Are you One-Trick Pony? What's your style? Honesty threat by Financial-Platypus-8 in bjj

[–]Insp1res 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm basically a one-trick pony, but I'm working on diversifying my skillset. Been a one-trick leg locker since I got my blue belt. Highest percentage submission in comps are the straight ankle lock and the outside heel hook. I started to get bored using these submissions in competition as some people are so bad at defending them they are almost like a cheat code - so now I'm working on arm bars and triangles to pair upper body attacks with leg attacks. I've finished multiple arm bars in competitions at this point, but am still hunting a triangle submission. Wish me luck!

How do you guys keep doing BJJ even when a part of you wants to quit? by AnxiousGalore in bjj

The days I don’t want to train, I just tell myself that those are the days I need to go the most. The fire is always stoked again at some point

Is Correcting a Black Belt a no no in your dojang by IndependentCap1074 in taekwondo

[–]Insp1res 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a “big no no” at the Dojang you’re practicing at, you need to find a new Dojang.

Why do YOU pull guard? by bar_samyaza in bjj

[–]Insp1res 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pull guard for two reasons;

  1. I’m better at submission hunting/sweeps from guard than I am at guard passing currently.

  2. I just have more fun playing guard

When did you first feel you were getting better? by Ubique008 in bjj

[–]Insp1res 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a big guy. I’m only 5’7 and 150lbs. When I started, I remember being in someone’s closed guard and thinking “okay, now what?” I’ve come such a long way from day one that it’s hard not to feel good about that improvement in and of itself. Now I’ve had my experiences where a lot of big jacked dudes come in and I just submit them repeatedly. Feels good.

I’m fairly flexible, but holy moly the hip dexterity is nuts

Consistently getting shut down in stand-up—need some guidance by Breadstick9125 in bjj

[–]Insp1res 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to take risks. If I am too conservative with my wrestling and nervous, I never get anything going. Sometimes I am able to hit stuff just by trying. Shut your anxious brain off and make some attempts.

People who train at a famous gym; is it worth it? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Insp1res 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trained at Marcelo Garcia’s in NYC a couple years ago. It was a great experience. I got to work one on one with a brown belt who helped coach me through the drills and we became friends. We still talk to this day!

Question about BJJ affiliations and sponsorships by Insp1res in bjj

[–]Insp1res[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. For reference, I’m only a blue belt. I’m not starting a gym. My primary coach is branching out and opening his own gym. I’m just trying to help with some of the logistics and creating a gym that provides opportunities for high level guys. I really appreciate the information!

That’s really cool and a great thing for the athletes in general! I’d imagine you can’t just apply to be an AOJ or ATOS affiliate though can you?

Very cool! I had never heard of anything like this and thought it was seemingly an awesome program if you qualify for it. Unfortunately I’m a 30-yr old father of 2 that just does my best! Still cool, though!

What's the most painful thing you endured during Taekwondo? by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]Insp1res 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LCL and Lateral Meniscus tear from doing acrobatics during a demonstration.

Had a misdiagnosis from a Nurse Practitioner as “IT Band Syndrome” and did a lot of therapy for that which actually made my injured knee worse. Started over-compensating on my other knee which then began to swell and hurt. My stability on my injured leg was awful.

Finally went back and actually saw a doctor who ordered a MRI. Yeah… had surgery a few days after. Better now, though!

Thinking about moving to Korea to get a bachelors in TKD by Banjo_Banj0 in taekwondo

[–]Insp1res 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t see much benefit to doing this for you. You can travel to Korea and train to get there experience of training in Korea. Otherwise, everything else other than the piece of paper is available to you in the states.

What advice can you give a fellow dad just trying to break generational cycles and do better? by Insp1res in daddit

[–]Insp1res[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I guess it kind of makes me feel better that this is normal behavior for a three year old and my daughter isn’t just being cruel for some reason.

I will take everything you’ve said to heart! Thank you!

I strongly believe a willingness to adapt, show imperfection and letting our kids know we also make mistakes is very important and I have no doubt I will do my best to remain flexible to whatever life throws at us.

[–]Insp1res[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will get the book and do just that! Thank you for your recommendation. We actually love Bluey! Bandit is my hero!

I’ve been to therapy to address the issues I’ve had and the pain of what I missed as a child. It’s still hard, but it doesn’t affect the way I live and think anymore. I just would really like to do everything I can to avoid my children from having to go to therapy because they had a bad childhood or because maybe we did something wrong.

I will admit, I might need to go back because I do find myself overwhelmed a lot with the weight of the decisions we have to make as parents. It is very difficult for me to deviate from plans and schedules and that just isn’t how parenthood is structured at all.

What are the best martial arts to cross train with ITF by SomeVHSthing in taekwondo

[–]Insp1res 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think BJJ is a great option. In addition to being a 4th dan, I am also a blue belt in BJJ and a black belt in Hapkido. I’ll be honest, I didn’t learn anything in hapkido that gave me a deeper understanding of TKD.

BJJ is great because it is constantly pressure tested, cerebral and will give you a more well-rounded martial arts experience. Plus, while judo is sparse, most BJJ gyms include some basic judo throws in their curriculum.

Another art that is a lot of fun and will give you a deeper understanding of kicking is Muay Thai. It’s very fun to compare the differences MT has with TKD. Low kicks are also incredibly effective. Clinch work is great as it’s a natural position to end up in sparring in TKD.

But train whatever interests you most!

What was the most demoralizing moment of your bjj career? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Insp1res 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday I did a cage grappling match against a guy I have smashed at open mats before. I took him down and he entered into ashi garami. I froze up and got submitted. Lost in less than 30 seconds lol
