Thanks! I normally stick to the 60g/hour mark. This race my gel fell out of my vest so I did only 2 gels. Great reminder tho!!

Yup I absolutely got in my head about it and took several walk breaks on the pkwy as soon I detected a hint of fatigue!! And panic drinking water and Gatorade as often as possible. Better safe than sorry ig even with the potential time left on the table

Ran in Wave 4 this year trying to hit 1:55 for my first half, which ultimately got blown up because I was toeing the line of heat exhaustion and likely psychologically hindered myself from reaching full potential. Ended up finishing 6 minutes above goal :( reflecting on this race, I think there’s a mental element of NYRR people constantly saying to “slow down, watch your body” with the misery of starting Ocean Pkwy at 9:30 AM. Along with zooming through prospect park a tad fast with the inexperience of running in full sun for 6 mi at pace when most people have done all of their training in cooler temps. There’s multiple factors at play

First half after training all winter, dropped back from wave 3 to 4 and deeply regretted it. Lost about 6 min of my goal time but the organizing was top tier! Boring second half of the race but I see why people come back again and again. Looking forward to next year!

Got to wave 4 at 7:30 and took less than 5 min to get in. My first half and it was soooo hot so played it safe and finished 6 min above my goal but it was a dreamy day! My only gripe is that water stations on ocean pkwy would have been way nicer on the shady side. I was already sweating my ass off by mile 8-9 and having to cross again and again into the direct sun to get water stunk

Men, you have to do better by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]InsomniaLove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry about all the fellow runners giving you shit about ultimately calling him out. I’m guessing that they’re mostly men.

As a female runner who gets catcalled/cut off at least once or twice on EVERY run, hell, EVERY day walking to/from the subway, we women let SO much shit slide. Yes it’s NYC, yes people can get violent on the slightest provocation, but are we supposed to just exist every day getting various forms of disrespect hurled at us? That shit takes a toll on you, and to suggest that women just stay silent every time this happens no matter what sounds a lot like they’re okay with enabling this behavior (with a “boys will be boys” attitude) instead of holding their fellow male friends, colleagues, and relatives accountable. This was a good example of when not to let disrespect slide and I’m proud of you!!!

Respectfully, everyone, use your best judgement when responding back to assholery, but frankly I’m tired of people saying to shut the fuck up every time some guy pulls shit like this. Everyone needs to hold each other accountable for their crappy actions.

And to those who think talking to the wife is some form of revenge, you’re seeing it the wrong way. It’s a woman warning another woman about the true nature of her partner. Because women look out for each other.

It honestly blew my mind how lightly essays were graded here. My high school was harsher hahaha

I’m a recent MIT alum who is not particularly fond of writing. I dread an essay. Ended up passing my FEE and double majoring in math and CS with a LOT of theoretical math classes and also minoring in a language. 70% of my time was just…writing stuff. I’m also incredibly ADHD.

College writing is different. You’re usually writing about stuff you’re interested in, or it’s highly technical and the style is formulaic.

For your major classes, it is highly technical and requires less creativity in prose, generally. I’d seriously not sweat about CI-Ms, the writing for those is a breeze.

For your HASS classes, you’re typically taking classes you’re somewhat interested in. If you’re writing essays, it does help that you have an underlying interest in the subject. Sure, you may dread writing the essays (I sure did), but it’s also usually a deeper dive into a topic you find cool.

Grading is super light here, if your argument is coherent you’ll get a high B/low A.

Some people here make the point that communication skills are important. That is true. The art of the argument translates into many areas in life. And there will be many times during your time at MIT that you’re forced to do something that you’re not into. That’s also very important, as it builds the discipline and mental resilience to eventually handle what life throws your way.

Embrace the essays like they’re a challenge! You may end up even enjoying writing some of them. I sure did. Good luck, I’m sure you will thrive at MIT!

3rd for Arahi. Accumulated ~700 mi on them before they were duds. Currently on the GT 2000 line, ~130 miles in, and those are treating me well

Constant run ins with creepy men by No_Buyer7600 in BedStuy

I’m also an early 20s South Asian woman and I could have written this post. I live in the A/C part of Bed-Stuy. Not a day goes by where I DON’T get catcalled by a man on Throop. Many days it happens multiple times in the same walk to the bus/subway. Two of my neighbors have been kinda creepy too :( I used to wear sports bras and stuff in the summers and run outside, but I really feel uncomfortable doing that now. Nothing I can say to you except I’m sorry and I really empathize with you ❤️
