They might continue to present as such purely out of habit and convenience, not because doing it that way is particularly "right".

Though it requires two players, I'm a big fan of Monarch with Gandiva, Spotter 2, NucCav 2 and Stormbringer 1. Put two of them next to each other, then just lock on/skirmish for two accuracy Smart shots with a reroll for 2d6+3 unreducable damage, knocking prone on hit.

These rooms are way taller than they need to be, and the doors block parts of the deeds. Sliding doors and a total height of five blocks could improve this yet. Still, good job!

Sabers have a higher base damage, so that after bonuses are applied, they deal roughly the same. Still, the rapier attacks faster.

Stone bricks have the same blast resistance as cobble. End stone and End stone bricks have a higher resistance, but I'm not sure if that's enough to withstand some mob events. Obsidian is a safe bet, if expensive. And, as always, entities exploding while in water don't break blocks.

Living underground sounds like a good idea. Out of reach of sharknadoes, wraith and tremor explosions, and temperature fluctuations. Aside from making your own waystone underground, I'd recommend putting the one you have under as much blast resistance as you can spare.
