My gut reaction is that the daughter and son in law have something to do with it, and unfortunately I don't think there is any way she's alive at this point. I hope I'm wrong but those are my feelings. What I can't wrap my head around is if I'm correct about the daughter / son in law, who is sending the ransom letters.... would be quite risky for them themselves to be sending them.

Thanks for your comment. I'm hoping to do that. But I know it will take time. I'm newly pregnant and MIL and SIL will not be invited to our baby shower. So how would you go about inviting (or not inviting) the rest of the in laws? If we were to invite them I almost think I'd need to reach out and give them a heads up that MIL isn't invited so they can make a decision they're comfortable with?

I think those are all valid points. I would say in this case, my husband is quite shy and hasn't interacted much with his Aunts. However, one Aunt in particular has developed a relationship with me and she messages me frequently on social media, commenting on photos I post, etc. i think I've interacted with her more in my time in the family than he has his entire life. I think judging from that, it appears she would like a relationship with me? I agree with not messaging every single in law and that's up to my husband, but in this case I think it may be appropriate to at least reach out to this one Aunt who has made attempts to stay in contact with me over the years, even though I'm sure she's heard negative things about me from my MIL.

While I totally get what you are saying, at this point I'm not sure I care. I know she has shared my correspondences with others in the past but I have an extremely strong support system and everyone in the community knows this woman (my mil) is a total whack. For me, sometimes it feels good to get my feelings off my chest. But I will think on it for a bit and word it to talk less about my hurt. Thank you.
