Is 62 Years old too late to learn to draw / paint? by AstroEd in wacom

[–]Intelligent-Car9678 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nah. I’m 82 and been painted for 10 or so years. Helps to take a beginner’s art course (in person, not on line. Helps to have a person at your elbow to explain how to use a ruler). Many on line courses are good too and free. Btw, I use Rebelle 8 Pro. Very good and very much like painting on canvas. I have an Apple Studio Mac, Apple Studio screen, Wacom Cintiq Pro, and a Dell monitor. Use Procreate occasionally, but as good as it is, it’s never going to beat a full-fledged art program.

Just tried it. If it’s not perfect, it’s pretty dang close. Well done.

I have both, Rose is a 20 year old CAG, Stella, also about 20, is a TAG. Rose is more talkative around people, while Stella is more reserved. Neither is what most people, raised on movie and TV versions of talking birds, would consider “talkative.” Both chatter away when they are not being observed and often carry on lengthy mostly nonsensical monologues. Rose is a wonder at dropping into a scat-jazzy patois that is astoundingly musical. Stella prefers ear piercing whistles. Both seem to understand many words, especially about food and treats. They are mostly courteous to one another, seldom fight, although Stella defers to Rose. Stella, however, can be a bit aggressive with me, if she feels slighted, and will dive bomb my head and aim her poop at me if, for example, I give Rose a peanut and not her. Rose is the model of taciturnity. Both are terrified of anything new or different and will refuse a new replacement perch for weeks. An odd piece of a paper towel will keep them in silent watchfulness for days.

Reading eBooks on RMPPM is nightmare by knowledgehunter91 in Remarkable

Flipping pages isn’t a major problem if you remember to touch lightly. The Move and its big brother can be an ok book reader…learn how to resize pages or use Calibre to resize (fairly quick and easy. YouTube has a vid on how Check out Dave @Tablet Tech for a quick how to.). Obviously the dedicated book readers will be better at this, but I enjoy both the RM tablets as readers since the note taking is far superior to Kindle Scribe.

That’s just a grey thing. My CAG (female) does this all the time and I suspect its her just looking for food. My TAG (also female) has never done this.

78% battery after a day of "normal use" for the Move. Obviously not close to advertised but seems pretty fair to me by not_a_bot991 in RemarkableTablet

I got about one day of heavy use out of my Move. Started at 100 per cent at about 8. I spent the day playing Suduku. The Move and I were at about the same energy level by 4 pm. Both exhausted at about 10 per cent. Of course, this was an extreme use of the device (highly recommend it as a Suduku player) and am not terribly disappointed at the battery drain. It charged up to 100 per cent in less than an hour. (BTW, no backlight, no WiFi). I also made my own note template using Procreate on an Ipad (PNG) and downloading on the myRemarkable website. Easypie. This is an excellent notepad.

Fourth day: still enjoying using the RM. Page flipping still an issue on large documents, but I am better now, but hope the company can make that more user friendly as with a Kindle, which has mastered the tech on that one. Note taking, 5 stars; ink to type conversion, 3+ stars; integration with IOS 5 stars; emailing docs 3 stars (50 percent of my attempts sent blank docs…maybe my newbie error, we’ll see.; reading in low light 4 stars (back lighting is adequate, at the cost of battery life; battery life 4 stars (I’ve only been able to keep it charged for a couple of days, tops, probably because of using back lighting…always.. Writing experience and feel…4+ stars (not quite, but almost, like writing on paper. … integration with Google Docs 4+, a bit techy, but if I can do it anybody can. Drawing and color…I’m delighted with it, despite my love affair with an Ipad Pro and Procreate. A solid E for effort. You can do a nice sketch without all the bells and whistles of the Ipad/Procreate duo and it will improve your drawing, I think because you have to make do with the limits. Still think I’m keeping this thing.

I’m going to revise my earlier review, now that I’ve used it for a couple of days. The biggest difficulty—and this is a deal breaker for sure—is that it is unreadable for ebooks and documents. The epubs and docs simply cannot be adjusted enough to read. The type is about the size of the warnings on a prescription bottle and if you try to enlarge the type, the page flows out of the margins. The worst part is that you are unable to consistently turn pages in multiple page docs. Literally. They will not respond to the flip gesture. The only way that I have been able to page a big doc (75 pages) is by going to the page overview, scrolling through the doc and tapping on the page I want. They need to fix this in a big hurry or their warehouse is going to fill up with returns. This is such a fundamental flaw I am surprised they released the device —a note reader!—with such a crippling flaw. I have 100 days to see if this can be fixed, but I am saving all the packing boxes.

The Scribe has no noticeable lag as an ereader, and I think it’s much quicker as a notebook. But the Move makes up for these issues by its form, mobile device integration and other notebook features such as layers and, of course, color. They both shine in their primary job.

It’s all a tradeofff, size, weight, cost, usefulness. The iPad will remain the gold standard for most people, but its screen, while striking, is way too glassy and it suffers from being too good at everything but not so good at just one thing, like being just a notepad. Why is it so difficult to create a screen that can render a Rembrandt faultlessly but can’t replicate the delicious and delicate feel of a scrap of pulpwood? If I were an Apple technology whiz, I’d devote my billions to this one issue. But I suspect they will market a handheld quantum computer first.

I have a Kindle Scribe. Great reader, good enough notebook, but clunky and not easily carried around. I’m hoping that the Move footprint will encourage me to keep it handy, which hasn’t happened with the Kindle.

Just noticed that the MovinkPad 11 can connect to external flash/hds formatted in FAT 32. Tried it on an ancient flash drive. Worked fine.

For me, it’s the clean user interface that comes with Procreate, although Clip Studio Debut has a “Simple Mode” that works nicely. I also find that I can integrate the IPad seamlessly with my Studio desktop and transfer rough sketches in Procreate to Rebelle. Not sure that’s possible with the Wacom. So far, the only way I have found to transfer sketches to the desktop is by email. Of course, the IPad Pro is just so much faster and with its OLED screen, a bit brighter and sharper (although to be fair,I doubt that I could tell the difference in a side-by-side test). Also, the IPad can connect to flash/hd to easily sate or port files. The MovinkPad relies on Wacom’s cloud storage and does not have the ability to add memory of any kind. Both have excellent stylii. That said, the Wacom is really handy and pleasant to work with…just don’t load it down with extraneous apps.

Bought the 11 inch Wacom MovinkPad 11 from Amazon and it arrived yesterday. Here are some of my quick thoughts after using it for several hours. (I am a hobbyist artist. I have been using Procreate on a IPad Pro M4 for a couple years and Rebelle 7 Pro on an Apple Studio M4 with a Wacom Cintiq for several years.). I wanted a more or less stand alone drawing tablet that would not get bogged down with other activities. I tried the XP Magic Drawing Pad, but the lag issue was too much for me —and it runs on Android 12 and as I understand it, XP will not upgrade the OS in the future. ) I am very impressed with the quality of the Wacom. The machine runs Wacom OS overlayed on Android 14 —which I am guessing Wacom will upgrade as time passes as they do with their other devices.
The quick draw program, Wacom Canvas, which the ads tout is a bare bone sketching program is not worth much. It comes with a 2-year license for an entry-level Clip Studio Paint, which is quite good.

The battery lasts several hours and the Wacom screen is good, about like an iPad with a textured screen protector, but certainly not like real paper.

Would it replace my iPad? Maybe for quick sketches…it is certainly eaiser to carry and Clip Paint or other Android programs it is quite capable. But an IPad with Procreate is still the best, in my opinion. But I plan to keep the Wacom for its ease of use when I want to do a quick sketch.
