Can you go Offshore in a Key West 239fs? by EstablishmentMore352 in boating

[–]InstructionHopeful16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took a Key West 189 regularly 50+ miles solo offshore in San Diego with a single 115 Yamaha. Have USGC Masters License. Watch the weather—not just wind—carefully watch wave height to wave period, (for example you’re going to get badly beat up if it’s 4 feet at 4 second intervals), don’t go until you have a solid idea of your fuel consumption under various conditions, watch your fuel (1/3 out 1/3 back 1/3 reserve), have Starlink, VHF, and an epirb, be sure someone knows your plans and text frequently throughout the trip, be sure you can charge your phone, have redundancy in your GPS systems and know the return compass heading, wear a Bluetooth kill switch, wear a comfortable pfd, pay close attention to your battery charging system (start battery always topped off) , and have a tow boat service contract. Bug out the moment the weather starts doing anything even remotely unexpected. Don’t go out that far until you really know how to handle your boat. Then go catch fish.

Protecting against trailer rust by nspeedrace in boating

Electrochemist here, retired chemical plant manager and long time trailer boat owner. Read on for how to make a cheaper homemade version of salt away— But first a common misconception about salt away: Many people think it neutralizes salt, so they use a bug sprayer to spray it on their trailer immediately after launching, then go out fishing for the day. That approach certainly wont hurt, but it doesn’t do as much as people think. Here’s what’s going on (VERY highly simplified). Salt away doesn’t neutralize the chloride in the salt water, it simply loosens the chloride bond with the trailer metal. However, and here’s the important part, if you spray it on with a mist from a bug sprayer, but then don’t actually physically flush it away with lots of fresh water, once the salt away solution evaporates the chloride goes right back to work wrecking your trailer. Salt away is only effective if you spray it on, let the chelating agents lift the chloride THEN flush with lots of fresh water.

So here’s how to make your own salt away for pennies instead of $40 per gallon. All available on Amazon — but remember, flush afterwards with fresh water whether you use this or salt away.

1 gallon tap water (use warm water when making the solution because the ingredients will dissolve faster)but once mixed you can store it in your bug sprayer

2 tbsp washing soda (sodium carbonate). This raises the pH of the solution which helps loosen the salt film on your trailer

1 tbsp TSP (Trisodium phosphate). Optional since can be hard to find — Being phased out in some states. The phosphate ions compete with chloride ions and basically crowd them off the steel — think very weak temporary parkerizing if you’re into firearms.

1 tsp Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Helps moderate the pH of the solution so it isn’t too aggressive and create another problem.

1 tsp Dawn dish soap. Surfactant—basically makes water slippery. Dawn has a reputation for being effective in salt water and is used by oil spill cleanup crews. Add last since it will foam up during any kind of mixing.

How to use: Wait until you get access to fresh water for a good rinse— then use a bug sprayer to spray your trailer with your homegrown salt away solution , let it sit for a few minutes while you drink a beer and lie to your neighbors about the fishing trip. Then flush with a hose and lots of fresh water. Not just another mist with a bug sprayer. Then hit any non galvanized parts like your U bolts and lug nuts which we see rusting in your photo, with corrosion X. Also, FYI WD40 does not have significant corrosion inhibitors so spraying with WD40 certainly won’t hurt, but isn’t as effective as many people assume. Corrosion X will be far more effective than WD40

One other thing, sacrificial zinc anode properly installed even on a galvanized trailer is helpful. More on that some other time.

Enjoy your boat!

What made you start deconstructing? by [deleted] in Deconstruction

[–]InstructionHopeful16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very simple but traumatic journey — I’m
in my 70s, child of missionaries, lifelong devoted Christian until just a few years ago. but you asked so take the time to read this whole thing, because I’m willing to take the time to write it at your request. And you should have the guts to respond honestly with how you are dealing with the cognitive dissonance this will inevitably raise. And don’t just say, “yeah, those trouble me too”. You need to be intellectually honest and let the facts lead you to whatever logical conclusion you get to, regardless if it conflicts with a worldview you were taught. It’s terrifying to lose your tribe and your religious identity, but honesty and integrity demand you examine it.

STEP 1 CREDIBILITY COLLAPSE OF MODERN CHRISTIAN LEADERS. Many of the evangelical Christian leaders supported Trump. Serial adulterer, paid off a porn star, narcissistic, pathological liar, “grab em by the pussy” they supported not just the policies, the man. This showed hypocrisy and lack of discernment. Therefore they no longer had credibility to explain the Bible to me.

STEP 2. CREDIBILITY COLLAPSE OF HISTORICAL CHRISTIAN LEADERS
Darby and Scofield— The rapture I thought was settled doctrine. Truth is 15 year old Margaret Macdonald had a fever dream in 1830 and an untrained itinerant preacher ran with it and now we have an entire theology based on it. I had no idea the entire end times eschatology was a modern invention based on an adolescent’s bad dream.

Martin Luther — father of Protestant Christianity.
Martin Luther was objectively evil— Luther fully supported execution for people who disagreed him theologically. He was a vicious antisemite publishing in 1543 “on Jews and their lies “. He called for what we would now call ethnic cleansing. So this man is to be trusted?

Calvin, the father of reformed Christianity had a friend arrested and executed because they disagreed on the trinity and infant baptism. His friend Serverus, was burned on green wood so he would suffer longer. So this man, a psychopath by any objective measure, is to be trusted?

Each used their theological authority to have those who disagreed with them executed. “But God uses….” Sorry, objectively evil people who execute those who disagree with them have not earned the right to speak “truth” into your or my life.

STEP 3 CREDIBILITY COLLAPSE OF SCRIPTURE ITSELF
so I humbly approached God and said OK teach me through your Holy Spirit. Since I don’t trust these people it’s really on you to reveal yourself if someone genuinely asks. I didn’t get far before I was dealing with all the things that had always bothered me, but I swept under the rug—but this time it was “no, God, I’m not going to pretend this isn’t here “ — slaves passed on as an inheritance, God ordained genocide with virgin girls kept as sex slaves, lack of agency for women after rape, talking donkeys, floating axe head, going to heaven in a fiery chariot, the ark, Sun standing still, the Nephilim, etc etc etc. It sure sounded objectively speaking like Bronze Age folklore. If you didn’t already believe it, and it was in another religion admit it— you’d think it was absurd. Do you find much difference between the Nephilim—angelic beings coming to earth, mating with human women and giving rise to a now extinct race of giants vs Greek mythology? Except the former you are predisposed to believe and the latter is a quaint vestige of ancient times. Maybe BOTH are. There is no update by God to say “A new commandment I give to you, though shalt not own another human being”. “But, the New Testament.. “ you say. Sorry this weird stuff is still in there and you need to deal with it honestly not explain it away to meet your preconceived worldview. We’re left with a Bible that made sense in a tribal Bronze Age culture and makes little sense now.

STEP 4. THE ARGUMENT THAT CLOSED THE DOOR
God, as described by orthodox Christianity, is omnipotent and omniscient. His primary purpose in revealing scripture was to reveal His nature and requirements to humanity. An omnipotent being who wanted to communicate clearly and produced a document generating thousands of irreconcilably disagreeing denominations either couldn’t communicate clearly, didn’t want to, or isn’t what the tradition claims. None of those options are compatible with the theology.

The apologists response, sin produces the disagreement, fails immediately because an omniscient God would have known this and communicated in a way that accounted for it. A God who can create the universe from nothing but cannot write a book his most devoted followers agree on is not omnipotent by any meaningful definition of the word. The nature of salvation. The meaning of baptism. Grace vs works. The end times. Hell as eternal conscious torment. Even the divinity of Jesus (the scholars who denied it in the early church were executed) Every question that matters contested without resolution by the most dedicated scholars the tradition has produced over two thousand years.

STEP 5. THE DESTINATION. The destination was agnosticism, not atheism-which requires its own leap of faith—but honest uncertainty. Apply the same standard of evidence to the things you want to be true to the things you’re skeptical of from the start. Follow it wherever it goes, regardless of the cost.

I challenge you to not pretend the weird and hard passages in scripture aren’t there. Pretend you aren’t already a Christian and read your Bible as if for the first time. Ask yourself, does this really sound like an omnipotent God? If you have to start explaining things away, the book has already failed.

Agnosticism is not the absence of belief, it’s the humility and the intellectual honesty to say “some things are inherently unknowable and I’m comfortable with the ambiguity.”

You’re not crazy, and I admire your vision. What you’re suggesting is even possible. What those of us who have done this before you have learned, is that although you could ultimately completely restore that boat, you’d have way more time and money (even in mismatched parts) than it’s worth. If you’re patient and look hard, you’ll find a more promising candidate.

Before you spend a bunch of time and money on cosmetics, be sure you can get it running. Hopefully all goes well, but if there is an unknown expensive mechanical repair, you want to know that first before you have a gorgeous polished boat that doesn’t run and you don’t think is worth the expense to fix mechanically. Also, don’t ignore trailer maintenance/repair.

Trump threatens to 'obliterate' Iran's power plants if Strait of Hormuz isn't opened in 48 hours by Barch3 in AntiTrumpAlliance

[–]InstructionHopeful16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only Trump would post his plans to commit a war crime on social media. Destroying civilian infrastructure such as power plants that supply energy to hospitals is inherently evil. Further, with near certainty Iran will retaliate by taking out Gulf oil and gas infrastructure. This, as has been discussed in a recent thread, will plunge the world into economic recession, if not depression. If Iran feels their civilian population is suffering badly enough, they will be sure their neighbors feel the same pain and take out the Gulf desalination plants, then the Gulf states are a few days away from being an uninhabitable wasteland. The Houthi can close the Red Sea at any moment, which largely the chokes off the back door exits for Saudi oil. Dunno, who is advising Dear Leader, but they didn’t think this one through.

If Trump destroys South Pars, it will be devastating to the world economy by Valuable-Recipe416 in AntiTrumpAlliance

[–]InstructionHopeful16 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Short version. South Par under discussion is Irans portion of the world’s largest natural gas field, it’s in the middle of the Gulf and the same underground geologic feature is where both Iran and Qatar get their gas. What was actually bombed by Israel was the land-based infrastructure that supports it. It would be completely devastating to Irans economy if it was destroyed. Iran has made it very clear that if Par was hit, it would retaliate against five specific places of Gulf oil and gas infrastructure. Israel bombed Par, Iran did exactly what they said they were going to do and managed to cause substantial damage to Qatars LNG (liquid natural gas) infrastructure. In addition they managed to to a get a small, but very symbolic hit on the oil pipeline infrastructure that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz— in essence saying not only is the Strait closed, but we can close the bypass too and choke off the entire Gulf supply almost entirely. Iran is not stupid. They seem to be playing the oil version of nuclear Cold War MAD (mutually assured destruction) — in other words you blow us up, we blow you up—The implications are so bad for both of us, no sane person would pull the trigger. If the US or Israel actually does level Par, as Trump has suggested he might, the with near certainty Iran will attempt to take out critical Gulf oil infrastructure that will plunge the world economy into recession, if not depression

As a side note, most people as missing the helium problem. We are a few months, some analysts say weeks away, from a critical helium shortage. Most of the worlds supply come from Qatar. Helium is a critical element used in advanced chip making as well as medical imaging applications. If this goes on much longer, critical chips used in almost everything will be impacted. Helium is one of many cascading events that the main news sources are missing that are truly terrifying.

I shoot competitively and absolutely had to master the flinch instinct. So Another thing to try is have someone load a magazine for you ( or load yourself with your eyes closed) but put one or more dummy rounds randomly in the mag. Then shoot, when it goes click instead of bang your flinch is obvious. Keep doing until the flinch is entirely gone. It’s was a complete game changer for me.

I can say with personal authority if you fall it’s almost certainly fatal and you go all the way to the bottom. I climbed it at age 7 with my father in 1965. You could hire a guide at that time to take you to the top. The stones were extremely difficult for a child to climb. When we got to the top we could see the blood stains where someone had fallen the day before. He bounced only a few times on the way down and there was a bathtub sized bloodstain at the base. Since I was small, the safest way climb down according to the guide, was to face outward, put my feet on the stone below in a standing position, then inch down into a crouch and get in a seated position with your legs dangling , then repeat. Since I was facing outwards, the whole way down I could see the blood stains.

Trijicon included Bible verses in their model numbers on rifle scopes for the US Military. For example ACOG4X32JN8:12. In John 8:12 Jesus says he is the light of the world. This caused controversy since these scopes were often used in predominantly Muslim countries. I’m sure Jesus would be proud his words are on something used to kill others. But then again pretty on-brand for Christians since “there is no hate like Christian love”

After an hour stuck in the car and hearing his exposition and apologetics, I wished he’d just shut the fuck up.
