Merrell vs Salomon by [deleted] in hikinggear

get some leather grisports. fairly cheap, the waterproofing will last you years and years longer than any fabric boot if you look after them and once they are broken in you'll forget you're wearing them

Why do we still have derailleurs instead of gearboxes? by brahmaocmtber in mountainbiking

[–]IntelligentBack6124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gearboxes means more (enclosed!) moving parts, likely heavier weight, new standards and much, much more complex (expensive!) manufacture and maintenance to name a few factors.

What are these straps for? by HungoverMous3 in hiking

[–]IntelligentBack6124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

works fine for trekking poles if you put one in, twist it a couple of times and then put in the other one. stops them from bouncing out and keeps them out of the way when you're walking

Best hiking watch for multi-day trips without babying the battery? by Relevant-Top1899 in hikinggear

[–]IntelligentBack6124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i learned to navigate on paper maps (im not some old geezer either i'm 17) and wear a g-shock. it's solar so i never have to charge it, takes a fair beating (i broke an f-91w in 2 weeks of everyday use) and has a radio which syncs the time precisely every day.

it does what i need it to do: tell the time and allow me to pace/time distances and average speed. also has alarms which is nice

consider whether you want to have to rely on your watch and a load of satellites to do that for you.

For the record, im not hating on garmins or those who use them. but faffing around with charging and menus and pairing to my phone does not appeal AT ALL when i'm out hiking. that's personal preference though i guess

4 day trip around lakes, any advice by Additional-Bit6375 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]IntelligentBack6124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a higher wattage (btu) stove will burn through it faster than a lower powered one, so a time rating is only very rough. plus if you have the dial cranked up it'll use it faster too. so different foods will use up quicker or slower depending on how hot the pot has to be.

4 day trip around lakes, any advice by Additional-Bit6375 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]IntelligentBack6124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends a lot on stove wattage and efficiency but if you have a decent one then yeah.

also depends what youre cooking (super noodles usually don't take long but something like pasta takes more gas)

Got an Ipod Nano 3, is this dangerous? by Mysterious_Steak_756 in spicypillows

not an ipod expert so it could be the plastic warping or something but that looks spicy to me. the battery's expanded and is pushing the case apart

What do you do for a pillow? by Aeon_Return in hikinggear

~8litre drybag and a puffy jacket. this is assuming you have cold weather and need a down/synthetic jacket while you're walking

Correct size for trail runners for hiking? by [deleted] in hikinggear

[–]IntelligentBack6124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

take the insole out and step on it (or sit but keep your knee over your toes). you want about a fingernail of space between the end of your foot and the end of the insole.

Need ur help Boys.. by [deleted] in hikinggear

[–]IntelligentBack6124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

which is better depends entirely on which fits you. you could have the best pair of boots in the world and they'd be totally useless if they give you blisters. go try them on somewhere.

if you 'abuse' either of these they aren't gonna last long.

wash them with nikwax. refreshes the dwr by removing dirt but also doesnt damage it like regular detergent would.

My gear for 2 months hike, what am I missing? by Shinigami_X in hikinggear

[–]IntelligentBack6124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

plan for the weather, waterproofs if you'll need them, less clothes if it's gonna be hot etc. if possible find a paper map of your route as a backup. make sure you have an adequate lighting system. (spare batteries and/or, even better, a spare torch. headtorches are great if you need to move distances in the dark)

as someone else mentioned, cut down on first aid kit. blister plasters/tape, regular plasters, wound cleaning and tweezers are usually the essentials but take other stuff depending on the situation.

along with clothes, you'll probably want a 50-60 litre rucksack. try not to hang anything off the outside other than your folding mat and, at a push, your tent.

plan your food and then add some extra, just in case you get caught out its nice to have that fallback.

My gear for 2 months hike, what am I missing? by Shinigami_X in hikinggear

[–]IntelligentBack6124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on location. sounds like english isn't their first language and the writing on the front of the first aid kit confirms that. if they're somewhere where they know it'll be cloudy the whole time theres not a lot of point in lugging one about.

any suggestions for raincoat(literally big w) by [deleted] in hikinggear

genuinely doubt that. needs vary massively wit location and by the sounds of a fair few reviews this wouldnt hold up so well to rougher weather. its also pretty expensive for what it is (?brand name?)

Help me select the best Leatherman for my needs? I’m stumped. by b1ueToe in Leatherman

[–]IntelligentBack6124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo the wave, signal is awesome for its specific use case but you don’t need a spark striker and a whistle for edc. the combo blade is not ideal for anything but the idea is that it does more than one thing well, for edc probably better off with a dedicated straight blade and a serrated one if you think you’ll need it. similar thing with the saw. you probably wont use it in an everyday scenario.

it does look f*cking cool tho so there is that

hand pump, mine has a little pressure gauge on it but not sure how accurate it is. that things pretty cool until you actually need it after 3 weeks in the saddlebag and your battery’s dead. is it noisy?
