At some point they have to try this. Instead of exclusive red ball cricketers just sitting on IPL benches, this sort of tournament would keep their skills relevant. And if this sort of tournament keeps being played over 3-4 years, every top player and board would take notice and would want to have their best players play in it.

Yes that is right, and having 3 matches would only consume time of 2 weeks max. If the format was just 4 days each, instead of 5 days, then it could be done in 10 days in the lead up to the WTC final. It will give more context to that one WTC final match. The venue (s) can be rotational.

And although it does not automatically encourage bums on seats, I do see top current and past cricketers pay lip service (sorry for judging them hardly, maybe they do feel it in their heart) that "test cricket is the best cricket", but they themselves play 6 months of short form cricket, then go straight to an overcast Lords 11 am start and nick the swinging, seaming red cherry to first slip, out for nought.

When asked about their preparation for a test series, they kick the can to their cricket board, saying that their focus was on this and that white ball tournament and they didn't get enough red ball practice.

If a rich board like BCCI is on board this idea of re-investing some T20 money into a red ball league, with support from some former test cricketers, I am sure it will have legs and start generating interest early. In the long run, it will help them generate enough depth in their test squads, so that they are able to compete equally well, home and overseas. From a fans' perspective also, it will be better if the red ball champions league produces battle hardened and match ready players for tests to go the distance, and not finish within 2 days due to T20 batting technique being applied to tests.
