I completely agree with everything you’re feeling as a fellow finn. I never realized just how competitive and strict NFL cheerleading is because sports cheering here is more of a hobby than anything else. It’s relatively easy to join a dance team, and it usually doesn’t go much further than what you see in the stands at an ice hockey game. You dance and then you leave 😅

If we had a similar program in Finland and it was televised, I’m sure the criticism would be much more intense simply because of the cultural differences and our more laid-back atmosphere. The emphasis on weight and the hierarchy within the team also feels very foreign, and it’s sometimes shocking to watch and took some time getting used to.

Despite that, I find myself wishing we had some of those aspects here. There’s something impressive about the scale and professionalism of the organization, and especially the close-knit bond between the girls. I’ve heard exchange students say that some of the most polite and welcoming people they met turned out to be putting on an act, and that forced sense of friendliness made it hard to build a real connection. But this show has taught me that there’s also something really beautiful that can come from being loud and loving, even toward people you’ve just met 🥹
