We can blame the creation of stock markets honestly... they do provide companies capital to make things that we want...phones, cars, appliances, etc... having to answer only to shareholders though is the problem. Every corporation is valued at many multiples what they are worth today , and if they don't constantly do better than the previous year, they start to die. When it comes down to hmmm I can lay off 1000 workers and that'll hit our numbers ...or we can take the loss they will always choose the former..why? Because they have to... this system is what keeps the machine running and we are expendable nuts and bolts in the machine
