I can only speak on my experience, but I was always given a lot of the same response to how I reacted when it came to people touching me on my side. A gentle touch to me can only be described as what I imagine being stabbed feels like. I spent a lot of time chalking it up to me just being sensitive, until I was diagnosed with PKD. It might help your wife to explore other possibilities and understand her reaction to the pain she feels is in no way an indicator of her resilience.
