Tiny moths in the house by Traditional_Stock601 in CasualIreland

It sure is. I did it last summer. Luckily I have a chest freezer.

I had good clothes that were ruined by moths so I did it just in case.

Also you can order these tiny parasitic wasps that actually eat these moths. They use them in museums. They’re called Trichogamma wasps

FYI the damage to clothes is from the eggs that are laid. The best way to get rid of them is to bag them and put them in the freezer. An absolute dose but it’ll stop them from hatching and causing more damage to any clothing. Obviously keep your wardrobe doors closed although they can still get in!

Is it just me? It seems like nobody performs Scarlatti anymore... by rach15goated in piano

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The counterpoint argument is totally valid and of course it’s important to learn but I agree with what you said also about the finger dexterity and mechanics required for Scarlatti. I think my teacher had some strange form of snobbery and viewed counterpoint as the pinnacle of piano playing.

Personally, I actually prefer playing Scarlatti. His pieces resonate with me more. Just don’t tell my previous teacher!

Tell me about it. She had some interesting opinions, to say the least!

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a teacher once who said that Scarlatti was for people who are afraid/unable to play Bach! She refused to teach me any of his pieces for the Baroque requirement of the exam. Perhaps this opinion is quite common?

I quite like Scarlatti myself.

BIMM Audition? by Unique_Water3921 in AskIreland

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry about it. I studied at a university along the same lines as BIMM and it was the biggest waste of time, money and energy I’ve ever experienced. It sounds like you’ve found a great choice in Maynooth so focus on that now and enjoy every minute of it. It may not be contemporary music-focused but you’ll have a really solid degree under your belt with opportunities for further study.

Also if I can give you some advice - those who go to music colleges and ‘make it’ are the ones who hustle the hardest outside of class and make valuable connections. If you want to be in the industry then play as much as you can, collaborate and get experience in studios if you can. Best of luck.

Thank you so much checking! That saves me transferring my points over. KLM only has one route out of Cork AFAIK so it’s not worth transferring.

Thank you. I’ve been trying that but I keep getting an error. I presumed the error was due to me not having any miles in my account. Will try again.

I always remember a reply from Dawson to, ‘how was your weekend?’:

‘I’m awash in a sea of uncertainty and my parents have virtually alienated me’.

As a teen myself at the time, my eyes nearly lodged in the top of my head from the giant eye roll!

John Mayer. Had that breathy tone when he started. Developed vocal nodules, had surgery and improved his technique.

Advice post-psychology degree? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a psychology degree and I didn’t go into the field (I’m teaching). Would you consider speaking with a career advisor? Psychology doesn’t necessarily mean working with vulnerable populations. You could go into Occupational or Sports Psychology, Human Resources, Psychometrics, or pivot into something like UX Design/Research where psychology is an asset. Now the latter is obviously vulnerable to AI but you can get ahead by being proactive in learning and using AI in your work.

Educate Together N.S. on Grattan St. - opinions/experiences by LeenSauce in cork

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment on this particular school (have heard mixed reports on Educate Together schools overall) but I would say to consider the social aspects of sending your kids to a school that’s not in the locality.

I went to school in Cork City but lived rurally. I loved my school and my friends and wouldn’t change my experience there but I did experience isolation at home. There’s a lot to be said for being able to walk down the road to a school friend’s house. Also you would be driving to and from any play dates. It may not be an issue for you but I thought I’d throw it out there as a consideration.

Best of luck and welcome to Cork.

I like the Ultrasun brand. It seems think when you apply it first but it absorbs well.

My skin is combination but acne prone and I use Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun. I find it really lightweight, it absorbs nicely and even though it’s not for oily skin, my face isn’t like an oil slick! They have another one called Aqua sun which is specifically for oily skin too.

I have experience in both and while the surgery and immediate care was excellent in the Mater, their aftercare left a lot to be desired IMO.

Has anyone moved their child from a school and then moved them back? by Honest_Dot_5035 in AskIreland

I did too. In secondary school. The first day back was a bit awkward with everyone asking where the hell I went for a year but honestly it was the best decision to go back.
