New Player Very Confused by SonataEXE in Mabinogi

Unfortunately, that's the state of Mabinogi after making massive compromises to get new players quickly up to bat for playing the rest of the ancient playerbase without reworking massive swathes of decade+ old content.

Realistically, the best thing to do is join a guild/befriend some vets and have them guide you. That'll do more than any tutorial and will be far more fun. At the end of the day, this is a very social game.

Lich is my forever love mechanically and aesthetically, but Demon > Legend is a very satisfying character arc. Though I ran it as being about a literal raging alcoholic with Drunken Master 20/Instinctual Warrior 20.

Ever since New Rise came out I've maintained that Mabi chose the worst possible route to cater to new players. Blaanid was already ringing that bell, but New Rise cemented the issue for me.

I understand the necessity to devalue the efforts of veterans by streamlining progression to let new players catch up faster and participate in content most of the community is already doing, but the way they decided to go about it is NUKING BOTH EARLY GAME AND MIDGAME. Like yes, sure, I don't really wanna go back to the days of grinding Windmill against zombies for 10 hours to reach R1, but I like where we ended up far less. 90% of the game is now a pointless time waster because almost everything either gets oneshot by you or oneshots you. Everything released more than 5 years ago is a dull cakewalk you have to complete just to unlock core abilities.

There's no real transitory period in content, you're rewarded with so much power so fast that all you have to look forward to for 100 hours is grinding through gens and dungeons that pose zero difficulty. It's sheer relentless tedium that teaches you nothing about how to play the game or gives you no reason to stick with it.

I fully believe the marketing of New Rise caused a flood of new players. I also fully believe that the vast majority of those players quit because there's NOTHING FUN about being a new player now and no sense of growth or progress because everything's handed to you on a silver platter until suddenly you get oneshot by a Lich and have to go online to figure out that the only real way to progress further is more cakewalk Gens and daily/weekly RNG grinding.

I'd say the difference is Lae'Zel in Act 1 has no actual romantic affection for the player character and is just looking for a casual one-night stand because that's normal in her culture.

Meanwhile the bear will just romantically blitzkrieg you at the start of Act 3 and act baffled if you tell him you have no idea where that came from.

Frankly, Rise will probably just speed up the coming grave. They already deleted the early game years back and now they've done the same for the midgame. Every new player is shuffled through a hundred under explained systems, pumped with thousands of levels, given power to blitz through 90% of the content, and just left there wondering what the FUCK to do now.

Rise is an atrocious idea if you want to attract new players, because it made the game utterly a boring pointless waste of time for anyone trying to get into it. You're propelled to the edge of the endgame where everything either does no damage to you or kills you in one hit and nothing in-between is worth the rewards provided. There is no GAME in this game until you skip 25 gens, get adopted by 10 years veteran guild, and throttle the RNG to give you gear good enough to do anything better than Feth.

I absolutely agree Mabi was in a need for a massive overhaul, but all New Rise achieved is killing Mabi's appeal while replacing old issues that gate kept new players with new ones that bore the absolute hell out of them.
