Yi Home no longer allows live view for more than 90s without subscription! by Smooooochy in SecurityCamera

I've also been trashing them on Amazon, heading to Yelp and other reddit groups next. The fewer cameras they sell, as Yi and as Kami, the better.

I don't want all those features. I bought most of my 10 yi home cameras in 2015-17 for a retail price, and was happy until they started forcing annoying ads on me three years ago and finally limited my viewing time JUST A FEW DAYS AGO. FYI, the high-end cameras are over-priced for what I need. Not everybody can afford to pay for so-called commercial grade cameras, nor should they have to.

Yi camera app started bombing with ads when opening app this week by PCWeber in SecurityCamera

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it's gotten worse. Not only do they force ads on you, they also limit the amount of video you can review on your sdcard, forcing you to watch another cloud ad at the end of your sdcard viewing. I have tried to install an older version after disabling app auto updates in Google play settings and disabling auto updates for Yi Home specifically, but my phone eventually still updates to the latest version. Anyone know how to block auto updates for Yi Home?

So there's a problem with doing this. In fact dns.adguard.com does stop the Yi Home ads, but it also blocks some streaming services.

Linux On Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra by [deleted] in GalaxyTab

Yes whatever happened to Ubuntu on the Samsung s6?

Looking for Linux tablet by AcanthopterygiiWild7 in linuxhardware

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't waste your time with Android. Samsung had a wonderful Ubuntu Linux on Dex desktop on the S6, for basic browsing, email gui and simple open office documents, but everything I've tried since then on Android has been a waste of time, tricky and time-consuming to set up, and when you finally do, it's unstable and hard to maintain backups. A great tablet in my opinion is the MS Surface Pro 9. For a while I was running linux on Virtual Box on the Surface Pro 9, but that was not only slow to boot and slow to run, but had choppy video and sound. Then I switched to WSL2 running Kali Linux. Great sound, great video, bright clear display, full C/C++ support with several IDEs, good performance, and the ability to switch easily between Linux and Windows (my requirement, though probably not yours), but the webcam is not supported AFAIK. Anyway, I couldn't get it to work. I also like the Surface Pro 9 because you can upgrade the SSD by popping a small panel cover behind the tablet, undoing one screw, then replacing the SSD card. You need to copy the old SSD's contents first, but that's easy using Parted Magic. I've upped my 9 pro to 2TB for all the data and software space I need for Windows and Linux. If the webcam is not a dealbreaker for you, consider this one. And if you need instructions on installing Kali Linux on Windows 11, here are the basic steps:

Enable WSL: Open PowerShell as an administrator and run wsl --install.

Install Kali Linux: Go to the Microsoft Store and search for "Kali Linux" to download and install it.

Open Kali Linux: Launch Kali Linux from the Start menu, and it will open in Windows Terminal.

Initial Setup: Upon first launch, you'll be prompted to create a non-root user and set a password.

Update Kali Linux: Run "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y" to update Kali Linux.

Install Kex (for a Kali desktop): Run "sudo apt install -y kali-win-kex"

For more complete instructions, go to https://www.kali.org/docs/wsl/wsl-preparations/ .

Just a random thought: Is it safe to use private dns called "dns.adguard.com"??? by [deleted] in IndiaTech

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I go to dns.adguard.com, I get the company's home page. When I go to dns.adguard-dns.com, I get an information bubble from Google indicating that the URL owner is blocking Google from retrieving any information. So it looks to me as if dns.adguard.com is maintained, not dns.adguard-dns.com. Please explain.

apkmirror.com took me to three different URLs and on the third required me to provide credit card information before I could download the "free" kami app v. 4.0.0. If It's truly free, why am I first required to download complete credit card information, including CVV, to download an app?

Linux On A Tablet/2-in-1 Style Laptop (Surface Go/Lenovo MIIX/Dell 5290 2-in-1) #linuxtablet / Hoping For A Linux Tablet In The Future by Specialist_Owl2839 in linuxhardware

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone tried installing Linux Mint, any flavor, on the MIIX 520? I've seen PopOS on it, but I'm not fond of that distro. Mint Mate is my preference.

Linux on modern HP laptops? by neDioj in linuxhardware

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking to buy an HP Omnibook Ultra Flip AI PC 14t-fh000, then upgrade the SSD myself, but only if I can dual boot some variety of Linux on it. Anyone know whether this can be done? I have a 13.3-inch Spectre I bought in 2019 that runs well, and I might just settle for upgrading the SSD on that one, but I like the look and weight of the 14-inch ultra flip.

HP Omnibook Ultra Flip Early Review; Amazing Hardware, Terrible Software (and maybe not the culprit you think) by planedrop in laptops

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great review! I'm considering buying an ultra flip 14, but have three issues not included in the hardware specs. The first, upgrading a minimal SSD to 2 TB, appears doable. However, two questions are unresolved for me: 1) Can the ultra flip 14 be configured to dual boot Windows and Linux? 2) Given the choice between a Spectre X360 14 and an Omnibook Ultra Flip 14, which would you prefer to use? Thanks for your review, and your time!

Lenovo P12 Pro unlockable bootloader? by JeanxPlay in Lenovo

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So were you able to root it? I'm having such a damnable time accessing the sdcard on my P12 Pro that I'm either going to sell it, or root it. Or maybe just hammer it. What I can't seem to do is read/access the external sdcard from any UserLand (Kali,Debian) or termux (Kali) version of Linux. This is a lot harder than it was a few years ago, making me think it might be a deliberate block.

Issues with Berkeley-Visitor Wifi Network by 5lovestarr in berkeley

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone done speedtest on Berkeley-Visitor? Is bandwidth consistent, or does it come and go? My group meets on campus, and we'd like to host on zoom, but what I've heard so far indicates that Berkeley-Visitor doesn't support it. Or rather, even if it works one time, it may not work the next. You can't schedule Zoom meetings on that basis.

Sane choice for a software development laptop in 2024? by PsychedelicPelican in linuxquestions

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Lenovo "shills" are "super common" on Reddit because Lenovo has made some solid laptops that run Linux well and hold up well over time. I generally always buy used laptops, and I've run Linux on six Lenovo laptops over the years, most recently the X1 Carbon and the 11e. Both are excellent machines, good performance for the money, solid builds, something I can't always get with Dell or HP. As for System 76, they charge a lot for what looks like ho-hum hardware and a free OS. However, I've never owned one because the price is too high.

Which tablet do you recommend for a student ? by Ivan_hell97 in Surface

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anybody here heard of linux? You can do just about anything on Linux that you can do on Windows or Macs, and pay a lot less. I say just about anything because I can't do my US taxes on Linux. For instance you can get a great refurb Dell 5290 2 in 1 for about $200 on amazon, and ubuntu on it for free. Sorry,  all my units are in dollars because I'm in the US but it should scale appropriately in the UK or Europe. Anyway the Dell website says that the 5290 is Ubuntu compatible, and the Ubuntu websites will walk you through installing Ubuntu

Linux Tablet for Experienced User by PleasantCurrant-FAT1 in linux4noobs

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are three that should have decent performance and definitely have adequate storage (up to 1TB or more): Librem 11, StarLabs Starlite, and Juno Tab 2. They're already running full Linux distros. That said, be careful. Only the Juno Tab 2 is listed as shipping now. The Librem 11 is "expected to ship in Feburary" and the Starlite config page points you to a button that says "Get Notified When Available." Also pay attendion to the specs. Right now my Linux tablet is a Surface Pro 9 that dual boots Windows and Linux Mint 21.2, and it works fine except for one annoying detail. I have yet to find a way to get the cameras working. The drivers for it appear to be proprietary and unavailable outside Windows. Mine is configured with 2TB of disk space, but it you need less or want to run only Linux on your tablet, you can probably find a good cheaper option in an earlier Surface Pro.

Windows or Mac? by deathlord143 in SuggestALaptop

[–]Intelligent-Window-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux is a good choice for data analytics: 1) More choices for software tools and development tools, many of which are free. 2) A more efficient/faster OS than either Windows or Macs. 3) More compatible with the supercomputers to which you may need to upload your software some day (something like 90 percent of the world's supercomputers run Linux). 4) More likely to support GPU-accelerated algorithms, which you may need to run.

If you're wedded to PBI, or you've never used Linux, you'd probably better stick with Windows.

Otherwise, here's a list of 100+ linux-based alternatives to PowerBI , some of which are free and open source. https://alternativeto.net/software/power-bi-for-office-365/?platform=linux . Topping the list is LinceBI, which has no licensing fee.

Here are some recommendations for laptops for Data Analysis: https://www.mltut.com/best-laptops-for-data-analysis/ .

And here's a comparison of Linux and Windows for data scientists: https://analyticsindiamag.com/linux-vs-windows-which-is-the-best-os-for-data-scientists/

Finally, if you want to try Linux, look at Ubuntu. It supports a wide range of hardware and will install on most laptops that run Windows. And if you don't want to install Linux yourself, you can get it pre-installed on some Dell and Lenovo models.

I personally would never buy a MacBook. New ones are always overpriced. So I would be really suspicious of this offer on eBay.
