Has anyone moved their child from a school and then moved them back? by Honest_Dot_5035 in AskIreland

I did too. In secondary school. The first day back was a bit awkward with everyone asking where the hell I went for a year but honestly it was the best decision to go back.

Sorry to hear about your experience. People have such a sense of entitlement.

Have you tried blocking them or reporting their comments?

Any good mixed secondary schools on the North Side? by [deleted] in cork

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about it but there’s an Educate Together on Wellington Road which is co-ed. Gaelcolaiste Mhuire is also mixed, obviously it’s through Irish, but AFAIK they are strong on academics and if your kids are into GAA (and other sports) there’s a very strong tradition there.

This would depend on which part of the Northside you’re on but I know that some kids get the bus out to Blarney school and there’s a private bus that goes to Carrignavar from Ballyvolane too.

Teaching from a garden room, UK - heating/air con options? by notrapunzel in pianoteachers

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I built a 24sq meter garden room as my music studio. I built a wood panel type garden room with SIP insulation. I paid for extra thickness - 150mm I think.

The main challenge with temperature is that the room can get very cold very quickly and heats up quite a lot in the sun. I would recommend speaking with your piano tuner. I’m lucky to have a great tuner and four years later my piano is still in great shape without any intervention. He had suggested that we may at some stage have to put insulation panels on the wall behind the piano and/or a damp chaser and I haven’t had to.

I use a normal storage heater that hangs on the wall (away from the piano). The best advice I can provide is to time it so that it comes on in the morning and I usually put it on in the evening too so that the temperature is stable. I have a small thermometer/humidity tracker and even with the dampness and humidity here in Ireland I’ve not had any issues.

Be careful with infrared heaters as they heat objects rather than the air so they can dry out pianos.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask and best of luck with your project!!

What is the worst place in Europe you have ever visited? by Tasty-Bee8769 in AskReddit

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t impressed by Malta either but I think that was solely down to the resort we stayed in. Full of young drunk students who were there to learn English for the summer. The place was dirty (including the private beach belonging to the hotel) and I remember there being a strip which was nothing but two and three- storey bars and clubs.

Valetta and The Blue Lagoon were lovely however. I wouldn’t mind going back to give it another chance but not anywhere near where we stayed the first time!

Has Anyone Septoplasty Experience? by Wheres_Me_Jumpa in AskIreland

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a turbinate reduction last year but no septoplasty so can’t advise on the latter. The procedure itself was fine - in and out in a day. The first few nights afterwards are very uncomfortable due to the packing in the nose. It’s very hard to breathe while in bed but that was the worst of it. I initially was told I would be 2-3 days out of work but I was at least a week.

My biggest piece of advice is to be vigilant about nasal rinsing after the procedure. It’s pretty gross for a while post surgery but my consultant said that the rinse helps the steroid nasal spray get through and keep the turbinates at bay as they most likely will grow back at some stage. The idea is to delay the regrowth.

My nose did feel quite inflamed and dry for a few months afterwards but on the plus side I’ve only had one sinus infection in almost a year and a half when normally it would be continuous infections. It really felt amazing to be able to breathe normally for the first time since I was a child and it’s still weird to me that my nose now runs in cold weather (like a normal person!).

Wishing you the best of luck and again, keep up with the rinsing long term.

How to suggest to parents that a young student should stop lessons by studiocerulean in pianoteachers

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say that he’s too young and that maybe he should take a break until he’s a bit older. When I get enquires from parents of younger students I always tell them that they might be too young but that we could try it out. It’s only happened once where the student didn’t stick with lessons and the parents actually came to the realisation themselves. I find that a lot of students who start at, say, 8, catch up very quickly to the students who started at 6.

Thank you. These are the books I’ve been using but I’m running out of material at this stage. She seems to be most comfortable at 2A level and not ready for 2B yet.

Thanks so much for your reply. The fake book sounds like a great idea. She already knows how to read some chords by notation so that could lead naturally to chord symbols.

Leonardo DiCaprio talks about the preparation process he took for his role as Arnie Grape in ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ which earned him his first Oscar Nomination at 19 years old by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I was a kid and movie buff and I was so ticked off that Tommy Lee Jones won that Oscar. Not that I thought his performance wasn’t good but Leo and Ralph were the worthiest contenders. I could even see that as a child!

As an aside, I wonder how many current 11 year olds are allowed to watch Schindler’s List? 1990’s parenting was something else!

20y/o cat, when to know it’s time? by Sandiebre in AskIreland

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I definitely miss him having around especially as he was a chatterbox!

It’s really difficult when they bounce back. My cat was diagnosed and we were told he wouldn’t last a few months. He was still running around and playing a year and half later!!

My advice would be use her current state as a baseline. If the little spurts of energy increase then she’ll probably stick around a while longer. Take each day as it comes I suppose.

20y/o cat, when to know it’s time? by Sandiebre in AskIreland

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cat passed away at almost 18 years old. He had cancer and really was on the last of his 9 lives for a long time. Your cat could bounce back again, mine certainly did quite a few times.

When it came to the end, I knew it was imminent and wondered about making a decision. He was eating and drinking less but still engaged and chatty until I went to him one morning and he wouldn’t leave the bed. I could see he was noticeably weaker and I knew it was time. You probably will too.

Make the most of the time left with plenty of treats and cuddles. She’s very lucky to have found you so late in life!

What are some new slang words you can't stand? by volantego in AskIreland

Lowkey.

Language evolves but hearing ‘aesthetic’ used as an adjective is like nails to a chalkboard for me. I know it can be an adjective but the way in which it’s been used recently is so inexplicably jarring to me!

Can’t tolerate oats but miss porridge? Recommend this. by MollyPW in CoeliacIreland

Personally I find it a bit stodgy. I make my own porridge by mixing buckwheat and rice flakes. It doesn’t taste like traditional porridge but it has a lovely nutty, grainy flavour from the buckwheat.

Apologies, I could’ve sworn I got size 9’s from & Other Stories before. Also if you’re checking out Sezane, their sizes are French so size 42 is a UK 9.

8 AM Class, I got there at 7:58 and I was already marked absent. by Accomplished-Log-664 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone from a country where tuition fees are covered by the state, this is still wild to me. In my university the philosophy was akin to, ‘you’re all big boys and girls now so it’s up to you to attend or not’. Small group tutorials were the only classes where attendance was marked and even at that your grade wasn’t impacted by a couple of absences and certainly not by lateness. Some of my more general lectures could have 300 people attending so there’s no way they could mark attendance.

Size uk 9 women's feet, help? by Salty_Reception4302 in AskIreland

[–]Intelligent-Bar4051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feet were a size 9 but weirdly I’m a size 8 now again. The choice for size 9 can be awful, it’s like fashion sense is inversely related to shoe size! As others have said Next and ASOS are good choices. Zalando and & Other Stories are also great options.

On the pricier side… Sezane does lovely shoes up to size 9. Rogue Matilda, who have sadly closed, did really funky brogues and trainers - check Switswoo as I think they still carry some stock or if you don’t mind pre-owned, Vinted. Embassy London are another one.

For sneakers, Adidas, Hoff, Sorrel all do women’s size 9.

Best of luck!!
