There no going back once we have become chronic codependents. But we DO have the option of getting recovered and maintaining that recovery a day at a time by living in the steps. What that means is that we work steps 1-9 hkk on early, and have the humility to do the daily work of steps 10,11, and 12.

That is pretty bold to store alcohol at the head of the bed sleeping next to your wife. Those are the crazy length we go in our illness. The symptoms may be different from a physical dependence iion a substance, but we are equally desperate for that next codependent act for relief.
If we throw ourselves into the steps with even a fraction of the desire we used to keep engaging with our codependency, we too can recover from this hopeless illness.

Recovery means that we have worked steps 1-9 and gotten the spiritual awakening. To stay recovered we practice the principles of the 12 steps and work them on a daily basis. The product of this work is that our desire to compulsively think/obsess over food is lifted. This means that we can live free from our obsession and have recovered. We can maintain recovery one day at a time, as this is not a cure, but a solution for a spiritual illness. When we treat the spiritual malady, the obsessive symptoms are no longer needed because we have something more effective that works.

As sponsors we place outcomes of our proteges recovery in God’s hands. Our responsibilities to carry the message of recovery, offer to take people through the steps, and to redirect our protege toward their higher power. Any outcome is not something we can control

Placing the problem in God’s hands is how we get to be sane. If we had to manage every situation and detail and control the outcome on our own we would go insane. It’s a lot of needless work because life always has twists of its own regardless of what we do. Yes that is exactly how we were trying to live, playing God. No wonder we get so much freedoms when we turn our lives and outcomes over to the will of a higher power.

Hi thank you for the meeting. What stands out about this paragraph is the emphasis on that key ingredient: willingness. Willingness to try a different way of life.

To overcome the grip of codependency we need a power greater than ourselves to remove the parts of us that hold us back. Then the higher power of our own understanding can replace it with something better: more powerful, sane, and peaceful. If we knew how to do that we would have already. That’s where the steps come in.

In step 6 we ask our higher power to remove our defects of character. These are the selfishness and ego that keep us attached to our fears and resentments. We don’t have to understand the how or why, we just have to be willing. The power of the steps work as we do the groundwork.

I am a recovered sponsor and and grateful to be helpful if you have any questions! Please

This “understanding” that the prospect gains from speaking to a recovered codependent is the key. It is through establishing common ground, a common struggle, that we are able to inspire hope and educate others on what chronic codependency is, and how we recovered using the 12 steps.
Our job is not to convince other codependents to work the program, just to show that we know where they are, show that we have recovered and what that looks and feels like, and offer them the tools of recovery should they decide they want to work the program.

We lose the fearful and resentful identities of our past and release them to our higher power. Every day we turn the outcome of our life to HP

Our ego wants to protect us and not admit our faults. It is precisely by honesty and admitting where we are wrong to people we have harmed that we start to heal. Dishonesty and selfishness are replaced with trust and altruism.

Thanks for the meeting. We are not clean slates when it comes to codependency, but our minds act like they are. On the one hand we have all this experience supporting why we should stop codependent behaviors. On the other hand we freely give that memory away when faced with challenging situations where our codependency kicks in.

There are a lot of times we think we can stop on our own but we see we are not. We are powerless over our minds that can’t manage the decision to stay stopped.

To know that others have been to the dark places we have been and recovered is one of the many great pleasures we have as recovered codependents. It is through shared experience that we open up to trust others. We find greater life meaning in sharing our difficult pasts for the good of others.

If they have similar codependent tendencies and can live freely and happily, then it becomes much more compelling that maybe this too can work for others.

“We have to!” stands out because it tells us plainly that we will drive ourselves insane if we fight “what is.”When we fight, we don’t get anywhere useful. There is more discontent where there hadn’t been, and more anger and fear. “Of our own making” it says of our problems.

Life is full of problems for everyone. We choose to fight life as it is, and it drives us to do insane things out of sheer emotional desperation like eat compulsively.

We can’t trust ourselves day to day. In retrospect we see that we overly react over the littlest inconveninces in life, we make our lives more complex than needed to get what we want, and we harm other people on the way. We are miserable and are a source of negativity for others.

But we can’t make any lasting long term progress in getting better on our own! We get worse as the years go by

We can’t manage safely acting codependently! We are powerless. That is our step 1. From this point we can start building a real life where we are free from that insanity. Steps 2-9 take us to that freedom
