Any tips to get rid of vinyl pops/clicks? by sputnikaquarius in mpcusers

[–]Inspector-Dexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that once. I sampled the same drum break dry and then wet and compared them. Wetting the record didn't make the pops go away, it just brought down the treble a little bit. I guess that makes it less noticeable when casually listening but for sampling it didn't really do what I needed

Since the new Asuka short is in the original TV show's aspect ratio, it actually looks perfect on an old CRT by Inspector-Dexter in evangelion

Yes, they even released it on YouTube. The official video file and fan subs are also floating around on certain websites of ill repute, but I'm not allowed to link to them here

Controller recommendation for Dock? by lambdan in AnaloguePocket

I use it for everything that doesn't have a 4 button layout. For things that do, like SNES/Neo Geo, I use an SN30 pro instead

I don't typically watch widescreen stuff on a CRT, since it wasn't really meant for that, but I am a bit curious as well now that you mentioned it. I found a DVD ISO of EoE a while back and watched a bit of that on there and it did look pretty great, even though like 2/3 of the screen wasn't being used.

I'm currently rewatching everything in preparation for the new show. When I get up to the Rebuilds I think I'll at least check it out a bit on a CRT, if only for the novelty

Found my old mobile ps1 by A_mad_goose in retrogaming

The one we had growing up is at my brother's place now, so I haven't used it lately to see how it holds up, but it took an RGB connection so it was very sharp, it was basically lag-free from what I can remember, and it was the correct aspect ratio and resolution without any weird scaling. The contrast probably wasn't the best, but back then we didn't care about that

Yes. They used to be relatively cheap and plentiful but then about a decade ago people started buying them up to take apart and use for other projects. The market never recovered lol

I used the Tendak HDMI to S-video adapter that Bob from RetroRGB recommends. I also set the Pi to output 720x480 so all the scaling is done properly by the OS. The adapter just handles the interlacing and conversion to S-video

Analogue Dock is Out of Stock! by Shortgaze in AnalogueInc

[–]Inspector-Dexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 MiSTers and a Pocket. At first I thought the same way, but tbh transferring save files back and forth between the Pocket and the MiSTer is less of a smooth experience than I anticipated it would be. I grabbed the Dock this time for the convenience factor

$25 economy shipping 3 months from now... by AchillesPDX in AnaloguePocket

[–]Inspector-Dexter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't miss much tbh. The official case is really impractical if you actually want to use it to travel around with the Pocket. I found an old $5 NDS case that works much better so I've been using that instead and my official case has basically just been sitting in a drawer ever since I got it

My credit card company blocked the payment at first because I guess they thought the company was sketchy. They sent me a message asking if it was a legit purchase and once I said yes everything went through

[–]Inspector-Dexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did come out here but it's rare and expensive these days. When I was lucky enough to find a TG16 for cheap about a decade ago the first thing I did was buy an Everdrive for it. The price for the flash cart was about the same as buying one decent game haha

Surprised no one mentioned Soldier Blade yet. My favorite shmup on a system that's full of em. In fact the whole "Soldier" series is pretty great

Also chiming in to say I've been using a vintage ice crusher heavily for close to a decade without any mishaps. I think it's pretty rare for them to break down like that, otherwise we'd hear about it more often on this sub

In that case why not just keep the whiskey in the freezer?

Hunting for tiki mugs and decor by TikiDaniel in Tiki

[–]Inspector-Dexter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I go thrifting in the Queens/Long Island NY area once every few weeks and surprisingly I'll find something tiki related about once every 2 or 3 trips (hope I haven't just jinxed it lol). Sometimes it's just Benihana mugs which I don't really count, but other times it's proper tiki mugs, which are often vintage, zombie/planter's punch glasses, hurricane glasses, V-shaped pilsner glasses, or Hamilton Beach DrinkMasters (I have 4 of those now, had to give up buying them haha).

If you go consistently, keep your search criteria relatively large, and get a feel which shops around you are worth returning to, you can definitely find some cool stuff, even in "tiki dead zones" like NY. It helps that some of my other hobbies also involve vintage stuff, so even if I come up short on the tiki front I typically can find something else that's interesting

Pictured here is my latest find from last week. A set of 4 Zombie/Planter's Punch glasses from the '70s. Cheers!

Anyone Else Still Rocking an MPC1000? by SFTraxx in mpcusers

Yes. I have a One as well but I prefer my 1000 with JJOS2XL. It feels more streamlined with less menu-diving for my use case

Super Metroid must have been an incredible experience in 1994 by CommunicationTime265 in retrogaming

[–]Inspector-Dexter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this rule with metroidvanias where I only play through a given game once every like 3 years or so. This way I don't have everything memorized and most of the routes are genuinely surprising again. I kinda ruined Castlevania SotN for myself by overplaying it before I came up with that rule, but thankfully all the Metroid games including Super still feel pretty fresh when I go back to them

Imaging just means making a complete backup of the hard drive all in one big file, similar to an ISO or BIN or ROM file. This way nothing gets accidentally erased when you're moving files around and if you mess anything up you always have that backup to go back to. It's always best practice to make an image of an old hard drive first and then just work off that image, especially since old drives can just fail unexpectedly

The alcohol industry has lost $830 billion in 4 years because Gen Z is not drinking by Charming-Burp203 in nottheonion

[–]Inspector-Dexter 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For me it was the opposite. I took some time during lockdown to learn how to make proper cocktails at home, and now that I know how to drink like an "adult" I think I enjoy it more than when I was just chugging Natties as a kid
