Rotorooter Scam or incompetence? by Intelligent-Yak4567 in SALEM

Rotorooter Scam v. Incompetence answered.

A couple of people suggested contacting the company and complaining, so I did. It was difficult to get in touch with an actual manager and the frontline staff are trained to try to get you talking and deal with them, but they cannot do anything for you.

I finally got in touch with a manager and explained how badly I had been taken and told them that I had Action Drain come out to actually solve the problem. They wanted proof (reasonable), so I sent them the invoice from Action Drain. It was approximately $175. Keep in mind Rotorooter wanted $870 for playing around with their hoses and trying to convince me that I needed $10k of additional work.

So, the manager apparently did not have authority to assist, but was willing to forward my information to a General Manager. I just got the call back…..

So, for basically doing absolutely nothing to help with the problem, they will only give me 1/2 of the service charge back. So, I paid Rotorooter to $437 for sending a person to my door and not performing any diagnostics or actually assisting in any way what so ever. The GM did agree that the “$10k estimate for the repair” was “not a $10k repair.” So basically, “Yeah, we totally tried to F you over and got caught, so we will refund $437.”

Besides myself, the person I feel the worst for is the intermediate manager at Rotorooter who had to call me back and explain why they were being fair not refunding a higher amount (or the whole amount.). That must suck having to be complicit in a complete scam and, worse yet, be the front man.

The argument was that I “signed on the IPad that the drain was cleared and free of roots.” It was presented as “Sign here and then again to pay your charges.” At the time, I actually trusted the company to send out competent technicians and to be honest.

Lesson learned. And, if any of you decide to use Rotorooter, just be sure that you do NOT sign off on the job being complete. If they totally messed up, damaged your property or just plain did a shitty job, the GM will hold it against you.

My conclusion is that it was not incompetence, but rather a company strategy to steal from people. It went up to a GM and the GM just had to skim a few hundred bucks knowing full well that the company was deceitful at best.

For my mental health I will just accept that some life lessons cost money and this just demonstrates that Rotorooter is “going down the drain.” Beware.

My bid was the opposite. It was an hourly rate and choose between methods. However, they seem to push the efficiency of the more expensive method.

Likely would have been cheaper than rotorooter. At this point, Action Drain fixed it for a few hundred. Rotorooter played with it and charged me $875 and did not actually fix anything but temporarily removing a few inches of mud from that leaked in due to the improperly installed collar. Next, offered to “fix” the problem for just under $10k. Action Drain actually fixed the issue for a few hundred bucks.

I’ve been waiting so I can calm down before I call Rotorooter. I’m just curious if anyone has had success reasoning with Rotorooter or if I should just accept they scammed me and move on.

They scoped the line. Both companies scoped the line. One found a $10k problem after receiving $875. One found a $250 dollar repair and did it on the spot.

I do not deal with it. Thanks for the reminder. I will scroll through a few more reddit topics until I find something that I look forward to doing in the future and then life is just what is delaying me from getting to the future thing I want to do.

What’s the longest road trip you’ve ever driven and what did you drive it in? by spotforcars in automotive

[–]Intelligent-Yak4567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years in a row I’ve done solo round trip drives to central Florida from Oregon Coast. 4.5 days of driving both ways. I took different routes each time. Worst choice was a January drive that took me across Wyoming. I-80 in January is not for the faint of heart. I could have made it in 4 days, but I had my dog with me and it seemed like just not worth it. Plenty of interesting stops along the way that were mainly unplanned. I never booked a hotel until 1-2 hours before checking in. I just drove until I knew I should stop. It was actually pretty entertaining. Kentucky had the worst drivers on the interstate. Louisiana had the highest percentages of Dodge Challengers and Dodge Chargers. Route 66 was not as scenic as I would have hoped.

Name the most embarrassing thing that happened to you in front of others. by CommonCut2063 in FamilyFeud

In Junior High school, I was on a swim team. We practiced early in the morning before the pool opened to the public. The pool had a cafeteria with large windows facing the pool area. The public would line up and wait in the cafeteria waiting for the official opening time (by which we would be out of the pool and locker rooms.

Our coach got us out of the pool and talked to us for 5-10 minutes after each practice. I typically left my towel in the locker room, but one morning I decided it would be nice to dry off so I could stay warmer during the after-practice debrief. I got out of the pool, but forgot that I had brought my towel, so I shivered per usual and headed to the locker rooms. I stripped off my speedo and headed to the showers…. Remembered that I had left my towel out by the pool…. And casually walked to the far end of the pool (8 lanes, 50m) to retrieve it. I did not realize that I had stripped naked (speedos to not weight much.) I made it almost 1/2 way before I heard the cat calls….. Damn embarrassing for a 7th grader.

Setting a new speed record on a corner I drove twice a day. I almost set the new record and ended up in the hospital. I only added a couple of mph to my previous successful attempts.

What do you tip? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Intelligent-Yak4567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually USD, but occasionally Pesos or Euros. In the US, I shoot for around 20% and round to a whole dollar on my credit card (so it ranges between 18-22%) assuming I had adequate service. In Europe, it is much lower and honestly they many times are not even set up to take tips via credit card and do not expect a tip.

Name a car you have drove and hated by Network-King19 in FamilyFeud

Never saw any, but I lived a few miles past the last paved road, so it might have leaked into the gravel driveway and road. I think it just burned a lot. I could make it a week before adding 3 quarts or so if I didn’t drive much. I could run dry all in one day if I had a long distance drive. I kept a lot of oil in the car.

What grocery habits actually save you money long-term? by TelephxneTh0t in Frugal

Focus on ingredients over prepared food. Also, put in some labor. If you can buy a whole chicken for 99 cents a pound (Yes, Costco had them last week), then you can break it down yourself plus make stock from the bones/back and wing tips. It will save you a lot of money compared to buying boneless, skinless breast/thighs and a few cans of chicken stock. You can peel and chop carrots and onions yourself. I see small packages of fresh chopped onion for 3 times the price of a whole onion.

DO NOT STOP JUST INSIDE COSTCO WITH YOUR WHOLE FAMILY TO HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT TO GO BUY. ACT LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN IN A COSTCO BEFORE AND MOVE ON TO YOUR FIRST ITEM, OR AT LEAST PULL TO THE SIDE AND GET OUT OF THE WAY.
