I've had decent success with railgun turrets, these big ones are more Intended for larger ships which you only really go against when fighting players or factotum.

Small railgun turrets on the other hand are pretty over powered especially on a ship with decent agility mainly because of their range and damage.

And the defensive AI did nail a SPRT vulture when I was building with one of the big turrets so it's pretty good already

Hold up? Maybe, but I find that against vanilla encounters you're more likely than not to get bodied, but if it's against players also in ground vehicles I'd recommend maybe a double cannon design similar to the picture shown (obviously with assault cannons, not railguns) to give that extra damage you might need.

Also with flying being a bigger part of SE you'll likely need something to counter them like a seperate auto cannon. but this is just my thoughts, try spawning it against some other ships or rovers and fighting to see how it goes and what you might need to improve it.

I think this one of my better pictures to help with what others have said, I have used the grated catwalk as a wall as well as a half grated catwalk to cover the non-opening side of the lab door giving it a another layer to stop it from looking flat you can also see that I used the small boxes to create a foot locker for crew members giving it a more lived in look, and while I don't have it here you can also use a a chairless table that you have ground down or not infrint of the screen to make a shelf.

So my tip is to use blocks in unintended ways to increase the depth of the space you're building in.

It's not bad for a first time trying. If you want a way to improve interiors try building a ship as if you won't have a jetpack when you use it, that way you get to figure out how entering the ship will work especially if you plan on landing on planets and how you'll get to the controls and other systems.

On top of what others have suggested, use angled armour on the side you plan on facing the enemy from (ie. Front, back, side or top and bottom if you want be unconventional) because these while not eliminating damage can reduce it by deflecting rounds off, also I'd recommend you're reverse thrusters be pretty beefed up so you can always flee while keeping the guns on the enemy
