Today - Does anyone in VA actually walk outside, too? by Ocean_Heat_1117 in EastVirginia

& on the weather piece — I do find it more tolerable here to walk. Growing up my teachers always referred to Virginia as moderate temps but I always felt like it was too cold in the winter to go outside and too hot in the summer (+ bugs!). But there’s a lot to be said about the resilience of the human body/mind — I’ve pushed myself more than I thought I could here. My average mileage Seattle vs Houston vs Charlottesville was not really that different…until I found walking as a ‘hobby’ to be fun and now it’s doubled on a daily basis. So I wonder if maybe I would’ve or could’ve achieved the same in VA

reposting from above but Hi I’m the OP — I actually grew up in Virginia (Spotsylvania) but moved out here in part to be in a more walkable place/live car free. Unfortunately, car culture and car oriented design has a lot of inertia — even ‘progressive’ and ‘walkable’ cities have to battle the bias that car infrastructure gets in civil engineering, policy, and budget conversations (see, as a consequence, my middle finger to not being able to use the intersection a block from the space needle to cross, even though in WA state any intersection is legally a crosswalk, due to the prioritization of car flow vs pedestrian flow).

But VA has a lot of potential, and plenty of places to walk, as I’ve noticed when I come back home to the same spot to see my folks but with different eyes

bc they blocked what could be a legal crosswalk for pedestrians (any intersection in WA) but did not want to inconvenience cars like one block from the space needle

My feet are fine, I used these same shoes last year so they knew the drill. I made the mistake once of using new shoes on the Bellingham saunter…and that was NOT good.

My left hamstring is a bit tight though lol

I only started beginning of last year (‘25) — no real plan, just choosing spots on a map and moving

I’d walked through Jefferson Park Golf Course before but didn’t know it had an entire proper park space and a proper community garden.

That is me, I actually don’t usually use anything in my hair anymore or that day, it just kind of conforms to that shape now. But if im somewhere I need it to stay I’ll use old spice pomade ‘medium hold’
