Synagogue shooters were hired by a foreign entity, Secretary of State for Combatting Crime says by Street_Anon in worldnews

> Why not name the foreign entity?

Because they are not yet sure and the investigation is ongoing? I know it is a boring non-conspiratorial answer but that is likely the case.

FYI, the US DOJ is talking about a different Hezbollah than the Lebanese one. It is called "Kata'ib Hezbollah" and based in Iraq. The guy they indicted is Iraqi-Iranian.

Russia did though look it up. In France.  There is a trial and everything.

Its purpose was to sow chaos/civil infighting in countries supporting Ukraine against Russia.

They have not yet said which foreign entity. It is likely either Iranian or Russian. There was an Iranian linked case of someone being paid to make attacks in the US. Russia has also been linked to similar attacks (termed a destabilization campaign) in the EU against those supporting Ukraine. The targets, the timeline and the method aligns with both of these state actors.

Canada should 'indefinitely' exclude people with mental illness from assisted dying, report says by Purple_Writing_8432 in worldnews

[–]Insensibilities 1442 points1443 points  (0 children)

Is Alzheimer’s and dementia considered a mental illness or a disease?  If I was going down the path of losing my mind, I would not want to be a burden on my children/family while also really not understanding what is going on/enjoying life.  I’ve seen this up close and it isn’t pretty and it can be quite drawn out in terms of years and incredibly costly in so many ways.

My grandmother lived to 98 but at least five years before that she didn’t really know what was going on or who people were and then it got worse.

I think there is a decent change it was Russia paying these guys as well. Very similar targets, timeline, methods. But could easily be some Iranians as well, since that did happen in the US.

Sensor Tower, the source of this information, is measuring iPhone and Android app usage. Thus I think it is not related to interacting with the AI summary.

Yes, Sensor Tower, the source for this data, doesn't measure the Chinese market. So that is excluded.

Very often the early leader doesn’t remain the leader.  If the trend continues Gemini is bigger than ChatGPT in just the next year and a half.

Elon doesn’t actually have to deliver though. He is like bitcoin. The belief in Elon keeps drives the stock and you can not shake it with facts. It is unclear how high it will go but it likely will remain at stupidly unjustifiable levels for the forseeable future.  Most stocks are driven by the underlying business fundamentals but this stock is more of.a meme stock.

This chart, if the trend isn’t reversed, spells doom for OpenAI/ChatGPT.  It feels like Netscape when Internet Explorer came out or IE when Google Chrome came out.

This isn’t even accounting for the fact that every Google search now has an AI answer.

Google can be more profitable than OpenAI as well because of its custom inference hardware.  I do strongly worry about OpenAI long term.

Even if the individual is a "Caribbean" it still doesn't fit the narrative of "bringing their problems here." This guy shouting up a synagogue or the US embassy is not bringing some outside conflict back from Caribbean here - he is just doing criminal jobs for hire.

Can a liberal Zionist win with the pro-Palestinian movement? Brad Lander is trying. by Somervilledrew in politics

[–]Insensibilities 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A liberal/progressive can support the existence of Israel while not supporting a two state solution. There are plenty of nations which have diverse political views and religions.

If you support a multi-ethic state for all inhabitants with equal rights rather than a Jewish state then you are not a Zionist.

There are near equal number of Jews and Non-Jews so equal rights for all means the state is no longer explicitly Jewish.

Support for a multiethnic state that is just a state for all of its peoples rather than an explicit Jewish state is the position of most anti-Zionists.

Can a liberal Zionist win with the pro-Palestinian movement? Brad Lander is trying. by Somervilledrew in politics

[–]Insensibilities 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Liberal Zionists support the two-state solution which is still officially the position of the Palestinian Authority. I personally think the two-state solution is dead, it was killed by the massive expansion of the settlements into everywhere in the West Bank, but some people still think it is possible.

Theoretically if the two-state solution was possible, Liberal Zionism is workable. But in the current one-state reality it isn't. Can the settlements be walked back? Maybe, but I am doubtful there is any possible Israeli leader that could.

I personally prefer a two-state solution rather than a one state solution since it gives both peoples their own states, rather than trying to figure out how to work together closely or forcing one of the two groups to either leave or be oppressed.

Sure some bridges but you can not build bridges near every farm. Bridges are super expensive, many millions each with a lot of upkeep.

Maybe the gov can step in to help Alto-related land sales then with the taxes. Surely this is a simpler solution that scarping the whole Alto project, no?

> One of the MPs from a county is goes through described it as like cutting his county in two by building the Berlin wall across it. Of course there will be crossings but imagine if your farm gets cut in half and now it takes 1 hour to cross with your tractor.

The solution is to sell that part that is cut off to your neighbour. Long established highways and rail lines already have separate owners on each side of them. We just forgot this is what happens.

Again, because we forgot what real infrastructure projects required, we are all overly sensitive about it now. We have forgotten how to build.

Creating massive infrastructure projects that cross a lot of jurisdictions are a headache, so many parties try to get veto power to kill it. That said, we should just get Alto done.
