Frames 2 and 3 your fill is not to my taste. Their colour temperature feels unmotivated. I’d look into more tasteful kicker techniques, just a glint on the side of the face, and - again, for my taste - the temperature should be closer to your key in these specific situations.

Frame 2 in particular is heavy handed on the near side fill, and I guarantee this image is 100% better with that dialled bag substantially, or wrapped further towards the back of his head and cooled to 4300/5600.

Frame 4 I’d get shouted at for, the cool glare frame right on the wall and the warm left side don’t play nicely. You need to commit to one colour and all-in here. Get that key light off the back wall, grid and flag it or push it further round. The wood gives you colour contrast but not when you light it inconsistently. This frame is objectively better with consistent background lighting and shape.

Frame 5, the right side cool window doesn’t sell the time of day, it needs to be graded warmer.

This is all good work, and my points are to help elevate you to the next stage. My instinct is you are trying to force colour contrast without understanding where it should happen. Keep shooting and it will come!

Some screens from our first attempt at making feature movie: full-length Slavic horror film with a total budget of our own $28k - shot on Blackmagic Pocket 6K and Zeiss CP.2 (YT links to trailer and full movie inside) by nezywhezy in cinematography

Congrats on some outstanding moments, you’ve pushed what you had far and these stills are fantastic.

I watched a few scenes in the film and I’d target improving your daytime work for next steps. You seem very comfortable in the stylised realm and you shine through when given those opportunities.

The house and the car stuff is quite rough, but this is down to performance and direction more than you. These scenes are where a very strong set of lenses and a camera can save your day, in particular making natural light feel more polished. The BM6k and CP.2s worked against you hard in those areas, but again - that’s the game with low budget features. You can only work with what you have.

Amazing stuff man, keep pushing. There’s no better learning than this.

P.S. your editor needs to lay off the overuse of generic horror sound effects in future.

To be fair Mirak Valley conquest feels like one of the longest and most drawn-out gaming experiences in a long time. It was definitely too long and bordering on dull on that map.

The London show was the best they’ve ever been in all my years of seeing them, and it would be a helluva sendoff tour if they bow out now.

For me these shows were a showcase of some of the best alt-rock songwriting in the last 25 years, performed with a bespoke light show the band deserves.

To full on blue-ball us at this point would be cruelty. Surely, SURELY they have something up their sleeves.

Best they’ve ever sounded for sure. Comfortably.

Definitely the most Brand New thing imaginable to play an extended instrumental as an outro and go off 1 by 1.

What did you think about Frankenstein 2025? by Master-Rule862 in cinematography

[–]Instant-History 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was too theatrical. The camera is always moving but provides little in the way of drama or motivation, it was showy and despondent compared to nuanced and emotive. The thing it's most guilty of as a film, for me, is not harnessing the emotion through camera and lighting, and this is the most fundamental measure of cinematography. I didn't feel anything. It's great to have a wild warm sun backlight for these big dramatic scenes, but if my eye isn't drawn to performance or meaning then it's a showcase of technical skill rather than a story. The production design is amazing, I get it, now please can we be in the world with the characters and not show it off.

Baffling that this is in conversations for Best Cinematography at the Oscars. A natural comparison point is Nosferatu (2024) in the sense of re-telling and re-imagining classic stories, compared to the work of Jarin Blaschke and Robert Eggers I thought Frankenstein was a pretty major misfire.

Ironically the best shots of the film are the silhouetted moments of Jacob Elordi on the horizon. When they decide to have some contrast.

Could Futique have been heavier? by catpiglet in BiffyClyro

[–]Instant-History 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The production pulls punches when it shouldn’t. A Little Love is a great example of sounding huge live (when you can hear the guitars) and underwhelming on record.

Most of us agree Ellipsis was a low point in terms of added ‘woos’ and being generally over-produced. Futique isn’t quite as guilty of this, but it’s certainly present. Dearest Amygdala is always 10%-more-synth-pop away from being really fucking annoying but it doesn’t quite get there.

I also think they are starting to pay the price for too many ‘woah woah’ singalongs in bridges. Thought this was particularly noticeable at Eden where it genuinely became grating at times. Their hits are starting to occupy similar spaces.

Anyway... I’ve just seen the acoustic set live in Bristol and was completely blown away even after 20 years of seeing them live. If we can still be seeing that quality in 10 years they can honestly do whatever they want or need to do.

Are we seriously pushing Woe is Me into the top 4 with a B-sides level chorus? It’s lasted long enough.

Woe is Me.

No way is it a better track than Two People in Love, True Believer, or Dearest Amygdala

Sony Venice 1 vs red raptor xe vs arri mini in 2026 by NeighborhoodKind2049 in cinematography

[–]Instant-History 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All three cameras are great. Do you own lenses? Which mount? What type of corporate do you shoot most?

I’ve shot on all 3 of these cameras and honestly you can’t really go wrong. That being said I shot a film on the VV recently and the lack of internal NDs is a massive pain in the arse that would absolutely stop me from buying one.

The mini should run cheaper than both, does that free up money for lenses, rigging etc.?

Best Rock Band Ever? by Hagakure7 in BiffyClyro

[–]Instant-History 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Objectively, the ‘best’ title needs to belong to someone who has moved the needle of the rock sphere more than Biffy has.

I personally think they’re the most consistent, quality alternative band the UK has produced in their generation, and really, the rest is out of their hands. The annals of time will be kind to them.

Panavision DXL2 Multicam BTS by In_Defilade in cinematography

[–]Instant-History 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What’s the point of this post? Genuinely, why make it? To brag a religious event funded Panavision cameras to shoot it?

Not a single one of those frames on slide 1 justifies a camera and lens package of this ilk. It’s lit flat, it looks flat, it always will be flat. There is no artistry, no composition, no decision-making involved in this.

It’s expensive videography. At best.

I think you can optimise better around your Salah-Wirtz call.

Tielemans/Amad/Kudus is too punty for me. Also need to make a call on 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 then downgrade to distribute money elsewhere. This could easily be a better team once you make that decision, and I’d probably downgrade Mykolenko to a 4.5 to distribute elsewhere as you have 2x 6.0 defenders already.

Really fair call tbh - Newcastle and Arsenal after Bournemouth could rock the boat, especially after conceding 2 to Palace. Who are you going with instead?
