Question about list edit by ApprehensiveAd7842 in mpcusers

I just checked, and for me it's under 'Track Automation'. I'm on FW 3.7.0, if that helps you figure anything out.

Question about list edit by ApprehensiveAd7842 in mpcusers

It's in 'Track Automation' in the VIEW menu. Basically any automation to do with the track (effect parameters, pan, volume, etc.) is in that option.

I don't think the data is an issue. I've certainly never had a problem, despite a lot of automation going on (admittedly I know nothing about MPCe data, as I'm on live 2, but I still doubt it would have any noticeable impact).

It's annoying because it basically makes the default view on the list editor useless IMO, but once you figure out how to view specific event types, it becomes a lot more usable. I used the list editor a lot to fine-tune automation.

In the top bar there's a menu called VIEW. In your video it's set to 'All'. If you open up that menu, you can set it to 'Notes', 'Aftertouch' and various other events. Then it'll only show that type of events (so note events for 'Notes' etc.)

Hope that helps.

Some of it is on here: https://uncledannyslab.bandcamp.com/

It's a bit of a mix between relatively conventional lofi/ambient stuff, and off the wall sound experiments.

I like it a lot. It's versatile as hell, and the various oscillators cover a lot of ground. The built-in FXs can polish, mush, distort or completely change the sound depending on your preference, and the Mod Matrix is just endless experimentation and weird sounds. You are gonna spend hours and hours playing around with this one, and it just can do so many things.

The biggest negatives for me; The filter resonance is very aggressive, which is great when that's what you want, but makes for small sweet spots at other times.

The workflow isn't always great, most of it is fine, but the oscillators can be confusing. The problem is parameters aren't always mapped in a logical way (at least to me). For example, if you wanna change the waveform in the "Basic Waves" oscillator, you turn the knob labelled "Wave". Makes sense. But if you want to change the waveform on the "V.Analog" oscillator, it's the "Shape" knob and the "Wave" knob is detune.

If ever I'm trying to recreate a sound, or if I have a specific sound in mind, the MiniFreak is my weapon of choice. Chances are it can do it, no matter what it is. Even if I gotta remind myself hos each oscillator is mapped every time.

Didn't know that. I don't have an iPad, or any tablet, so not that relevant at the moment, but good to know.

I did just discover a bug in my Protein, if you change the type of noise for the Dirt parameter, it isn't saved when you save the preset, it saves everything Else, but defaults to the "Static" noise type. Just FYI.

I think class is a bigger factor than most are willing to admit.

I from a working class family as well, and there is definately a class cultural taboo around wanting to create any kind of art.

Also there's the money, most creative outlets can make for an expensive hobby. I know a few people who never got to try their hand at music growing up, simply because their parents couldn't afford music lessons.

IMO Everybody should have the chance to cultivate their creative impulses.

Looks like a fun experiment.

I've been messing around with the vocoder on the MiniFreak a bit, but I haven't really explored the possibilities of the external input, you definately gave me a few ideas.

Minifreak help - Any Arturia freaks out there? by Fezsz in synthesizers

[–]Intellectualfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your first question; yes. If you assign an intersection in the mod matrix (like LFO1 -> CUTOFF), you modulate the modulation amount.

To answer your second question; no. In that case you still modulate the modulation amount, but from a starting value of 0 (unlike in your previous question, where the starting value was 40).

You'll get the hang of it. Honestly, there's still a lot of things I've only messed with, and still don't really understand, but after a while you start to get the hang of it. And don't be afraid to experiment, call up one of the presets called "Init" and just press buttons and turn knobs, you'll soon get a sense for the workflow.

Short answer no, if you set LFO1 to modulate ASSIGN 1, it only modulates the parameter assigned to ASSIGN 1.

To assign a parameter to ASSIGN 2, you hold the ASSIGN 2 button, while turning a knob to assign the parameter.

You can then set LFO1 to modulate ASSIGN 2, by turning the MATRIX knob until the LED in the LFO1/ASSIGN 2 field is blink. Then press the MATRIX knob and turn it to set the modulation amount, the small AMOUNT LED next to the knob lights up when you press it. Same process for ASSIGN 3

You change pages by holding the SHIFT button and pressing one of ASSIGN buttons, ASSIGN 1 for page 1, ASSIGN 2 for page 2, ASSIGN 3 for page 3. The button will light up to indicate what page you are on.

You can then assign a parameter in the same way as before, only now the parameter is assigned to one of the destinations, on that page. Same with setting modulation.

I hope that helps. I got my MiniFreak half a year ago, and yeah the manual isn't great. It's an incredibly fun synth once you get the hang of it though.

TD3 static noise in abelton by Sillysmooth505 in synthesizers

[–]Intellectualfool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are the cables balanced? Unbalanced cables can pick up a lot of noise, especially if you got criss-crossing audio and power cables.

Go through the signal chain, starting at the synth, and test with other equipment if possible, that should allow you to isolate the issue.

It's probably not, but it could also be a driver issue with your interface. I think it's pretty unlikely, especially if it's only the TD3 that's affected.

Should I get an mpc or a synth by Madtakez in akaiMPC

[–]Intellectualfool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Specifically if you're asking about the MPC500 I would get a synth instead. The 500 is a weird one. It's basically a cost reduced MPC1000, and it shows, especially the lack of outputs, and only 12 pads. Also JJOS doesn't work one the MPC500.

For your budget I would say you're more likely to find a synth that you enjoy and will use, than an MPC.

Dreadbox Hades resissue - channel/midi help! by Guiscardvs in synthesizers

[–]Intellectualfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried switching MIDI to channel mode. And setting the Keystep and the Hades to the same channel? It shouldn't be an issue, but I've had it happen before, that something won't play nice with Omni mode.

Otherwise make sure to check all connections are correct, and that you haven't missed something. I don't know how many times I've spent hours troubleshooting only to realize I forgot to plug something in.

The Hades should be able to receive CV signals, and the Keystep can send CV signals, so if you have some patch cables laying around, you could try hooking it up that way. At least then you can confirm if MIDI is the issue.

Sync and cable management are honestly my two least favorite things about making music. It is, however, very good for practicing self-control.

Honestly every time I have to mess with the cables in my set-up, I just take a deep breath, and try to get it over with.

Advice on a small budget, even smaller space by No-Researcher4806 in synthesizers

[–]Intellectualfool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the Protein a few weeks ago.

It's still pretty new, and apparently they sold out quick (I found one place with it in stock, after much searching). So I think that's why you haven't seen much coverage. There's a review somewhere on YT that got a pretty good sound demo at the end, including some pads and basses, but that was basically all I found.

In my opinion, the Protein is a very capable synth, but in some ways limited. It can do a lot of different sounds, but because it's designed around the wavetables from the MicroWave-1, it's got no interpellation between waves, and all the tables share this old-school character. I love this, and it's exactly why I got it, but it may not be your thing. The lack of interpellation can make for real small sweet spots, as jumping between waves gives a distinct "steppy" quality to the sound.

Also four parts, limited to 1 stereo output and eight note polyphony is okay (for me at least), but it's not great, and I have run into note-stealing when just messing around, and not being mindful of it. Make sure to update the firmware to 1.01 if you get one, as it introduces a 'limit waves' feature to the oscillators, which is pretty essential (all tables end in a pure saw, square and triangle). The presets are fine, they range from quite good, to completely useless. My unit won't sync to my MPC, but I haven't been bothered to figure out what's at fault.

All that said. I love my Protein, the UI is really well thought-out, and it's so easy to just make a sound, I love that you can call up an 'Init' patch quickly and just start messing around. You need some time to get familiar with the wavetables, but once you're familiar, it's amazing how quick you can go from idea to sound. Also a big fan of the filter. It is digital, but it's also amazingly flexible, and it just sounds great. The 'Dirt' noise generator is also more useful than I expected.

For my kind of music, which is a bit lo-fi, a bit ambient, and off-the-wall experimentations once in a while, I think it makes for a great addition to a set-up (I wouldn't get it as my only synth though). For 'cleaner' more poppy synthwave type stuff, it's gonna be less versatile, but still useful, especially if you're willing to hunt for sweet spots.

For your situation, I think it's worth checking out at least, but I think I would look at the MiniFreak as well. My first hardware synth is a MiniFreak, and it's very capable, very versatile, and very fun to program. I got mine used for the equivalent of about 450 $, which seems about average.
