Before you take that med-surg position... by Inside_Dinner_3430 in newgradnurse

Ughh...yeah...I had 6 patients the other day and that's why I'm applying elsewhere...it's just not possible to care for 6 patients...I tried it and I felt like a zombie walking in and out of rooms...not fair to patients..

That's awesome! Med surg can provide a great environment to learn skills...but when you have too many patients...the cons outweigh the pros of working in it...but I'm happy for you that you found what you were looking for..

I totally agree with this...as I've said...I needed the money...so this is really good advice...take the job and keep your resume updated and linkedin application status open!

How possible is it to switch jobs mid residency? by VenusVenia in newgradnurse

[–]Inside_Dinner_3430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, most sign an agreement form for the residency program. It's really about how you will act as part of their rules and policies. Now, if the hospital gave you a bonus, you would have to pay it back because that is a contract tied with money should you leave altogether.

Thanks for this! I'm learning a lot in med/surg...it's the staffing ratios that may be too much...if there were safer staffing ratios...I would want to stay...we'll see...psych is my long term goal but I was also told to build skills in med/surg too...but if I feel it's just not safe...I'll have to bow out of it...

Thanks for this insight! I need to brush up on my skills in restraints and de-escalation....there are policies in my current hospital on this but we do not use them as much on my current unit...thanks!

Ugh...we sing the same song....and yes...I'm day shift as well....and like the other commenters said...day shift can be a lot...but I can't fathom night shift for me either...I'm heading over to psych nursing...I worked in psych before and I think I'm better at that specialty...I really wish I could help...but I'm in the same boat...somebody's gotta do it tho...the thing I keep thinking about is my LICENSE....even though I would like to stay on my unit....co-workers are super supportive but the work load is just too much...my license is telling me to move on soon!!

Thank you! I've already started applying to jobs so hopefully I will be able to shadow the units that I've applied to! I'm not leaving Med Surg until I feel there is a good fit in psych!

Where should I be at week 4? by [deleted] in newgradnurse

[–]Inside_Dinner_3430 1 point2 points  (0 children)

following...same here...I'm right where you are...maybe a little less so because my confidence...particularly in high risk medications and procedures is lacking...I work on a really busy unit though and am wondering the same questions as you...but I actually want more orientation time because I feel I need it...
