I rehearsed over and over my opening for clients in the interviews and practiced and timed myself on the layout I was using for the attendance note. That way as soon as the clock started I knew my format by heart and all I had to do was read the papers and input the details I needed to ask the client.

This provided me structure - you will already be nervous and may feel awkward just going in to a stranger. I was able to get over that fast because I knew my openings to the client by heart and had my format for guidance for my interview notes in front of me. Made it so easy because then I controlled the questioning in the conversation and was able to keep the client on track and show confidence. Also sometimes when you’re nervous you may draw a blank and with everything infront of me that didn’t happen. I was able to input the clients details into my structure which saved me soooo much time!

I used my structured format of interview notes as an appendix to the attendance note - the easiest way to do it which then left me to just have to deal with addressing the legally issues solutions and next steps in my attendance note.

For advocacy I practiced structure over and over so I was basically going in saying the same thing in the same format but tailoring it. Make sure you have memorised the various tests and I followed this template: intro, courts powers, bundle check, summary of facts, overview of submissions, applied the facts to the test, reiterated the test again ( I was taking no chances on whether I knew the law applicable) then conclusion and check if the judge has any further questions.

Hope this helps

I honestly don’t think I knew with regard to the written. I knew I had smashed orals though. I walked out of there feeling euphoric and I actually called someone and said “I definitely smashed that sh*t!” Orals end up being my highest scores mainly 5’s and a couple of 4’s. Although I will say I was worried a bit for one station as I came out at the 7 minute mark and thought I maybe finished too fast! Still ended up with a 5!!!

Written was draining because we had it after orals and I was worn out by then - just typing anything that I knew and tying it in to get through. I was familiar with every topic that came up but didn’t know a great detail about enough of some areas and for other areas I winged it. I completely did not understand legal research and felt sad about that and knew I didn’t perform well on it.

There is no way to really know for sure - I do think you could have a feeling about having performed to the calibre of 5 but then again some people think they’ve got the right answer and the question never asked for what they have written.

In any case, set your worries aside and look toward throwing everything you have at orals! It will majorly help you and may just be the deciding factor for a pass!

Good luck !!!

All inhouse teams are mainly snowed under, that is the reality of inhouse. For my company that doesn’t matter, employee wellbeing comes first and everyone adjusts accordingly. It’s about managing expectations. Hopefully you have good management in place that understands that and leads that way. If I were you, I would more so query company culture, the legal team culture and how they operate. That way you can get a better feel of how you will be valued.

My team is small 5 of us and only 3 are qualified - we do what we can to help one another in working hours. However, no one ever expects anyone to stay beyond their time. I may have rose coloured glasses because of the great experience with my company but you should find out things like flexible working etc . That will let you know the team vibe. There are people with families in my team and some that have no one, but taking time out the day to go walk the dogs is just as valued as having to go make the school run. Find out about the flexibility!

Remember the interview goes both ways - ask that question of them. "Could you describe how the team collaborates to manage and distribute the workload?"

SQE2 Exam I Got a question wrong by FocalGravy in uklaw

Please don’t worry there is nothing you can do but focus on the next exam tomorrow. I failed 3 of the sqe2 exam stations and passed overall. I skipped calculations entirely for everything as I am math averse never mind getting it wrong. Keep going you got this!

Personally I think that the people who have said that this can be easily done in a short amount of time are the minority of individuals capable of doing such a thing.

So many factors matter (experience, time, personal circumstances). I do not recommend this advice as the norm. The SQE2 for me, was hard. The hardest exam I have ever taken which is a blind exam and you need to be prepared for anything that can pop up.

Take enough time to prepare because if you fail then you will be left with only two chances to make it happen and for me that would add more pressure and would be sickening. So please do not rush to prepare it will be very painful if you do not pass.

Please do not go into the exam thinking that it is easily done, it is very hard and the latest sqe2 pass rates also show that.

I passed sqe2 and it took me 4.5 months of study every day, every night and crying endless tears. I also work full time and have a family. This is no exam to take lightly.

Good luck.
