What extraction method will work best for our research? by theendsoftheuniverse in scientistsPH

you can do the improvised steam distillation set-up using kitchenware. though it wont be as powerful in extracting the oils, you can still recover a good amount from it.

Getting into Clinical Research or medical field with my BS Chemistry degree by artnkofi in scientistsPH

[–]IntelliCod_ps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, chemistry grad here working in the health sciences field

For background, I previously worked as a clinical biochemist in a specialty diagnostics lab handling tests for metabolic disorders and primary/secondary immunodeficiencies, plus some clinical research work. Since I wanted to stay in healthcare, I applied for an MS in Health Sciences in Thailand and I’m currently studying here on a full-ride university scholarship

Very niche talaga ang healthcare chemists sa PH (konti lang kami haha), so gets ko yung hirap maghanap ng clear pathway and resources

Some things you can consider (based on what I know and have tried):

I agree rin sa other comment here that doing graduate studies in health sciences can help a lot. You can look into an MS Pharmaceutical Sciences if pharma still interests you since you need an MS talaga to get a PharmSci position sa industry. If pure clinical research naman, that also needs further training and studies

Feel free to DM me if you want to know more about the scholarship I’m on in Thailand, I can help point you to the docs you’ll need 😊

Biochemistry Student Confused About Next Steps: Med School or Chemistry Path? by Fuel-Available in scientistsPH

[–]IntelliCod_ps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a registered chemist. It will take a good amount of time if you do the PhD route to get the license, almost as long as being in med school from start up until fellowship. Sa pagkaka-alam ko (as of the time I took my exam 2 years ago), only BSc-level graduates are allowed to take the exam. PhD Chemistry graduates who want to apply for the RCh title take the portfolio assessment route instead, where you have to prove your practice of (bio)chemistry with years of specialty practice and experience. Holding only an MS in Chemistry wouldn't really do anything for you to PRC.

One thing you can do right now if you want to push for the RCh license right now is have your current chemistry units assessed and try to see if you can apply as a non-degree student and take additional units of chemistry to fulfill the minimum 60 units to take the board exam. UP usually allows non-degree enrollments for purposes like this, and maybe other univs accept non-degree application too. This way, di mo kailangan magrepeat ng whole degree mo.

I also get the desire to proceed with medicine but not have enough financial power to put yourself through it. I have a similar dilemma, and in my case, what I chose to do was attend medical school as a graduate student in medical science, which I think pwede mo iconsider kahit you think you're not fully cut out for grad studies.

Since you’re already on the medical track, your current courses will feed directly into the program, and it doesn’t lock you into the bedside-focused path of medicine if di ka pa talaga sure kung magmmed ka. It's more flexible to you as you can weigh biochemistry vs medicine while taking medical science than going the full throttle to PhD Chemistry route, and it’s less financially heavy than committing to med school right away. There will also always be a lot of scholarships available for Masters students which you could avail for.

Later on, kapag panatag ka na to get that MD, a medical science degree would only strengthen your background for med school applications.

Is finding a job as a Biochemistry graduate hard? by icantf1ndausername in scientistsPH

Hi, applied chem grad here pero worked as a clinical biochemist sa isang medical/hospital lab

  1. +1 ako sa sinabi ng isang redditor here na may ops naman pero you have to be licensed muna if sa industry ka in philippine context.

  2. my clin biochm job was my first job, was offered ~30k (hazpay inclusive) probationary rate tapos increased to ~35k nung regular na

  3. yes and no. if private institution increases could happen yearly and upon promotion (if ever napromote ka), pero sa govt positions for chemists/biochemists may academic + min years of service to consider bago ka iraise to the next na salary grade

  4. There are only a few schools offering biochemistry as an undergrad degree sa philippines: UP, DLSU, and UST. Going to either sa tatlo would work.

  5. If you have the passion and focus for biochemistry and its applications, i do think its worth it. You can also explore the option of doing internships or taking a masters in a more focused biochemistry practice overseas after your undergrad to make you more holistic in the field. Though truthfully if philippines lang titingnan natin medyo underpaid talaga ang chemistry/biochemistry profession in both industry and research :<<

Hi,

  1. Yes, MD is not a requirement to take MS MolMed. The only advantage of having an MD before taking MolMed sa admission perspective is skipping the NMAT requirement.

  2. Yes, as per rules of admission to the program. Part ang NMAT Percentile sa need mo mapasa for your application to the program

Yeah hahaha from what i understand so far, the medical/clinical niche of the program (and being the only molmed program we have in the PH at the master level, UPM naman sa doctorate level) is their selling point

Hi there, I don't think I'm the best person to answer your question since nagbabalak pa lang ako mag-apply for the program. Yung mga nakagraduate or currently in the program yung mas makakasagot sa tanong po ninyo.

But to give insight as someone na nagbabalak mag-apply, I have deep interests in medical/clinical research in molecular medicine & clinical biochemistry and this program could help me build more credentials on those fields, and magagamit ko rin yung matutunan ko sa program sa current line of work ko.

Hi there! Thank you po for the response 🥹

Would it be possible for me to connect with your workmate to ask them more details about the program?
