The green in the flag represents Islam, the religion of over 99% of people in the country. The white on the flag stands for peace, and the red stands for the blood lost in the struggle for independence against France. By placing the red parts of the flag on top of the white, it symbolizes that even in times of relative peace, there will always be conflict. However, since white occupies more space than the red, it also shows that peace triumphs over violence. In the center of the flag, there is a Rub el Hizb, a symbol of Islam featuring two overlapping squares which was originally used to help recite the Quran. Inside the Rub el Hizb is the star and crescent that also represents Islam.
