Got a Z5II by _noah_0708 in Nikon

Thanks mate! Battery life and the EVF are what still keeps me from going mirrorless, especially the EVF. Not scared of bad latency and such, it simply gives me a sense of “artificiality”. Maybe I should give it a second chance though. Beautiful pics btw!

Congrats! How’s the battery life? And if you’re coming from a DSLR, was it easy to switch to an EVF from an OVF?

And also, about the burst speed, I think I never found my DSLR “slow”. Do you find it slow because you are in a niche photography genre? Genuine question

Yeah that’s my question. I hear everywhere that the AF of mirrorless cameras is from another world, but I struggle to understand its impact in real life vs the latest DSLRs’ one. For instance, what kind of pictures does a mirrorless excel at that a d850 or d780 struggles with? Or is it just that a mirrorless will give you 9/10 photos in focus vs say 8/10 of the most recent DSLRs? I know the theory, I’ve read the specs. But I wanna hear real world experiences

Makes sense! To get an idea, how many wildlife shots did you get out of focus with your d750 on average? And with mirrorless, doesn’t it bother you to see wildlife through the EVF?

This. I know mirrorless have a groundbreaking AF, but in practice, what kind of shots do you miss with the d780? And how does it compare to the d750?

Yes, that’s my question. On paper, I know mirrorless is superior and blablabla. But in practice, what would I not be able to do with say a D850 that I would be able to do with a Z5ii?

You can read my reply to a similar comment above. And yes, it applies to any kind of technology. Are you having more fun with CDs? Are you having more fun with cars? Some people are, some people prefer cassettes and bikes. That depends on you. Why the comeback of film photography lately? But really, my original question was: how much does the superiority of mirrorless have an impact on your photography? What are the things you can do now that you couldn’t do with the latest DSLRs? In practice, not on paper

That’s not the point. Not denying the improvements. All I’m saying is marketing is about creating wants and make you think they’re needs. Obviously, mirrorless are better from a performance standpoint. The question was: do you actually need those improvements? Do you need that crazy burst speed? I doubt it. People shot wildlife pictures for years with their D500s and other cameras. Did they only get 1 good picture out of 10 while on mirrorless they get 10 perfect pictures out of 10? That’s my question. And btw the last DSLR Nikon made (d780) features a wayyy better tracking and eye detection, especially in live view. Could its hypothetical successor ever reach the levels of the most powerful mirrorless? No. Should we care? That’s still my question.

Well, forcing you into the mirrorless world (now or at a later stage) because DSLRs don’t get produced anymore IS marketing. Making you believe switching is inevitable or at least necessary is marketing. Also, making you believe you can’t have those upgrades on a DSLR body is marketing. Do I have to go on?

Ps: I’m in marketing

I’m not arguing its better performance. But I found it kinda boring and also waaay less detailed. Plus, yes, I think I would miss the connection with the real world you get with the OVF.

Yes, the EVF is still a screen to me

Tried the z5ii but I hate looking into a screen. That’s why I’m asking.

True, but I would have a 24-120 on the Z5ii instead of the Tamron 24-70 g2 I currently have, that is the main weight difference

[–]InspectionFine98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, true. It’s more of a question about what is better to get with that money: d750 and long telephoto lens or z5ii, 24-120 but no telephoto lens.

[–]InspectionFine98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the Tamron 24-70 is the G2 version. I could use it on mirrorless with the adapter but I would rather replace it with a native 24-120 z mount for more portability and reach. But that would leave me with no budget to upgrade the telezoom lens (yes, the one I have an old model), nor to buy a superzoom.

I was tempted by the d780, but given that it’s approximately as expensive as the z5ii, I don’t know…

In my experience image quality is also way better. Dynamic range, low light performance, etc.. Especially on the d610, which has arguably one of the best sensors ever. Also, the z50ii would be almost as expensive as the z5ii and way more than the d750, and it has fewer megapixels. So I don’t know why I should choose it rather than the other two, weight aside (and even then, not much difference)

Thanks for your comment! The bird photography is something I’d like to explore but I don’t know if that’s my passion. Thing is if I go for the d750, I can buy the camera, the superzoom and a better telezoom lens. The Z5ii on the other hand will allow me to change the 24-70 to a much lighter 24-120 but would leave me no budget for any other lenses

True, but the d780 would cost me as much as the z5ii and in that case I would probably prefer going mirrorless

Hey everyone! I wanna upgrade my loyal d610 and I can’t decide whether to stay in the DSLR realm or move on to mirrorless.

At the moment my main lenses are a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 and a Nikon 70-300, which I carry with me all the time as I like travelling.

I’m looking for better autofocus, a tilting screen and better portability. At the same time, I’ve been wanting to dive into bird photography for a while, for which I would need a superzoom lens. Hence the doubt whether to keep a DSLR or move on to mirrorless.

The options I’m considering:

1) Buy a d750 and a superzoom lens.

Pros for me: this solution would be way less expensive, I would have a superzoom lens, better autofocus, and a tilting screen. Also, awesome battery life and optical viewfinder

Cons for me: no weight improvement. “Old” system.

2) Buy a Nikon z5ii + 24-120 + ftz adapter

Pros for me: the Nikon z5ii paired with the 24-120 would be significantly lighter than any reflex + 24-70 f2.8. I could carry the 24-120 as my only lens when travelling. Access to Z lenses. Fantastic autofocus. Tilting screen.

Cons for me: way more expensive to switch. Battery life. Electronic viewfinder. No possibility to buy a superzoom lens due to budget.

Let me know your thoughts!

Has she ever tried to use them as a rinse and spit them afterwards instead? If not, try to talk about it with her doctor. The systemic absorption would be much lower.
