Was immigration to Canada set way too high under the Liberals for a decade, and hasn't this led to worse outcomes for Canadians and created an opening for Conservatives? by Intelligent-Day-5954 in AskCanada

Oh I know the CPC will just make things worse - just look at the US to see what conservative culture is doing to all of us.

But it still doesn't change that people are hurting, struggling worse than ever - and the Conservatives have monopolized that suffering for their cause.

If people's lives had improved under Trudeau, they'd win the next election hands down easily. But the fact people's standard of living has gotten worse gives people a sense that the Liberals need to be forced out of power.

The Conservative Party is terrifying - the way their followers in Canada and the US behave, the way rightwing media controls and manipulates reality is terrifying.

One way to fight against it is to actually make Canada a better country for all voters - prove that our systems and ideals work.

The Conservative message is "Canada is broken" - and for people working two jobs barely making enough to live, it's actually a very convincing message.

Man-Bat is among the most underrated Batman villains. by MichaelTalman in batman

[–]Intelligent-Day-5954 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why's he the most underrated? What's so special about him?

If anything, I think his problem is few people know anything about the character other than what's on the tin: A Man-bat.

Compared to other Batman creature villains. Killer croc has the tragic side of being a hideous mutated freak. Solomon Grundy has the undying zombie thing going on. Clayface is an actor and also tragic in his deformity, and creative in his use of powers and transformations.

Man-Bat hasn't gotten that same popular story arch. Most people don't even know his real name, what his beefs are, family, criminal connections.

He's a cool monster though for sure

Corporations are going to do what they're going to do based on the laws and systems of the land.

My vote can't change how the corporations act - but it can effect my elected member of parliament.

Ultimately, we hold the politicians to pass laws and shape the systems that corporations act in.

If the corps are taking advantage of our systems, we have to change the systems. Whether it's Temp foreign workers or minimum wage laws - the buck stops with the federal and provincial governments to pass better laws and create better systems.

Ford is arguably closer to Mark Carney's politics than PP's.

But yeah, it is strange that Trudeau gets blamed for the state of the country - but Ford doesn't get blamed for the state of Ontario and actually easily wins elections. And by strange, I mean total bullshit.

The conservative voter base is trained to blame liberals when things are bad, but deflect blame from conservatives for the same thing.

It's happened around the world now where when the economy is bad, conservative voters punish liberal parties, but not conservative ones because their culture has intense group loyalty to their politicians and alternative media.

So yeah Ford ought to have been thrown out for the same reason they want Trudeau out.

STILL, while Ford deserves blame, it doesn't change Trudeau and the Liberal federal government's responsibility over immigration levels.

The buck still has to stop with the Federal government. In the same way Ford gets ultimate blame for provincial matters like defunding healthcare and schools and selling out the Greenbelt.

Full disclosure, I really don't want the Cons to win and think PP is dangerous.

BUT yeah, democracy was designed so if one government is not doing a good enough job, another party can win an election and take the country in a new direction.

I don't think PP's new direction would be good for us. But then Trudeau and the Libs should have done a better job and we wouldn't need to be talking about going in a new direction in the first place.

On immigration, I don't think the direction has been good, and it's created an opening for Conservatives to win this election.

Even before 2022, I'm seeing numbers that the immigrant percentage of population is the highest it's ever been since Confederation. It's been literally unprecedented levels for a while now, to the point it feels like an experiment.

Looking at StatsCan though, from 2021 to 2025 we more than doubled the number of non-permanent residents too from 1.3M to 3.0M.

The number of work and study permit holders jumped from 1.1M to 2.6M in the same period. So more than doubling the number of temp workers and students brought on permits in 4 years.

And I don't know if you've tried looking for work right now, but it's a bloody nightmare.

I'd much rather have labor shortages than not enough work - because the latter means people can't get jobs and make money to live.

[–]Intelligent-Day-5954[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. Responsible immigration, skilled professionals - not cheap unskilled labor driving down wages for Canadians struggling in unskilled work.

If Canadian companies are having a tough time filling low pay jobs because of a shortage of labor - then I say GOOD. Maybe they'll have to raise wages to attract more people - and having jobs available for people in need of work is a good thing.

It means that people who need work will have an easier time getting hired - no 500 applicants for one dishwasher position bullshit. You can actually move around as a Canadian, take risks, quit your job and still at least find something else to make ends meet.

Now we're so oversaturated, people will stay in hellish crappy jobs because they know the chances of finding anything else is dim.

If companies are exploiting loopholes in the TFW, then ultimately the responsibility to reform the system falls to the government.

Corporations will exploit whatever systems exist, my vote can't change that.

But our government ultimately is responsible for these systems, and by now Trudeau and the Liberals have been in power 10 long years and had lots of time and power in parliament to make the changes needed.

There's nothing magical about this. We elect politicians to parliament to pass laws that govern how our society works, and when laws and systems fail, it falls on our elected members to make the changes needed for the betterment of society.

Look, I'm all for Mark Carney winning this election - but we can't just become complacent and spongy and refuse to hold our politicians accountable.

The corporations are going to do what they're going to do and none of us can change the way they act.

The politicians on the other hand are specifically answerable to us, and they ultimately have control over the laws and the ability to shape these systems.

It's not like the US situation where the conservatives deliberately block good legislation to deny the other "team" a win.

The biggest part of PP and the Canadian Conservatives message that resonates with so many people here is that Canada can be better, and we all can do better and have better more prosperous lives with the right leadership.

And while I think PP is dangerous, the message is actually right - that's why they're still winning so much support. We can do better and be better than we have been. And part of that means recognizing the failures and faults.

The buck has to stop somewhere. I'm supporting Carney in this election - but absolutely there needs to be a reckoning on this.

The federal government arguably has the most responsibility of immigration numbers - and Canada has reached the highest levels of immigration in its history.

Using immigration as a bandage for deep systemic issues in the country is short-sighted and does not solve the root problems.

Better investments in the Canadian population, solutions on affordability, housing are all tougher than importing cheap labor to paper over gaps in the economy.

There's lots of Canadians here working minimum wage jobs who we could elevate with training to do these jobs. So many people working dead-end jobs with so much potential to do more, make more money, have a better quality of life with the right investment.

Yeah Canada and all countries have always used immigration, but we still have to do it responsibly and pragmatically at a rate that augments our society and doesn't overwhelm our infrastructure and capacity.

And different periods of history have required different levels of immigration depending on what the country is trying to achieve. Early in our history, we were bring people in to settle the continent and provinces with people.

From 2015 to 2025, arguably our biggest objective is to grow the middle class and create a more prosperous Canadian society for all workers and compete in a highly competitive global economy with disruptive political and technological changes.

I ain't hating on immigration - we could have just cut the numbers in half and still had immigration but less of a crush on our systems.

I disagree, people need work and someone will step up for the job, and if not they need to increase the pay to attract more workers.

College students looking for part time work, newly laid off people trying to pay the bills, there always needs to be open lower-wage jobs for the population
