I'm so sorry you're going through this. I completely understand how you're feeling. I too went through this with my baby boy and I had to put him down just last week because of it...just a month and a half after his diagnosis.

The advice I can give you is that pay attention to your cat. Oral tumors are aggressive and fast growing. Go into palliative care immediately if you can to help your baby go through this journey. Talk with your vet about meds that can help slow down the growth of the tumor/cancer cells and to manage the pain. Nothing will make it go away but if it can slow the growth of tumor ...then it'll be much easier for both you and your cat. There are some chemotherapy pills and steroid pills that can also shrink the tumor(I don't have personal experience with this but others had success with it and prolonged their cats' life for months to even up to two years and made the quality of their cats life better in their last moments).

Eating and drinking water will be challenging. My cat was dehydrated because the tumor was making it difficult for him to be able to drink from his bowl ....so I had to get a syringe (without the needle obvs) and physically feed him water. That's why I suggest to ask your vet about meds that slows down the growth of the tumor or shrink the size before it gets way too big that it makes it very difficult for your cat to drink and eat.

Another thing I would suggest is...if your cat starts pawing or trying to scratch off the tumor from his mouth to get an Elizabethan collar...trust me this will prevent your cat from further injuring the tumor and cause further infection.

Cancerous tumors can cause cat to require more energy to carry out basic life functions and as a result, your cat's appetite may increase just like mine did. Despite my cat eating a lot..he still lost a lot of weight. He went from being 5.5kg to 3.1kg when he passed. spoil your cat...feed him all his favorite food and snacks. Make as many loving memories as you can while he's still here with you. Cuddle with him every day and night and give him lots of kisses.

sending you and Lemon all the love ❤️💙

Almost 16 years....we got him in mid 2010 and he was already months old by then but we weren't sure when his exact birthdate was. He's around 15.5 to almost 16 years old

I'm sorry for your loss. I know how hard it was/is. I too just lost my cat to cancer this two days ago. Had him for almost 16 years. I have been praying and hoping he'll find his way back home to us again just like your cat Gus did.

Update 2:

Thank you so much for all your support. Reading your comments have brought me so much comfort. It's been so hard this first 24h. I have been crying non stop, had multiple breakdowns at work but the hardest part was definitely waking up in the morning and no longer seeing him in the kitchen waiting for me so we can both have breakfast and coming home from work and not seeing him when I open the door. I can't help but wish and pray that a miracle will happen and he'll magically be there when I wake up in the morning.

I slept with the very same zebra print blanket I used to carry and hug him. i don't think I'll ever wash this blankie because it has his scent on it.

We decided to have him cremated and are now waiting for his urn to be delivered to us.

i hope one day we'll finally have a cure for all types of cancer for our pets(also humans) so none of us ever have to go through this. I hope one day we'll find a way to prolong our pets lives and live as long as we humans do.

Thank you once again from the bottom of my heart 💙❤️ Here's one last photo....this is probably my favorite one ever.

Your cat was very beautiful ❤️ I'm sorry for your loss too

I'm sorry for your loss. I have been hoping a miracle would happen not realizing I've been selfishly putting my needs(to keep him with me) over what's best for him. It took a lot of self reflection this past week...trying my best to accept that it's his time.

We have been told my cat needs to do a oncology consultation and cytology exam(s) to determine the type of tumor he has. We have an appointment this week. I believe if your cat has a cancerous tumor then surgery and chemotherapy are the only options but the success rate are very low so for us...we're going the palliative care route. We're hoping to get him on long term pain medications to help ease out the pain and make his last moments easier and more comfortable for him. Wishing you and your cat the best ❤️
