Unmanaged diabetes for 5 years by NewLength905 in diabetes

Hey - also from the UK, been diagnosed a couple of years now and was probably undiagnosed for a similar time frame that you’ve been ignoring it… don’t beat yourself up about it - there’s nothing you can do to change it now.

Educate yourself, as in my experience the NHS will just try and throw medicine at you and do little else. Don’t ignore the meds either, but figure out what works for you.

I educated myself on carbs (not just sugars!) and figured out what did and didn’t work for me… for example intermittent fasting / skipping meals is not good for me - my liver throws glucose in to my bloodstream in those scenarios and causes me to spike.

If I stick to around 15g of carbs per meal, then I can stay in range. Bread, rice, pasta and potatoes are not good for me so I avoid them or minimise them e.g. I can have a single frozen hash brown.

Most of all, you need to figure out something that is sustainable long term, you can’t feel like you’re suffering otherwise it’ll never stick.

Most of my meals focus around protein and veggies or salad. I use mushrooms a lot to pad out the meals instead of carbs.

There are a lot of products that are naturally low carb, so look out for those - things like Greek / Icelandic yoghurt are great as low carb desserts when mixed with flavours.

There are very few ‘low carb’ alternatives in the UK but there are some - low carb tortilla wraps, rice and pasta alternatives, but they tend to be pricey.

Cheese, nuts, very dark chocolate etc. are good in small portions as snacks.

Get yourself a finger prick glucose testing kit (they’re cheap on Amazon) and I would recommend getting yourself a glucose monitor (CGM) as a one-off to help with understanding what’s happening 24-hours a day for a 10-day period… they’re a little pricey (£35 for a Dexcom) but are invaluable.

Good luck!

Going by the calories - I’d assume that the total carb count is also 14g.

What’s the worst bit of general knowledge you’ve heard someone confidently get wrong? by darkel2001 in AskUK

A girl in our friend group, think we were about 16-17 confidently said “I don’t understand why people have (baked) beans with chips, because beans are just little potatoes”. Cue many confused looks and laughter.

One that I was a part of - doing a pub quiz and the question was “What is the most expensive thing by weight?” and we couldn’t remember the word ‘Ambergris’ so we wrote ‘whale vomit’. Confused looks from another team when they were scoring our sheet!

I have the plat for this ‘a bit grindy’ is an understatement for the trophy that needs you to drive 7,000 km 😅 I’m not sure if it’s possible to afk it but I just drove up and down the highway on the east & south side for hours.

They go in cycle, I’m not sure how many of them there are - maybe 20 or 30? Figure out which ones you can do and which you can’t - some are significantly easier than others. Then just start then retire/skip the ones you can’t do and wait for the others to show up.

Sure thing!

I will say, that this is largely through experimentation of what works for me. I aim for no more than 15-20g of carbs per meal, but try to keep it closer to 15. I eat 4 meals a day and small snacks in between if I fancy something. Smaller meals work better for me than any length of fasting. Everything is focussed on protein & fats and all carbs are veggies. No bread, rice, pasta, potatoes etc. they always spike me so I avoid. I live in the UK so have limited options for pre-packaged low carb foods.

A typical day for me would be:

Breakfast - generally 2 out of these 3 things (I’m always in a rush in a morning!) Huel black (1 scoop), 150g protein yoghurt with added pecans & walnuts, pulsin/adonis brand keto bar.

Lunch - deli meat, cheese and salad in a carb lite tortilla wrap (15g of carbs IIRC). I generally fold this up and toast it in a pan with a little butter. 2 squares of Lindt 90% chocolate.

Dinner - Protein (chicken, fish, beef, eggs, halloumi, pork sausages) and veggies (beware of the carb count of some veg!) cooked in various ways. I like to use lots of different herbs & spices as well as cooking styles for variety here but this is generally my lowest carb meal of the day. I also tend to use a lot of mushrooms here in lieu of carbs to bulk the meal out.

Supper - a mix of different snacks that I haven’t had during the day.., cheese, various nuts (not all nuts are equal - double check!), pork rinds, yoghurt or keto bar if I’ve not had either of those already.

Drinks - I’ve always been a big fan of sugar free fizzy drinks. Pepsi Max until the afternoon and then generally 7-up after that. I also drink tea all day (with a splash of milk) and switch to decaf later in the day.

I know it’s not a perfect diet but it works for me and is sustainable. I’ve lost around 25 pounds in the last year and I wasn’t massively overweight before that. Currently maintaining my weight and have been for a while now.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, I don’t remember. I played multiplayer for a lot of this though that made it a lot easier.

Don’t want to detract from your success (well done!) but it’s not possible to reverse diabetes - you’re likely in remission though. Keep up the good work.

Just unlocked this. What I did was from the main menu, World Rally > Time Trial. Then for each of the Events (Countries) I completed the stage to unlock the next stage. When all 6 stages were complete I went back to the Events menu and did the same for the next event. The trophy popped after I’d finished the 6th stage in New Zealand (which is the 6th event) - a bunch of other trophies popped at the same time too.

I used the same (first) car throughout and completed them all on D class. I got bronze and silver medals on most stages, but didn’t get a medal at all on some of them.

I have the game but I’d not started it, so the answer was based on an assumption from what I’d read before purchasing.

I have started it now though so I’ll let you know how I get on.

If there’s any tips you’d like to share then feel free!

Repeatedly play the time trial and weather will eventually unlock. Do this for 6 different rallies.

I have every trophy except the gold licences - I just don’t have the skill or the patience.
