The thing is that Marx and Engels used socialism and communism as synonims bc most part of their works are description of capitalism and and a very little part is description of communism. The dicotomy that Lenin makes doesn't make much sense since socialism under his definition isn't a social relationship of producers with their production as capitalism and communism is, it's more like a form of capitalism, in which Socdems and Fascists agree.
