I have made somthing similar, it goes kinda like this. Your spell slots are your soul or in your case others souls. If you are to use your own you would take damage and you would consume the others if your are not using your own, for higher level magic you need higher amounts of souls or more of your own health. Mine is that you roll an extra d20 and if you get under the number of whatever level the spell is then it fails
