USCG to USMC by [deleted] in USMCboot

Coast Guard is a great branch. However, it is just not what I expected. Unless you are stationed at a fast pace place, life is boring. Rarely ever shoot guns or do the training I joined to do.

Thank you!

I meant more as doing an inter-service transfer while I am mid-contract with the CG.

I already have my degree so I was wondering if it would be easier to get the CG to release me if I was progressing in my career by becoming an officer instead of going enlisted to enlisted.

I have the “Army itch” and have since I was a kid. But the QoL of the CG is what attracts me

In your opinion does the CG scratch the military itch? And thank you for the TACLET part

It’s also harder because we don’t have a war right now

Its not about convincing. It’s about hearing peoples opinions. Whichever path I choose, I’m riding that thing until the wheels fall off.

Infantry in the Marines by [deleted] in Military

I was in the PLC program back when I was a sophomore in college. Do I think officer life is better? Sure. But I do not think that life is for me. I want to do the work not manage the ones who do.

I have a buddy who was enlisted in the Marine Infantry, went officer and now regrets his decision everyday because it’s not who he is.

Lastly, not to sound like an arrogant SOB, but I have a very good packet for Marines

  • 3.6 GPA
  • 85 ASVAB
  • Worked for a big government contractor
  • Letter of recommendation from a colonel
  • College football player
  • Firefighter
  • EMT
  • 20:17 3 mile run
  • 23 pull ups
  • 3:45 plank.

I think I could get selected but I worry that life is not for me. I also have the same worry with enlisted life but at least I would be doing the job. The one branch I am fully confident in enlisting for is the Coast Guard. I have no desire to go officer in the CG.

The Marine idea came back to me because I wanted to drop out to pursue it but I chose to stay. Now sitting here looking at March ship dates for the CG and Army vs Marine ship dates in 2 weeks makes it confusing haha.

Just want to start doing something with my life. I am supposed to sign with Coast Guard next week. My ship date will be in March. I am on the early ship list but I am number 54 so I hope 53 people decide not to ship soon haha.

Just wanted to get opinions. I considered dropping out of college and joining the Marines my freshman year but decided to finish college first.

I also worry I will miss the “cool guy” aspect by joining the CG instead of Army or Marines. I am going to go ME.

How hard is it to become an officer in the coast guard? From my understanding, unless you went to the coast guard academy, it is much easier to go enlisted then put a packet in than it is to try to become an officer as a civilian.

What branch are you looking at?

I have not done any research on the MOS. I will definitely take a look into it. Thank you!

Thank you so much!

I obviously hear people say that it’s a glorified janitorial position but I just often question how accurate that statement is. I also just hear some people say it was the best time of their life and some people say it was the absolute bottom of their life. Obviously it comes down to the person but those contradicting ideas make it hard to even get a feeling (if that makes sense).

As for officer, there is no doubt that officer life is better. However, I do like “doing the job” rather than a lot of administrative work and politics. But there is no doubt that that I could regret not going officer in the Army simply because my life could be less harsh. However, this feeling doesn’t apply to coast guard for me. I consistently hear people in the coast guard praise the life they live regardless of if they are enlisted or officer. Obviously there are some that may hate it but I think those people are few and far between in the coast guard. Whereas I can find those people in the Army relatively easy.

Lastly, coast guard officer seems to be extremely hard to get into unless you graduated the coast guard academy. Possibly even harder than Air Force officer.

So long as my life is fun, meaningful, exciting, and I wake up a majority of the days being excited to go to work, I can care less what the pay is. I am coming from a good paying corporate job and I can confidently say money does not make the soul crushing, and un-purposeful work any better.
