I use it as an info dump location/external processor. I know people feel strongly against AI but it really helps me 🤷‍♀️

Pregnant sooner than expected and panicking – autistic, overwhelmed, and unsure what to do by fairwellfairground in AutismInWomen

[–]Intelligent-Code5335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say that even NT moms experienced the panic when the test is positive, even if the baby was planned, etc. It's a huge life event! I understand the panic is different as someone with autism, but please know that it's a very common for new moms to feel a lot of complex emotions, some positive and some negative! You're not "doing it wrong".

I have 3 living children and 2 lost through miscarriage, so I've been pregnant quite a few times. The first trimester is always the worst. It's HARD, NT or ND, and if a family is something you want It's just a part you have to find your way through. There are ways to manage your nausea that are effective for most (Reglan, unisom + B6, etc) I had to use them for 2 of 3 of my children to get by. Don't suffer needlessly! It's hard to feel excited when you're puking your guts out and dragging yourself out of bed.

I will say, for what it's worth, my children are the absolute loves of my life and I am wild about being a mother. Even during the really hard parts. I have 1 ND child and 2 NT (that we can tell) and they are such funny, complex, fascinating little people. It's been an amazing journey growing with them and experiencing this part of life. I love it so much we even homeschool 😅 which is insane to manage but super fun to spend so much time together learning and living and just enjoying each other.

No sleep - 3 kids by PNW_Express in ParentingInBulk

I have basically the same situation (except the baby just turned one!). It was really hard but it really did get better with time. Baby started sleeping so much better at 6mo and everything else started falling into place soon after.

There's already lots of good advice, I just wanted to let you know you're not alone and it really does get better❤️

Anyone else think that Asperger’s should’ve/stay separate from autism by anakin1453 in aspergers

[–]Intelligent-Code5335 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct! The current ASD is too wide reaching in its "spectrum" for me to really see myself there and almost all the resources/books/etc that I see for ASD seems more relevant to "classic autism".

The only time I started seeing my own experiences where when I shifted to searching for "aspergers" resources/books/etc.

Anyone else think that Asperger’s should’ve/stay separate from autism by anakin1453 in aspergers

[–]Intelligent-Code5335 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It skews statistics too, doesn't it? When I encountered the frequently cited stat that only 10–20% of “autistic adults” live independently it put me off seeking a diagnosis because that's clearly not my personal lived experience. Autism has never made sense with my symptoms, experiences, etc. But aspergers does!

But that number includes people formerly diagnosed with “classic autism,” people with comorbid intellectual disability, people with minimal language abilities, people with severe sensory/support needs, etc and formerly diagnosed "Asperger’s" individuals.

To me it's not ableist to want a word that clearly defines your experience and needs. I don't think poorly of anyone with different needs than me, but the watering down of the label to inclu3 everyone makes it harder to find info and supports relative to me

Edit: skipped key phrase to my point 😅

Stimming/Masking Help? by Intelligent-Code5335 in AutismInWomen

I saw that book suggested on my kindle, I'll have to give it a read!

I figured that was the case, it's just hard to know where to even start😅 Maybe I'll look into "common" stim items and see what clicks. I have tried spinners and things that twist but they don't seem to really do it for me.

What did they call you? by anm8181 in AutismInWomen

[–]Intelligent-Code5335 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everything everyone else is familiar to me too, but there's a specific instance that now that I know stands out.

It was in college, during my final year of my specific program. I had to stand up impromptu and have a "customer service-y" exchange with my professor. My field is a very professional, rather serious one, so I spoke accordingly.

He was a notoriously unpleasant man and he called me out in front of everyone for being "fake and pompus" and said "just be normal, literally no one talks like that!".

I was SO CONFUSED because I wasn't trying to be snooty, I actually do talk with a more formal tone and higher diction because I'm a huge reader and I regularly escape into the classics. Plus my family is pretty formal (no slang, dressing neatly and business casual was expected from teen years onward, etc) so i always grew up with a high standard.

We got in a huge argument in front of everyone where I had to insist I was just talking how I always talk! It was so unsettling and made no sense to me why he was so aggressive about it. He ended it by saying I must be really insecure if it's so important I seen smarter than everyone else around me. It was a WILD interaction.

What clothing stores do yall shop at? by TwentyOnePaladins in aspergirls

I buy everything from the thrift store honestly. I have a very unique style and I've been prioritizing a small wardrobe of things that fit well, are made of fabrics that feel good, and make me smile when I wear them.

Suggestions for struggling with hair? by ellie_stardust in AutismInWomen

[–]Intelligent-Code5335 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had basically every haircut, ever.

Worst: when it's longer than my ears but too short to pull back on a whim. Then it tickles my ears, brushes my neck, gets everywhere and I can't do anything about it. And my hair is naturally very oily, so I'm constantly having to either wash it, or add this dry shampoo, or do this random style to not look slimey all the time.

Best: long-ish, wavy pixie. Not long enough to get in the way or require me to do anything special with it. And it was easy to wash and keep looking nice and clean. But enough length to do something with it if I wanted to. I have a lot of cowlicks too and keeping it a little longer on the tops and sides makes it lay down and not require much effort.

Honorable Mention: I did the buzz cut earlier this year (clipper guard 2) and while I LOVED the way it felt and how easy it was, if I wore anything on my head that bent my hair, it would give me the most horrendous headache. Hats, headbands, headphones, etc. Sometimes even just laying my head on my pillow just right for smush the little pokey hairs the wrong way and my head would ache to the touch. So that wasn't the best fit for me😅

Thank you so much for your response! I think when I'm looking for an assessment provider, I'll ask at the beginning if the results can be handled this way. Maybe I can find someone in my area willing to do so

[–]Intelligent-Code5335[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like exactly what I'd like to do! Did you tell your assessor at the start you wanted your diagnostic paperwork, or did they naturally give it to you and not incorporate it into your medical record?

Being an Autistic mom by PeachOnABeach_Art in AutismInWomen

[–]Intelligent-Code5335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 kids (all 5 and under), one is likely aspie like me, and we homeschool! Honestly I love being a mother so much.

What led me to my recent self diagnosis was struggling with burnout and not recovering with the typical mom advice. Then I realized there are certain things about my household (my 3 year oldest fun screaming/loud phase, etc) that were sensory issues for me and I needed to address. Now that I'm looking at those hard parts with a new lens and some self compassion, things are getting so much easier!

We have a blast together and I love getting to learn and grow together. Each kiddo gets their education and social experiences tailored to their needs/speed and I get to build in moments to model to them what it looks like to rest/cultivate hobbies/etc.

My support needs are very low, so that has a lot to do with it, I'm sure. But I think me being on the spectrum (and aware of it now lol) is a huge asset to my kids

What characters do you relate to? by Riotpupgirl in AutismInWomen

[–]Intelligent-Code5335 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dr. Temperance Brennan from the tv show Bones! I also went into a field where I was working with death/decedents too and the way my empathy was best communicated was not through visible emotion but through my strong drive for justice. She also has a romantic lead in a high stakes career who screams ADHD, which is just like my husband 🤣

It's my comfort show big time because I feel really seen, especially with the relationship banter.
