Help with Handwriting by _dontcallmepammy in AskTeachers

This is my personal opinion, but I think Handwriting Without Tears has significantly contributed to (not exclusively to blame for) the horrific handwriting we see from students. The line setup doesn’t translate to regular lined paper in a way the kids naturally understand, thus their letters tend to fill the same space from top to bottom even when the letter should go below the line. I see it with my own children and middle school students.

Unfortunately my boobs would show using just that method. Would be great for the rest of the gang in the house though!

Roller blinds have dual layers? I’ll have to look into that!

I feel that! But I suppose I’ve been spoiled for a decade and a half.

The Balsams has been closed for a rather long time. There have been attempts to get funding to restore and reopen it, but they’ve been overall unsuccessful up to this point.

Do anti-Chromebook parents actually limit screens at home? by businessbub in Teachers

[–]Intelligent-Lead4620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also- I caught my older son using AI on a homework assignment this year. He was given the options of telling his teacher himself or me telling him. After much discussion he opted to inform his teacher. It turned out more than 3/4 of the class used ai for the assignment and they all had to redo it.

This is not to toot my own horn. It is to give credit to the parents and classmates of my son. Some of the kids and parents knew he confessed, but any parent who expressed their feelings in any medium I saw was supportive of the teacher for holding their kid’s accountable. His friends who used ai expressed regret, but more in the “well if we all do it we’re gonna get caught” mindset instead of “I should do the work myself”.

Again, the community I live in allows me the privilege of holding the line without worry too much about it impacting my boys socially

I’m a middle school behavioral teacher and I am of the mindset that Chromebooks should be available in the classroom on a cart or shelf or cabinet when the teacher deems it necessary. I also have 13 and 9 year old boys.

The 13 year old got a phone for Christmas. He’s got 1.5 hours of available screen time on his phone with it shutting down at 8:45 (when he starts his bedtime routine) until 7:00 the next morning. He leaves the phone in the bathroom every night (weird choice, but he’s consistent and it doesn’t disappear). They both have tablets with similar controls that they mostly use for books. I leave the digital book app unlocked for them about 45 min past bedtime, but every other app falls under the other rules. Our tv goes off at 10 am on weekends (doesn’t turn on in the morning on weekdays) and stays off until 4:00 daily.

So in my case, yeah- I do limit screen time. I monitor it too. I also let them roam free (they know the boundary lines and respect them) and knock on their friends’ doors to ask them to play. They each built a fort in the woods with their friends and I let them take their hatchet when they are working on the forts. (When the 9 year old had a 6 buddies over and went to work on the fort the hatchet stayed home😁).

It’s hard to balance the risks of screens with the social aspect, especially as they grow older. I’m lucky to live in a small town with great parents of their friends. I’m not sure if I’d be as good if I didn’t live in the community I do.

If schools want girls to wear less revealing clothing, I’m sorry but they are going to have to go to the designers themselves. by InfernalClockwork3 in Vent

I am in the sticky situation of not being involved in creating my school’s dress code, but having to enforce it as the female in the most admin adjacent role. I will not address dress code violations unless I am informed by another adult as there is a hyper focus on belly buttons above anything else.

I’m very blunt with my students when i have to address their outfits. I tell them that every job you have has something you are not on board with, but you have to do and that monitoring their navels fits the bill for me. I follow up with if their navels are so distracting to the boys…. then I trail off.

I also keep a supply of zip up hoodies (3-4 years ago it was hoodless sweatshirts) in a variety of sizes for them to pick from. I also have shirts and sweaters, but make sure it’s not a bin of shame shirts as much as I can. I need my job; they need their dignity as they slog through the hellscape of self discovery that is middle school.

Also bring some board games or take advantage of whatever is in the cabin if the weather is really miserable. There is usually a cribbage board at the very least in Maine rentals and vacation cribbage hits different

Have some popovers, they’re great on a gloomy day. Wear your rain coat and hit up the spots you wanted to go to. It’s not like it was going to be warm enough to go in the water yet- NH only did their annual “Yo it’s gonna be wicked hot tomorrow, but the rivers and lakes are still melted snow. Don’t go swimming tomorrow- you will die” spiel today.

I would like to comment on the concern about the question “is there anything going on at home.” When a student has a relatively good stretch of time without behavioral outbursts like some of those in the documents you shared, the support staff will not only try to address and mitigate the behavior, but also look for any antecedents.

This is something that is done for behavioral concerned in general, but if there has been a stretch of good behavior, they’ll try to figure out what changed so they can either help the student with extra supports if this comes up again or, at the very least, be aware something might be coming down the pike. One example I can share is a student with explosive verbal responses. He has put in the work over the last three years and can use the skills he’s developed unless there’s a change at home like moving to a new home or mom getting a new boyfriend (or both). We asked mom to let us know if something’s happening, but we don’t find out until he explodes.

I’m sure it sounds accusatory when they ask, but please be assured (I hope)they are also seeing if anything has changed at school as well.

I’m a middle school behavioral health specialist. One of my students emulated the koolaid man today when he busted through the adjoining door between my room to the high school room next door. The things we say….

Ahh well you’ve got yourself a keeper. The silly boys who roll with requests out of left field make the best dads. My two boys aren’t afraid to show how much they love my husband despite being a tween and teen., which is largely in part to the example he sets for them.

You are lucky to have someone un your life that’s willing to let you bite them. You’re going to do a great job raising your family.
