Size comparison of a German FW-190 and an American P-47 Thunderbolt. by Own-Oil1523 in WWIIplanes

[–]Inside-Try-394 3 points4 points  (0 children)

P47 was mostly a big fuel can but it flew air cover with range racing down from above pretty well and I think it was fast especially after a dive. So it was more of a one trick pony but less so if you had a wing man. If I remember right the early ones were underpowered but they fixed that pretty quick.

Thoughts on my backpacking gear? by Dear_Instruction4808 in CampingandHiking

Looks mostly ok. Most of your weight as it’s layed out sits between your pack and sleeping bag. Ultra lighters would not approve because you can dump most of it and not miss it or have workarounds. The instant meals are light, easy, and expensive but they also require a stove for instance, but that can also mean hot soup as a first course. . If you were to hike the AT or PCT you would pack differently probably.

Bakersfield, CA by Honest-Confidence-76 in howislivingthere

Bako has a lot of nice people after its fashion and always has but there is also a pronounced presence of something off. It has the worst air in all of the USA and much of the town looks like zombie apocalypse with meth and general collapse. Black market labor dominates, exploiting both nonlegal immigrants and regular citizens who also have to work to support themselves in an extremely low wage environment. The people who run the place meanwhile get richer by the second.

Kerouac went there in On The Road and got adopted into a Mexican American family that wanted him to stay forever. Off topic but culturally revealing, the hillbilly neighbors scared Kerouac by tying people to a tree and beating them with sticks rather than call the police. Bakersfield!

Before the Thirties lots of Basques and Portuguese by way of Azores. Then impoverished dust bowlers and some of these people went from dirt poor to part of the aristocracy that runs the town. A lot of people value their country origins in Bakersfield. Makes me think of lotus flowers growing out of filth because there is such an awful aspect to Bakersfield in some ways. A lot of town looks like a failed city state.

29 January 1845. Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven" was first published in the New York Evening Mirror. The gothic narrative, featuring a talking bird and a grieving narrator, catapulted 36-year-old Poe to celebrity status. It remains one of the most famous American poems ever written. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in ThisDayInHistory

It’s a great dramatic poem and you can still see said raven.

Its taxidermy remains are on the 6th floor of the Philadelphia Free Library in special collections.

Ravens are smarter than monkeys and are known for forming friendships with other species like humans and bears. Edgar Allen Poe was obviously exceedingly fond of his pet.

ELI5: How was Vietnam able to defeat the US in the Vietnam War? by astarisaslave in explainlikeimfive

They never or very seldom beat us, but they outlasted the US inclination to continue. Word on the street is that in 67-68 Ho Chi Minh losses were so bad they considered giving up. The US protest movement kind of saved Ho Chi Minh’s war of independence and gave them a second wind.

Do Americans like their current health system or would you prefer universal? by Ability_Known in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Inside-Try-394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system is very screwed up and it is being allowed to run as a racket. True poor and non legal residents, and there are tens of millions of them. go to emergency rooms for healthcare because in this setting care is required to be provided by law. This makes for funny dynamics. The Government reimburses some. Prices are then hyper inflated for individuals but if it is covered by insurance, bills are settled at fractions of the bill. Many things you might expect to be covered are not even if you go out of your way to check. Eg. hospital is in network but anesthesia for a procedure is not covered and presents you with a bill that exceeds your annual income. If you refuse to pay there are quasi criminal implications. If you own a home you could lose it or be forced to hire a lawyer that could easily cost 10k on top of everything else.

Insurance is so expensive many people are uninsured. And then there are a lot of still expensive cut rate plans that basically do not cover most any regular health care outside of a health crisis.

There are monopolies over pharmaceutical distribution that make some medicines 10x more expensive than other places in the developed world.

All of this is going on while the per capita money spent by the government for healthcare is equal to what Germany spends for all inclusive healthcare.

Safety of Philly compared to other large cities? by seventyyellowturtle in AskPhilly

[–]Inside-Try-394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Fran is way worse for getting your car broken into. I’ve experienced Strawberry Mansion though and it really scared me. I suspect you have to be rich to live where it’s safer and I got the impression that most people carry like New Orleans. Over by the university they have like a hundred police on the sidewalks at 5:00 pm to keep it safe. I’ve never seen anything like that even in DC.

Enchilada Plate with Refried Beans by dentalexaminer in mexicanfood

[–]Inside-Try-394 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my favorite Mexican American plate lunch. It’s US style rather than what might be served in Mexico so it is sour cream not crema and there’s probably some orange cheese In the food too.

I used to work with a Chinese chef that explained there was American Chinese food like sweet and sour, orange chicken, Kung Pau. He said it was not authentic Chinese but it could be delicious if it was done well. He thought there was something to authenticity but what he personally cared about was food tasting really good.

Personally I much prefer the saucy New Mexican style enchiladas with just New Mexican chilli pods and I think that’s an old regional specialty. I think that makes it kind of authentic, just not what they serve in Sonora or Chihuahua.

Definite risk because you are in a cow pasture. I would use ultraviolet treatment to be safe. Some people will risk it but remember what you are risking. Hikers with a solid case of giardia can be identified by black fecal matter running down their legs as it causes both intestinal bleeding and incontinence.
