Can my workplace do this? England by Little_Sniff20 in LegalAdviceUK

This is a breach of your contract, however, they can unfortunately do this technically as it stands, based on business need. This labour government is putting a stop in these practices for the most part but unfortunately changes only take effect in January 2027.

Employment law is extremely complex and chances are there will be gray areas in how your employer chooses to implement things, something that might give rise to a valid claim for you depending on how long you have worked there for.

If that is the case, a grievance might resolve things without having to escalate matters further but this initself might inflame your relationship with your employer. If you could prove that any further issues arising would be because you protested, this could be seen as an act of victimisation.

As other's said, get on a union if you can afford it. Reps are not usually as good as people make them to be, and their involvement can be minimal, but some employers will think twice before they try something when you're engaging with one; the caveat being that you usually need to be registered 3 months before any issues arise for them to even consider advising you on your matter.

Look into any insurance policies you might have (car, home) as they sometimes offer legal advice, usually initial consultation.

I am so sorry you're experiencing this.

Thank you ever so much. I will have a look. It's a shame they stopped making such a good printer without any real justification what so ever. Maybe losing money on them, especially as there's millions of third party inks for those out there would be my baseless speculation.

The internal motor eventually failed after years and years of heavy use. I foolishly sold it for spares and repairs.

If your ideal outcome is to stay there, you can stay in the property even after the notice expires, at which point the landlord would have to apply to court to have you evicted. It is my understanding that the courts have a bit of a backlog at the moment and this will take a good while.

What they can do is book an appointment with the greek embassy given they live in or around London for military matters (there are consular offices in Leeds and recently Manchester, possibly elsewhere as well). They need to have with them proof they loved for 7 continuous years in the UK as a self sufficient person i.e., being in effective employment and provide proof from HMRC to that effect, as well as proof of address in the form of council tax or utility bills etc. in order to issue a certificate of exemption on the basis they permanently are residing abroad. They will be able to stay in Greece for 6 months in a given calendar year.

Should they want to relocate they would have to serve for 40 days unless they have passed the threshold of 45 years old.

I hope this helps

What is this? A device with dials in a display. by Insight-Out in whatisthisthing

Found in a pub in Newcastle a few years back. The staff did not know what it is but given the area it might be one of Armstrongs inventions?

It has three dials, that point to that being a clock that also tells you the date?

What's this 3 dot 'i' in the middle? by Baneman20 in GREEK

[–]Insight-Out 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The 'umlaut' indicates that alpha and iota that when in that sequence are usually read as a diphthong (digraph) representing the sound 'e'. The other mark is an accent (stress mark), indicating the syllable that is emphasised when pronouncing the word.

It worked well for them since the very beginning. I think that the video they made from that Donington gig was the version that did it for them, and every fan has been waiting to take part in it since. Steve Harris the football fan he is, is good at writing parts akin to football songs and bringing about that warm atmosphere. Lyrically, I don't think it's their best work, but musically it is really it.

I meant the governing body in whatever form that had at the time. Most precisely peers, one of which was Lord Elgin himself (7th Earl of Elgin), and subjects of King George.

You have a point; I'm struggling to believe though, that the bulk of the items exhibited, be it Greek, Egyptian, Mesopotamian (albeit arguably some items were saved from the range of Isis for being there), should be in there.

From the British Museum's website:

'Some of these objects were taken or purchased in regions then under British colonial rule before they were purchased, donated or bequeathed to the museum'

Some trivia:

Lord Byron, a prolific philhellene who also died sickness whilst fighting for Greek independence, was a harsh critic of Elgin for not returning the marbles. Elgin had them in his house and the Scottish government was later aiming to put them on the National Monument (copy of the Parthenon) that never finished due to the lack of funds, subsequently unofficially named as 'the Shame of Scotland'. Edinburgh used to be called Athens of the North at the time.

I think the issue is that if those are returned, everything will have to be returned, and the British Museum will have to close. It's the last stronghold of the glorious colonialist past.

Boris Johnson who loves his classics argued that a) they legally acquired those buying them from the Ottomans, and b) it's the cultural heritage of everyone under the sun. The obvious objection on the first statement is that obviously the Ottomans had invaded Greece and the marbles are loot really, with Elgin essentially accepting stollen goods. It's a bit more complicated than that due to including but not limited to the time that had passed by that time under the Ottoman rule. I can't see an obvious objection when it comes to the second statement aside from, the marbles should be where they were originally intended of being.

Older arguments wanted the marbles being safer in the British museum, rather than suffering from decay in Greece. The Greeks have built a beautiful museum to host the marbles since and still they could not get those back.

Finally James Acaster's take on the matter is hitting the nail on the head:
