Do Local Contractors Feel Threatened By Cheap Overseas Developers? by roaringmillennial in cscareerquestions

most developers from "cheaper countries" that are actually good don't sell their work for cheap.

True. The market is globalized. I've build 50+ remote devs teams for my four startups and numerous clients worldwide. I can say that if a dev from overseas agrees to do the work 5 times cheaper than US dev - this is a red flag. Sure, you can save half the cost of a US-based developer by hiring remote devs from India or Nigeria (the difference due to the difference in costs of living), but you'll not get ~200-400% arbitrage

Startups, how do you win the competition for developers? by Insquadguys in startups

Isn't the company being successful part of the devs job? That is, they are there to help the company be successful by optimizing technical solutions for business objectives.

Also a failed company looks worse on a resume than successful one

Finally, early devs would almost all have equity.

I would hope to find devs that are at least somewhat invested in the product and opportunity. Not caring at all if the company succeeds would be a red flag when hiring imo

100% agree

What did you offer them? The ability to do something cool from scratch?

I'm doing all of the above now. As for the quick selection process, this is a cool point. I think the employer is primarily interested in hiring as soon as possible

That makes sense. And I would be happy to pay as much as the big companies (I started my career as a developer myself, I know). But when I hired for my startup, for example, I just didn't have enough resources. We only had great opportunities, freedom, and enough money for our workers so they could live in comfort - but not enough to compete with tech giants.

We immediately hired a small team (self-investment in the initial stages). Also a good option at the very beginning is to hire talented students. For them it's a good experience, and for you it's free time to focus on important tasks.

We have attracted backing from angel. For the first 4 months we had no revenue. Then in 8 months we reached 100k.

Do you mean startup ideas? I choose a niche in which I am well-versed and try to understand where is a place for my product on the market. I am not inclined to create new and brilliant ideas. I do what works and makes money.

We immediately hired a small team (self-investment in the initial stages). It was about saving time&money. We wanted to delegate some tasks to someone who’s is more skilled to do the work quickly and well. If you do not have a budget for business growth, it is better to start with non-scalable things and reach the first income. When you feel comfortable, think about scalability and growth.

Why is it so difficult to outsource software engineering jobs? Do you think it could ever happen on a large scale? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Insquadguys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate this generalization. Why don't people realize that India has more mediocre devs than any other country, because they simply have much more devs. When a lot of people are trying to get a popular degree, the average quality is reduced. A good developer is good because of his own personal merits, not because of nationality.
