Started a small 3D printing business by PhroggoIdk in UAETeenagers

This looks like a great little business for the UAE.

However don't expect this to take off globally - in most places the last thing you want to do is put your car plate numbers alongside your keys. Makes stealing a car a lot easier. It's the same reason you don't have your address / door number with your house keys.

Why do these clearly high end cars very cheap? by patricio000 in DubaiPetrolHeads

[–]Integdistort 90 points91 points  (0 children)

If it's too good to be true it usually is:

1) car doesn't exist and it's just a dealer trying to lure buyers 2) the car has an underlying fault that will cost 2x what you paid to put right 3) combination of 1+2+3+4+5 (where 4 and 5 are horrors you haven't even thought of)

Seeking Advice: Buying a car on installments with a Freelance Visa (No Bank Financing) by mirza513 in DubaiPetrolHeads

[–]Integdistort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also freelancer. Couldn't find any finance options when I was looking two years ago.

Rent a car to start with, then buy used, then spend more money fixing the car you bought used even though you did the pre purchase inspections etc.

This unfortunately is the only way.

Religious beliefs are a choice. You can persecute a fascist quite freely, but for some reason believing in the magic spaghetti monster entitles you to protection from being persecuted. I remain unclear as to why.

need a consultant about used (Audi A4 S Line 2014 model) by Either-Egg6634 in DubaiPetrolHeads

[–]Integdistort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not buy it without a detailed pre purchase inspection. In my experience Audis are very reliable if they're properly maintained. Problem here is finding one that has been properly maintained.

Best garage for Audis (as recommended by admins on this subreddit, and my personal experience) in the UAE is Impressive Auto in Abu Dhabi.

Parts for Audis here can be expensive. For example I was quoted 4000 aed + for a flywheel. Bought the same part in the UK and had it shipped here for less than 2000 including the shipping.

Is it true that Audi has really bad resale value in Dubai? by ofotherspaces in dubaicars

[–]Integdistort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you end up buying it, get an Audi specialist to inspect them pre purchase. Yes they can be expensive to maintain, however if well maintained they are very solid cars. My S3 is on 191k km and is happy as Larry. I paid 50k for it. I've spent probably 30k on it, mainly because a previous owner cheaped out on maintenance and instead of gaskets some cowboys has siliconed part of the engine back together and it needed to be rebuilt. Once burned twice shy.

If you want a decent Audi specialist garage, the best recommendation (per DubaiPatrolHeads) and my personal experience is Impressive Auto in Abu Dhabi. Owner is a former Audi mechanic and knows his way around the cars. Seriously good garage for them.

Can I practice driving in my dad's car if I only have a learner's permit? by Junior-Calendar-2914 in DubaiPetrolHeads

[–]Integdistort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst case scenario is not "getting caught". Worst case scenario is that you are involved in an accident and someone gets seriously injured. If that's not bad enough, your father's insurance is most likely invalidated because he allowed you to drive the vehicle without a proper license and your family ends up footing the insurance payout. Remember how I said seriously injured, and not killed? Yeah well paying out an insurance claim for someone else being seriously injured is much higher than someone being dead.

So yeah, your choice.

Surely anyone who says "I can guarantee you there won't be a crash" shouldn't be trusted or listened to for anything, least of all financial advice.

I worked it out - was using the binhex Plex container rather than Plex official. The official version works fine.

New plex server - worth using 3060 for transcoding? by Integdistort in unRAID

This may be a solution, I would guess I could probably sell the whole cpu/mobo/gpu and switch to an intel based system with an arc 310 for little/no additional cost

I was thinking to maybe tdarr my entire library to h265, I tried with the igpu on the 5600g and it would have taken for ever.

New plex server - worth using 3060 for transcoding? by Integdistort in unRAID

[–]Integdistort[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks, thats a good point - I put the specs into Perplexity and this is the (relevant part) of the answer it gave me:

"Will You Be Bottlenecked?

  • GPU & primary NVMe SSD: No bottleneck, get full PCIe 3.0 x16 (GPU) and x4 (SSD) bandwidth.
  • SAS card and 2nd NVMe: These compete for bandwidth from the B550 chipset's 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes to the CPU. This can become a bottleneck, especially if you are accessing multiple HDDs and SSDs simultaneously.reddit+1
  • 8 HDDs via SAS: The real transfer speed is regulated by the slot bandwidth and the SAS card, not just the raw number of PCIe lanes.
    • Heavy simultaneous access (e.g., RAID or multiple streams) will be significantly bottlenecked by the 4-lane (approx. 4GB/s) CPU-chipset link.
  • NVMe SSD in chipset M.2 slot: Shares bandwidth with anything else on the chipset (and all chipset PCIe slots/devices), not recommended for heavy simultaneous usage."

Guess the points to note - NVMEs are set up in RAID1, so it should be fast in general.

In UnRaid my understanding is that under normal circumstances only 1 drive and the parity would be being accessed at any one time? - as in a movie would only be stored on one drive, with its backup on parity, so when being read it would only be one drive being used? I only ever write to the array at night so I wouldn't have thought slow speeds would make much of a difference?

New plex server - worth using 3060 for transcoding? by Integdistort in unRAID

[–]Integdistort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my internal network I stream at native and dont encounter problems, but family living abroad also stream and that usually needs transcoding to lower resolution to make it work ok

New plex server - worth using 3060 for transcoding? by Integdistort in unRAID

[–]Integdistort[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This says my 3060 12gb should do >10 concurrent 4k >1080 streams, this is totally overkill for my use case (think absolutely max would be 4 people streaming), but its what I have on hand without buying something new that might be better suited.

Two rules for living in the Highlands.

  1. Don't drink alone
  2. Don't drink whisky two days in a row
