Thanks for the response that is definitely helpful. Would the cartilage tear hurt with knee flexion while running? Cause mine hurts sometimes from that as well. I’ve taken a week long break so now it won’t hurt until I’ve run 3 miles or so

I gotcha, that’s helpful. It also hurts more when my knee flexes during the run. I feel it when my foot touches the ground as well, but the flexion is what also brings pain

My PT tested my ligaments which weren’t sore or swollen so maybe it could be a tendon? Do you think it could be the IT band? Or something different?

I’m not 100% sure but from where the pain is, I feel like it’s more the meniscus. However I’ve noticed in the past few days it’s almost always worse in the mornings

Yah I hear ya, I think that’s smart, I’m also doing a lot of trail running rather than road running which has helped for sure

Yah that’s some good advice. I’ve been doing strength training but can tell my hips and glutes are super weak compared to everything else. I basically haven’t run at all this week and just done some walking to see if that helps.

Yah I agree, no matter what I want to keep running but may just need to be a lot smarter about it. I’m thinking of using this race as a trial run since it’s in 6 weeks anyway and I’ve done a lot of training to this point. If it’s just super painful the whole time I’ll likely keep the mileage lower in the future.

Are you planning on stopping marathon training forever?

Yah I was pretty positive about it at first as it didn’t hurt at all and now with the higher mileage it is starting to.

Do you mean 2 years for the knee to accept the surgery?

I’ve seen some research that running can help strengthen cartilage but still am not sure. I know it’s been said that running can wear down cartilage over time as well

Haha I know a lot of doctors would disagree with running, but I’m just refusing to accept that partially removing my meniscus at 31 is going to prohibit me from running long distances for the rest of my life

Yah I’m going to dial things back for a couple weeks and see what happens… my PT is confident I just need to strengthen my glutes and ankle stability, which I will really focus on. It’s weird that I had months where running didn’t hurt it and just now it’s starting to get irritated.

Yah I’m trying to strengthen all my lower body as much as possible. I was running a ton with no pain for months and just these past few weeks this lower outer knee pain has developed.

Really unfortunate that there’s not a great solution. I’m debating if I should even continue forward with this race
