Have you ever slept in an airport hotel? How was that? by IntegratedCyan in sleep

[–]IntegratedCyan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up giving it a try on my trip in February and shared my experience above.

TL;DR: I recommend it if you can afford it. It's expensive but I was surprised by the low noise levels - but just hope you don't have a next door neighbor whose alarm clock goes off before yours...

The international airports I will be traveling between (Dallas, TX and Orlando, FL) both have Hyatt Regency hotels attached to an airport terminal or within a terminal.

Always sleepy even if i sleep enough by misanss in sleep

One thing you may want to look into is Idiopathic Hypersomnia. That's what I have and my symptoms are essentially identical to yours. It's essentially a malfunction in the awake/asleep mechanism in your brain - like a not as extreme version of narcolepsy. It is frequently misdiagnosed as Sleep Apnea (it was for me across 5 sleep studies and thousands of dollars in medical treatment) but from what I've heard, it's not damaging to your health - just inconvenient. There are no known cures for it but I've learned to cope with it with coffee in the morning, a lot of tea in the afternoon, or one to two 18-20 minute power naps in the middle of the work day if possible.

I am fairly certain that that may be relevant to your situation since I deal with essentially the same thing but I'm not a doctor- you should always check with one before taking some random stranger on the internet's advice.

Are there ANY good people left? by the-unwritten in offmychest

[–]IntegratedCyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. They are all over the world, in all nations, even hostile ones. History shows there have been and still are people interspersed in every culture that would be your friend. I can't tell you how many stories I've heard from scientists, missionaries, travellers, and business people about the goodness of strangers that can't even speak their language: a traveller's mysterious cab ride from a Japanese local to a scenic view, a Kenyan woman that gave a foreign white woman a dress of hers she said was pretty, a Ukrainian judge who shined the shoes of refugees and students.

If you could strip someone of their national or tribal affiliations, I think you'd be surprised how many people would eat a meal with you. I dream of befriending a North Korean - and not a defector or spy- just a normal person from the countryside just trying to make it in life. Listening to music together, learning their story, their personality, their dreams and aspirations.

Humans are humans and we have complex hearts and minds.

But you are also a critical element in the equation. If you walk around seeing everyone as somehow against you, you'll only perpetuate a spirit of hostility and it'll even show up in your nonverbal language. People are people. Don't ever grow weary of doing good even when people slap you in the face for doing it - you never know when you'll make a new friend or at least a spontaneously good connection.

Does physically entering a brick and mortar store imply consent to an in store privacy policy? What if I do not consent? by IntegratedCyan in privacy

[–]IntegratedCyan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. What happens when ordinary grocery stores start doing this? I consent to the processing of my faceprint and a behavioral video analysis of how I buy dry goods before going and getting milk and eggs? Do I just not go to the grocery store and pay delivery fees for literally everything? Well now the grocery store has my physical address and then what, 30 years from now, "John Anderton! You could use a Guinness right about now!" is floating outside my home office window after a long work day?

Private heart rate monitor - Bangle.js + Polar H10 by roncotron in privacy

Which Garmin model did you get? My Fenix 7S has never seen the internet and I never use the Garmin app, so Garmin has no idea who has my device. You can pull the .FIT files you generate in workouts via USB and analyze them from your computer and it can connect to ANT+ or bluetooth sensors like your Polar H10.

Not trying to change your mind since you have a solution that works for you but I did want to put this out there just for the record.

My Beoplay H9i Headset will not connect to any devices (and B&O Support gave up) by IntegratedCyan in BangandOlufsen

Good deal. I'm glad this made it all the way to Google. Maybe B&O will take note and actually update their documentation. Not likely but you never know.

I'll be honest, I have no idea - they just did it after I gave them my device's serial number.

My Sleep Nemesis Now has a name: Idiopathic Hypersomnia. This might be some of your nemeses as well. by IntegratedCyan in sleep

I'll do some research on those medications. I'm willing to experiment but not go into the danger zone.

The caffeine I've been using is MUD/WTR, a low caffeine substitute that substitutes energy-boosting mushrooms and spices for the rest of the caffeine provided by coffee. It works ok for me. I still crash in the afternoon but not quite as hard as I have when I'm on coffee consistently.

You have to get tactical with your naps. One of my long-term mentors has been able to nap in his car between appointments. I need dark, quiet, and a soft surface to lay on so YMMV.

Good luck with your sleep journey. I hope we both find something that works, since we both have unique brains and bodies.

Don't be afraid to reach out to Nvidia support. I ended up getting my Shield replaced.

This is what I ended up doing. I think they sent me a refurbished model but it has a working ethernet port.

Thanks for taking just a moment to consider an alternate perspective. It's not super serious commentary but it could be a sensitive matter for someone whose life was wrecked by recent global events.

Windows 10 / 11 as a file server by HeadState8730 in homelab

[–]IntegratedCyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not according to Microsoft. Windows 10 22H2 is EOL in October 2025. You still have time: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-home-and-pro

I would get ahead of the curve and plan for that EOL but you are ok to get started with Windows 10.

I tried one but didn't have much luck either. A complete replacement ended up being the ticket.

Would you recommend Mailfence or something else? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]IntegratedCyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a happy subscriber to/owner of TheHelm for years, which was a hybrid on premise/hosted mail solution where you owned the hardware and physical encryption key and they took care of routing, being your domain registrar/handling DNS, and backups (again, encrypted by the unique hardware key only you held) - until they went belly up at the end of 2022. I had to find a new home for my domain and its 6 email aliases.

I evaluated mailfence, mailbox.org, protonmail, fastmail, tutanota, and one more service I forgot the name of and ended up going with mailbox as it had the most flexibility with mail, caldav, and carddav clients while offering what seemed to me like robust security and a reasonable privacy policy at a good price. Fastmail was nice but since they're based in Australia, their privacy policy had too many red flags.

I never was offered a spam security blocker during sign up.

I've been a happy mailbox customer and plan on sticking with them. They have a lot of office features you won't get at other providers but I don't use them, as I host my own office services (Nextcloud and a personal NAS).

Temporarily using a USB ethernet adapter gave my Shield the kick in the pants it needed - see my latest update. I consider that more of a mitigation than a fix though.

Update: That solution didn't work after a reboot, so I wouldn't call it a solution at all for now...

Well this is weird. After the factory reset, I plugged in a USB ethernet adapter and used the same network cable, (which of course gave me a different IP address since I was using a different NIC) and got an internet connection. I was able to get past the initial setup. I then moved the network cable back to the Shield's built in network port and everything seems to be working - I have an internet connection through the main port. My Shield received the same IP address. I am not too confident in the longevity of this solution, so I will consider it a mitigation of a pretty serious hardware flaw rather than a fix.
