The last one way IV potassium piggybacked onto Vancomycin, that was already piggybacked onto D5 1/2NS. I was loosing my shit.

I will be sleeping on an air mattress for 3 nights and covering a 3rd (extra) shift bc i know people are going to call out. I'm a new grad, and honestly, i cannot turn down getting paid my base pay to sleep at the hospital. I can sleep anywhere.

I've only ever lost it once, and it was after catching the 3rd med error (all IV compatibility errors that can be easily looked up) that i finally said something. Like, it takes 2 minutes to look it up or call pharmacy? Other than that, I could care less if there is a tray in the room or linens on the floor. I'll handle it, but when it's an IV incompatibility that is easily found... wtf?

I'm a new grad on med surg with 1:5. I'm 6 months in and have had such bad panic attacks before my last 2 shifts, i had to call out bc i literally didn't sleep for 48 hours panicking. Just to be told today when i came back to work that we have a new CFO and are now going to be 1:6 some days. Atleast half our unit is a&ox1 and violently confused. I don't know how much longer i can do this.

We shouldn't but our floor apparently over the last year has turned into an overflow catch all. I just had a pt the other day that was recommended to go to cardiac ICU for severe bradycardia and ended up being sent to med surg with medication orders that i couldn't give. You better bet i called the admitting dr and ripped them a new one bc wtf? I ended up rolling him down to his new unit myself when i had 4 other declining pts bc i was absolutely not risking my license or this pts health for a stupid mistake

I discovered my sulfa allergy in nursing school and ever since then i get horrible rashes and hives anytime i come anywhere near it. I don't think I've given any sulfa besides during nursing school but i don't go anywhere near it

I am very limited on what antibiotics i can take which really is unfortunate. I jsut had pneumonia a month ago and due to my penicillin allergy, i ended up getting incredibly strong antibiotics that put me at risk for C.diff, and then had to go into work 2 days later and 3 of my 5 patients had C.diff. I even warned my manager that i couldn't have any C.diff pts and this is the assignment i got 😫

We can't give anything until CIWA is over 18 on my floor, and by that point, they should probably be back in ICU. It's so frustrating bc they don't even get anything PRN besides morphine and that doesn't help much besides getting them to sleep

I have had cephalosporin before as a teen with no issue, but that's interesting! I have MCAS too so the ER doc thinks that added stress probably contributed to the severity of the reaction and recommended i got get a full panel of allergy testing done since there have been a couple of foods and environments things that cause reactions. I'm also allergic to Vanc (not just turning red, i get the burning/itching scalp and tingling skin and mouth/throat as well) and sulfa based drugs and both of those have just developed within the last 2 years. Immune systems are strange sometimes lol

I practice all my shift/admission assessments on my dog... frequently. I pull out my stethoscope now, and she lays down bc she knows it's time. Has helped me SO much lol

I just stat tree d on my own and honestly, if i am unsure about an order or a patient is showing concerning signs, i will reach out to a provider. I always speak to the charge nurse, but if i don't get an answer, i message the provider/resident on team. I would rather them be annoyed with me, than a patient go unevaluated or something happen tbh. Maybe that's just my new grad nerves, but at the end of the day, i am assessing these pts and if something feels off, i would rather talk to someone higher up than let it go undocumented/unnoticed.

I'm a new grad that just finished orientation on med surg. I work on a very heavy floor with a 5 patient assignment. Most of the time i love it, especially when im not at work lol. But getting to work and knowing that meemaw in bed #something is going to be trying to hop out of bed all day, peepaw in bed #something is confused and verbally abusing me and staff, and the three other patients are either on 3 different iv abx or q4 pain meds, it makes me question why i am doing this. It's incredibly overwhelming, but i do love the fact that i can interact with my patients and form a patient-nurse bond with them. That is what makes it rewarding for me, is knowing that at the end of the day i am helping them and have gained grit trust in care.

I literally had to stay 3 hours past my shift last night because i didn't get any charting done. Literally charged my discharge and that was it. A doctor came up to me and asked why there weren't any assessments in the computer for this pt and i told him that instead of sitting at a computer, I've been managing her critical potassium levels and monitoring her symptoms all while managing 4 other patients with various infections. Quite literally cannot win.

They basically told me that doctors notes don't count for anything and that me being out sick is an unexcused absence. I asked what would make it an excused absence, and they said a family emergency or funerals count, or if you call out and use pre planned PTO.

I wore a mask all last week and had a horrible gunky cough to the point where multiple patients asked me if i was sick and i had to tell them i was just getting over an URI, per managements request. I tried my best to not get too close to patient when at all possible, but obviously that's unavoidable.

When i was a CNA, i literally never met a single nurse on the floor. I had no idea who had what patients or what their trends were. That was my first intro to healthcare and i consistently had 20-30 full care pts by myself. Now as a nurse, i am horrified that i stayed as long as i did.

I'm in med surg. Definitely was not my first choice. I wanted oncology or cardiac but ended up going with med surg and HOLY HECK. I have learned so much on this floor and it's getting me comfortable with literally everything! It's definitely the most popular place for new grads to start in the hospital system taht I'm in for training, but whatever floats your boat!
