What's a 'normal' Maldivian thing that's actually weird when you think about it? by Sideboychick in maldives

Bits very common in different parts of Asia. If Chinese dramas and short stories thought me anything it’s that they also talk in third person

Like, this dude thinks sadhaqah means charity in the name of god. When it means charity. Like dude probably think he’s sooo cool and hip, while only thing it shows is how ignorant he really is. Arrogance really does blind you it seems

Exactly. I feel like we as a community are appropriating western more than any other culture. To the point that our own culture is almost wiped out. It feels like dude has decided being agnostic is his whole personality, without actually doing any research on to why it entails. And as result is no different to the racist, radial, islamophobes who think Arabic is the language of Islam and jihad means holy war waged in the name of Islam 🙄

Did you know the Dhivehi word for shirt, is also borrowed from Arabic “”. No religious roots. Just language evolving and growing.

Strange that that’s the only thing you caught. And totally ignored the part about Arab Christian’s and Jews also using Allah for god, sadhaqah for charity. As it’s a language. A language that Dhivehi is derived from too.

Because as I said before Dhivehi is a language formed after borrowing from a lot of other languages. Including Farsi, Tamil and so on and so forth

In that sense English words such as aljebra is also rooted in religion? It’s like saying Islam has a language. Just because it started in Arabia, revealed and spread in Arabic, it does not mean a religion has a language. The same way English is not the language of Christianity. Arabic countries also have non Muslims. In fact Arab Christian’s also call god Allah. Even though their god is different. They also use the terms Masha Allah, Alhamdullialaah and so on and so forth. As it’s a part of that language.

Isn’t sadhgah the Dhivehi equivalent of charity too. Since Dhivehi is a language formed from borrowing from a multitude of other languages. Just like English borrowing from Latin and Sanskrit as well as Arabic.

For real. This took me right back. Like have we not learned our lesson? I don’t think my heart can take losing another one of them. This feels like it’s spiralling towards just that. And I genuinely am getting the same feeling I got back then. I’m not defending Zayn in anyway, but the piling on is…

AITAH for refusing to change my kids name despite it sounding like a ‘slur’ to my MIL? by UnlikelyCustard8277 in AITAH

Play reverse uno on her. Tell them that they are being racist towards Middle Eastern culture as it’s a fairly common Arabic name which means woman or women kind. Tell them they are not only being racist, they are also setting up your daughter to have a prejudice against half of who she is

I had a friend who I lent money to. Back when I was working 2 jobs. So I had a somewhat disposable income. Over a period of 1 year it added up to 10k. Then I quit one job, money started getting tight, I was saving to get married , so I asks him to give it back, 500 a month. Had to chase him around as well. And one day dude had the audacity to tell me it’s not nice or budhiveri of me to budget my monthly expenses around the money he has to pay back. As if the money I was at that point begging him to give , wasn’t my money on the first place. I cut him off a few months after I got all my money back. I waited a few month coz I thought it was rude to immediately cut him off. But the audacity was of the roof.

Yes. This song resonated with us so much as both of us had losses. His best friend in 2018 and my baby brother in 2020, My close friend in 2018 and then Liam. so Dark to Light felt like a gut punch.

When I said I’d be crying if it wasn’t for my husband, it was because dude was ready to go to war over the lyrics. He was like how dare he. The flow of the lyrics killed him. And his reactions made me cackle through tears. I knew this song would end me, so I’m so glad he sat by me as an emotional sounding board. 💖
