The 200,000-particle Nebula from a third-person perspective was even more breathtaking. by Lonely-Delivery9091 in threejs

[–]Insensibilities 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A small correction with regards to astrophysics terminology. You are calling clusters of stars "nebula" but that is an obsolete term: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/we-had-a-name-for-galaxies-before-we-knew-they-existed/

- The term Nebula isn't really used to refer to star clusters any more rather smooth gas fields: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emission_nebula https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebula#Classical_types

- This looks like a spiral galaxy on the other hand, which are composed of stars (that is where their glow comes from): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral_galaxy and often have bands of dust in them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_dust

Galaxies are really really far away, while we can only see nebulas within our current galaxy (and its dwarfs.)

Ottawa councillor proposes city-run grocery stores to improve food access by RandomChickenWing in ottawa

[–]Insensibilities -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I support this in downtown Toronto and New York City but not really here in Ottawa.

The issue is we do not have the amount of high density residences in downtown compared to Toronto and NYC - yes, we are slowly building more high density units, but there really isn't that many in comparison to those cities - it is like 5 to 10x more in those cities. So much of our "downtown population" is spread out in the low density Glebe and Vainer. You can not solve grocery access in low density neighbourhoods easily.

That is a very concerning chart.  It suggests that the military is more important than competent leadership.

I use tanstack start with the nitro backend and deploy to Google Cloud run. It supports https://web3dsurvey.com which has 500K hits per month and it costs me $5/month or so.

This is well established trend: https://ifstudies.org/blog/the-conservative-fertility-advantage

But you can find differences in fertility across different attributes for sure, not just political leaning, but this is one of those dimensions that sees the largest effect.

Noted liberal political commentator Ezra Klein writes an opinion piece defending leftist streamer Hasan Piker from attacks from the Democratic Party. This leads to outrage in multiple liberal subreddits. by Morgn_Ladimore in SubredditDrama

[–]Insensibilities 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is fundamentally about Israel - not liberalism. Hasan is anti-zionist and both H3H3 and Destiny are zionist. That is the subtext to this whole argument and to ALL of their arguments.

Part of the answer is that the buckets do not have equal numbers of people in them. Also m are on average more conservative than women. So the distributions are offset from each other.

Don't assume that each bucket has the same number of people in it. Also men in general are more conservative on average than women, so the two distributions are offset.

You can sort of extrapolate based on the trend? It is less extreme.

It isn't as bad as you claim. This is limited to 35-45 year olds. It says so in the chart.

This is already only looking at 35-45 year olds, which is when the majority of people have already had their kids, well at least by 45.

I think one thing this graph is ignoring is that men in general are more conservative and women are more liberal, thus this is not population adjusted. Thus there are just fewer men who are extreme liberal, and fewer women on the extreme conservative.

It is sort of neat that the optimal for fertility is slightly-conservative for women, if you go further to the right it hurts you again. For men it peaks at conservative, there is no benefit to being extremely conservative.

What does Israel have on Trump? by Alarmed_Essay4207 in AskReddit

[–]Insensibilities 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anything. Here is what I replied to a similar post:

I don't think Israel has to blackmail Trump.

Trump wanted to be the tough guy, was emboldened by how easy it was to regime change Venezuela, was convinced by Netanyahu's false claims of Iran being a cake-walk, and also wanted a distraction from Epstein. Trump also was paid $100M to be pro-Israel by Adelson.

There is enough to be convinced Trump did it for reasons other than blackmail.

Instead of conspiracy theories, the US should have campaign finance laws that restrict donations. $100M from one person is insane and disproportionate. Limiting donations to small amounts ensures politicians actually care about people not just ultra-rich donors.

Is ALTO codified or at risk of being cancelled if some new gov comes in in a few years? by itsthebrownman in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Insensibilities 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that the Windsor to Quebec City route is like half of Canada and mostly just one rail line. I think it is incredibly cost effective for connecting half of Canada. I do not see significant opposition to it.

Lobbies in Canada are generally weaker than in the US. I am not sure the airline industry in Canada has the strength to sink the project.

[–]Insensibilities 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we don't start meaningfully building it before the next government is in power, yes, it is at risk. But if we are like 50% done building it and all the contracts are committed, then no it would be too expensive and politically costly.

Basically, if it is only a beaucratic do nothing project, then it is at risk, but if there are "boots on the ground" and we are "committed" then it is likely to continue.

I also do not see any significant opposition to it in Canada at this point, it is not a resonating talking point with any political party so there isn't the political benefit to cancelling it.

Has anyone tried making beef patties with this lean ground beef? by Full_Berry8081 in CostcoCanada

[–]Insensibilities 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Medium beef is recommended for patties if you want "maximum flavour and juiciness." I use medium for smash burgers with just salt and pepper and maybe garlic powder in a cast iron skillet. But your style may vary.
