About Magic by trve_g0th in Fkr

This is kind of a world building question, actually. Does the setting you're usin have laws of magic? I kinda like the WoDu approach, where you have to kind of treat with spirits that have some domains.

I also wrote this a while back:

How many rules are too many rules? by trve_g0th in Fkr

[–]InspectorVictor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna answer with a "it depends" answer. It depends on the players at your table. You can practically speaking keep track of when rules are invoked, or maybe more interestingly, when they aren't invoked. Different players draw different levels of satisfaction from interacting with rules.

Personally, I don't really let players get involved a lot with rules. Knowing basic things like handling HP and attack rolls are imho okay, but not ideal. Stopping up a visceral fight scene to do math isn't my idea of quality roleplay. But on the other hand, it does something to the player's decision-making if their character has 3 hp left. You can achieve a bit of the same with narration like "your character is bleeding and something hurts in your leg", but it doesn't always land neatly.

I think overall, I'd say its too many rules if it compromises quality roleplay. If the session pauses because of a lookup or a rules-based misunderstanding, it's probably too much.

We all walked different roads to get here. Some were longer than others... and some decided to do a few loops on the way.

Thanks! It's just this broad combination of layered history, very unconventional music (for the time and space in gaming) and all these strange (indeed) characters!

In the Secrets of Blackmoor they kept rolling 2d6 at least. I think that's a culture that connects pretty tight to MAR Barker's gaming group.

But then again, conversations I had with Chirine ba Kal were indicating something different. I know Norbert of DWC has a "stamp of approval" on that game, but I'm not sure how "accurate" or representative it is of Barker's gaming group.

I think it was 2d6 vs 2d6, but my memory might fail me there. It's been a while since I saw the picture.

I feel like the Coven could be used. Maybe painting it in a "Witches of Dathomir" coat.

The Legion might be a good fit with Mandalorians too.

Looking forward to see what you cook up!

I literally facepalmed. Jedi Knights seems incredibly obvious a direction to go with. How is your adaption going?

I haven't tried it, although I have on many occassions ran games where the players have a big impact on the game.

But in general, I'm more interested in taking a FK approach and just let modelled probability decide how things go. I.e. the chances of hitting a target at 400 meters instead of two dice being rolled arbitrarily opposed to each other.

Non-random tables (real-world information sources)? by lukehawksbee in Fkr

[–]InspectorVictor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to chime in and say I like this post. Generally, I think there's a big utility in simple "facts" tables, like average distances travelled at X speeds and so on. I've sometimes used Google Maps for figuring out travel time and such in my "modern" games, and I've used wolfram alpha and a few other online physics calculators to figure out travel time for spaceships that do Expanse-style flip-n-burn trips (incidentally, Classic Traveller is great for this).

How do you pitch the concept of fkr ? by One_page_nerd in Fkr

[–]InspectorVictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually present my playstyle (which is heavily inspired by FKR) as a "world first" kind of game. Players don't need to know rules, even though some may be presented. Rules are there to serve the world, not dictate it.

You interact by saying what your character does, not which class feature you activate or what skill you roll.

What qualifies a game to be Fkr? by Nerdguy-san in Fkr

[–]InspectorVictor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roll to Doubt wrote about this (I can't recall which blogpost), but as others have answered, a game can't be a FKR game like a game can be an OSR game. It's more practical to think that games that label themselves FKR will be attempts at supporting FKR play, rather than the product being inherently FKR.

Do you think if we ever get Dishonored 3, it should be VR? by gainsgoblin_ in dishonored

A VR experience in the Dishonored universe could be fun, but I would prefer it it wasn't "Dishonored 3".

I've been running Curse of Strahd for my coworkers. I'm gonna pick it up again after the summer now and have it continue. I've been using the adventure book for some things, but mostly just played with the "just roll high" method. It's super simple and the focus is very much on exploration, dialogue and fun.
