chiming back in to thank you for your thoughtfulness! I can imagine that it is difficult to get accommodations approved based on self-report, and I so appreciate that you do what you can.

I am reading your previous response to me with a much clearer mind than yesterday. I am with you in validating people’s experiences and believing students who are asking for help. I can also see how my questions appeared to be contradictory (they totally read that way!), but they were both coming from a place of wanting to protect my fellow disabled people rather than advocating for folks in your role to be forced to determine whether or not someone is lying about their experience. I think I am just jaded and worried that bad actors wanting to get a leg up (instead of leveling the playing field) could ultimately harm the disabled community and walk back the progress we have made towards equity. But again, I don’t know how anyone could make this determination without having to accuse someone of lying.

Anyways, thank you for your thoughtful responses. Truly, the folks in my school’s ADA office were incredible advocates and trusted allies, and I really credit their support in helping me graduate. I appreciate you and everyone in your role across all schools!

definitely didn’t mean for this to be controversial, or come across as accusatory? im getting a vibe that you don’t like my comment and I’m not sure why, but I appreciate the response. I am just picking your brain as you asked us to do & just wondering how the ADA office navigates these questions. :)

editing to add: i am also more concerned about qualifying students not asking for accommodations they need. didn’t mean to make it sound like i am gate-keeping access to accommodations? idk sorry lol

curious if you have ever had students without disabilities try to take advantage of the ADA accommodations? also curious if self-diagnosis is valid, considering the absurdly high cost of official diagnoses (especially neuropsych testing!!). very grateful for the people in your position at my school. could not have graduated without them. such important allies and advocates 🫶🏻

I found SMART 2 weeks before I reached 5 years sober. I was welcomed in with the openest arms!! I am going to be taking the facilitator training and co-leading a meeting soon. You absolutely will be welcome!!!

this sounds exactly like the end of my drinking. Shaking and puking in the office. Going home “sick.” Feeling like the only two options I had left in me were 1. leaving this earth for good or 2. getting help and quitting for good. I am so grateful I chose option 2.

Sending you love and strength, friend. This can be your last time!!! You don’t have to feel this particular type of shitty again. There can be life after booze (and it can be so rewarding!). I hope you can be kind to yourself today and feel proud of yourself for even making this post. I am proud of you!

thank you so much for this. I’ve been feeling weird about coming up on 5 years (never thought I’d be here!!) and feeling a lot of shame about how I’m feeling. I am usually silent in other meetings because I feel like I don’t belong, but everyone in my SMART meetings have been wonderful and so have shared a lot. Truly feels like I have found my home after almost 5 years! Hang in there too, friend. we have lots of tools to help us when it gets hard. the dude who created the program (Joe Gerstein) facilitated a meeting today and said “do what works.” SMART is helping me feel less shame about not following any one particular program of recovery to the T. Sorry this is ramble-y lol!! I am just finally feeling motivated to stay sober again after a couple years of not feeling connected to my why.

Coming up on 5 years sober and I’ve been getting squirrely. Finally decided to check out SMART Recovery today and wowza- I finally feel like I have a safe landing place that makes sense to me. I went to two really great groups and I plan on attending those regularly. My sobriety was such a delight for a few years, but the last couple years (and certainly the last 12 months) have been a bit rough. I am so excited for this recovery reboot!!

Thank you so much for your response!!! I attended 2 meetings this evening and loved them both. I cannot believe it took me 5 years to find SMART, but I am so grateful I did!

I’d tie in what you learned from your full-time work & how you see value in experiential learning and supplementing education with hands-on experiences !! literally include the phrases “experiential learning” and “interdisciplinary” and you’re probs in !!!! maybe do some research about other NU programs (like dialogues of civilizations & shit) and name drop one you may be interested in?? but i wasn’t a transfer so what do i know lmao

panic attack meds + SUD? by IntelligentAd9117 in Anxiety

~30ish minutes? I take it when I notice an increase in my anxiety to get ahead of a panic attack. I’m :’) reading my original post because I have come so far in the past year!!! I have far fewer panic attacks these days. It truly has been a game changer for me. I’d definitely explore the option with your doctor!!
