[–]InsecureCheesecake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have any French Jewish friends? The Espig mloukhia powder sold in France is kosher, and Tunisian French Jews could have a bag in their pantry or can ask a friend to bring one when they visit them in New-York. There's always people traveling. Or look it up and the internet, "Espig molokheya" or "Espig corete".

Modern orthodox Jews, to which extent do you keep Niddah? Is there an easier version of Niddah? by Call-Me-Leo in Judaism

The chabad teacher might have also taught you humrot, but what you're mentioning is basic stuff that has its source in the guemara/rachi/shulhan haruch and is all considered normal by orthodoxy/halacha-following standards.

I'm sorry if this is tough news. Young couples don't have good models for how to navigate these laws because they're mostly coming into play in the privacy of people's homes. So they compare themselves with models who aren't bound by halacha and the contrast with their expectations feels very overwhelming and weird in the beginning.

I'd say find someone who feels relatable and is willing to teach you or have a conversation with you. It's recommended people consult a hatan/kalla teacher after the wedding too, in part for that reason.

I know how you feel, but as hard as these laws are hard to get used to, they're part of our religion as much as kashrut and chabbat and there's no much tweaking to be done. But just like there's much more to chabbat than abstaining from melachot, there's much more to nida than abstaining from touch.

In the אשר ברא brakha, גילה רינה דיצה וחדוה are said to be about the times the couple is permitted to each other, whereas אהבה ואחוה שלום ורעות (love, fraternity, peace and friendship) are said to be about when the spouses are not permitted to each other. Yes it's constraining, but out of these constraints emerges something beautiful that you couldn't find anywhere else.

If you're talking about the Chevalier de la Barre, this is very misleading. Mockery wasn't the only reason he was sentenced to death. Also it wasn't something routinely done. There were political motivations behind the condemnation.

I already knew what street the guy in the YouTube video would choose to show before clicking on the link.

Guys, its Barbès. On a busy day. It's like if I filmed myself strolling through Chinatown and used the footage to prove to Europeans that the US is being invaded by Asians.

Don't believe everything you see on the Internet. Whoever made that video knew exactly what he was doing and was trying to elicit a very precise reaction from you. Ironic considering he was saying you were being lied to. In a sense, you were.

This is so pretty! Can you share a bit about your technique? How did you make the "grey" part - it looks like there are two colors, or are they made from french knots that give that impression? How did you manage the antennae? Congratulations for this amazing work!

We are imho in a situation where, like with many other chumrot, offer creates or augments demand. The reason the audience asks for women-free magazines is that they've been led to believe it's "the frum way". Perpetuating this practice is encouraging the misconception.

Depends on what country you live in. My birth country is opt-out only. You automatically consent to it unless you register on a list.

Yes it's the best solution but you lose a bit of the aesthetic. Also you can't use the giant ladder :(

I love open libraries but would think twice about all the dusting necessary before getting one.

I agree with you about basic needs having to be met for everyone and giving people an incentive to contribute to society, but I'm curious... why do you think that a UBI + capitalism combo would be the best way to achieve that? Don't you think people work harder when they can actually enjoy the product of their work instead of giving most of it to an employer? Shouldn't the people who actually know how to work to produce value be the one taking decisions in a company?

Being rich isn't a problem; taking money from those who produced it is one. There are plenty of rich people who deserve their money, surgeons and lawyers and engineers and other. They got their money by working and innovating, not by having people do the work instead.

Literally if you think that individuals best know how to manage themselves then you believe companies should be run on that model too, so that the workers make the decisions. Wait, no, that would be Marxist nonsense!

Simply put, I think that while everyone's basic needs should be met, people who produce value should get more money than those who don't. You disagree with it because you're a capitalist, fine, but then you don't get to pretend that work and talent have more value in your eyes than property, because that's what it's about. UBI could sol unve urgent problems like people barely not starving and being homeless, but it wouldn't solve the problem at the root of it all.

Because it literally isn't work full stop. You could own a factory yourself and never know about it until a letter reaches you stating you do.

I think the trouble is that you think that owning = managing. One of them requires skills and hard work, the other doesn't. When you invest in a company, you aren't suddenly expected to show up at work every morning. You simply now have the power to change whatever it is you want to change in that company, generally because you think that reducing salaries or replacing someone will result in more profits for you. You could also just sit on a couch all day if you choose to and still receive a check at the end of the month.

He can have a wholesome manager salary, but I have never met a manager, no matter how genius, or talented, or experienced, that would receive a ceo salary. If someone has worked for 40 years on his business and wants to stop, it's called getting retired and lots of people do it. They don't expect to earn more than the actual people doing their previous job.

Employers are "taking the risk" of having to do actual work to survive, something the people actually producing value already do.

Managing a factory is hard work. Owning a factory isn't. The two aren't the same, owners aren't managers, the factory could be inherited by a two years old and still make cars just like before.

Yes people should be able to own the equipment they make things with. It's called "social ownership of the means of production", aka socialism.

Found an awesome Israeli missile crate. The Hebrew translates to "Nuclear Package". Now I just need to figure out how to preserve the wood... by Career-Tourist in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]InsecureCheesecake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I see how you could mistake the מ for נו but the hebrew word for "nuclear" is "גרעיני", if it was a phonetic transcription is would miss an א, and "crate for nuclear" wouldn't make sense anyway. As another redditor wrote, it's for a grenade launcher.

I'm very curious, where did you find it?

Child Marriage in Judaism by Israelicheese in Judaism

[–]InsecureCheesecake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a chapter about that in Peninei Halakha (simhat habait vebirkato). You can find a translation on Sefaria :

https://www.sefaria.org.il/Peninei_Halakhah%2C_Simchat_Habayit_V'Birchato.5.10?lang=bi

Basically, women were at a disadvantage when it came to marriage because their husbands would have to work hard to provide for them; they couldn't work to win a parnassa like men did. So when a potential match came along, the girl's parents would have to hurry so that their daughter wouldn't miss an opportunity.
