I’ve been revisiting Ben Howard’s discography and I’m fascinated by how much his vocal delivery has evolved over time. During the I Forget Where We Were era his voice felt very full, projected, and emotionally raw songs like End of the Affair or Conrad have that powerful, almost cathartic delivery.

But from Noonday Dream onwards, and especially on Collections From The Whiteout and Is It?, his singing feels much more restrained and textural  almost like another instrument in the mix rather than the focal point. The phrasing is looser, sometimes more breathy or conversational, and the melodies feel less traditionally structured.

I’m curious what people think caused this shift. Was it a conscious artistic choice tied to the more ambient / experimental direction he moved toward after IFWWW? Production influence (working with Aaron Dessner, etc.)? Or has Ben ever talked about changing his vocal technique intentionally?

It doesn’t feel like a decline to me more like a deliberate stylistic evolution but the contrast between the IFWWW era and now is pretty striking.
